The Republicans may just have to agree to disagree.

House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) are against a new gun-control proposal put forth by a fellow GOPer in response to the Tucson shootings.

Rep. Peter King (R-L.I.), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said Tuesday that he'd introduce a new bill that bars anyone from carrying a gun within 1,000 feet of a federal official.

He believes the legislation could have prevented the Jan. 8 Arizona shootings that killed six and injured more than a dozen people, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for Rep. Cantor told the Daily News majority leader is against the proposed legislation.

"The proposal wouldn't have prevented this tragedy, or other mentally unstable individuals or criminals from committing horrific acts," said Dayspring.

Boehner's spokesman, Michael Steel, told The Hill that the speaker, too, was against the measure.

On Wednesday, a teary-eyed Boehner opened a session of the House by honoring victims of the Arizona shooting and introducing a resolution to recognize and condemn the tragedy.

"Our hearts are broken, but our spirit is not," he said.

    • OK, here is the problem with Congressmen King's proposal. How are you going to police 535 floating 1000 foot perimeters all across the USA? If a congressman's limo drives within 1000 feet of my house, am I a criminal? It is impossible to enforce, and stupid to try to.
