After it was found Labour MP Phil Woolas made false claims in election pamphlets, a by-election was set for Oldham East. In reports it was stated as a place to test the coalition since both parties were standing, while for Labour it was a fight to keep the seat.

Last night the votes went for Labour's Debbie Abrahams with a majority around 3,5000.

"Although the Lib Dems failed to snatch the seat, their share of the vote actually increased slightly, from 31.6% at the general election to 31.9%.
However, the Tories' share of the vote fell from 26.4% in May."-BBC
