African-American GOP Official Resigns, Citing Arizona Tea Party Threats

Republican District 20 Chairman Anthony Miller was not the only party official to resign following the shooting that killed six and wounded 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and a federal judge. But Miller had been an especially dedicated campaigner for the GOP, and said he only stepped down in the face of “constant verbal attacks” and other forms of intimidation.
“I wasn’t going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday,” he said. “I love the Republican Party but I don’t want to take a bullet for anyone.”
Miller, 43, told HuffPost he decided to resign after his wife expressed concern for their safety. Miller had been the target of heavy criticism from Arizona Tea Partyers, in part because he worked on Sen. John McCain’s campaign last fall. (The Tea Partyers favored McCain’s opponent, J.D. Hayworth.)
But the attacks also took on a racial hue. One critic referred to him derogatorily as “McCain’s boy,” Miller said. Other language was even less ambiguous. At an event in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Miller said someone called out, “There’s Anthony, get a rope.”
Yet Miller balks at crying racism.
“To say that anyone has been racially motivated, I can’t really draw a conclusion,” he said. “But a lot of people told me ‘You’re not a conservative, you’re a RINO.’ In my mind, that’s just as bad as being called a n——-, honestly. When you call someone a n——-, it’s saying they’re less than, and RINO is the same thing.”
Newly-elected district Secretary Sophia Johnson, First Vice Chairman Roger Dickinson, and former district spokesman Jeff Kolb are also stepping down, according to the Republic, although Dickinson contested the claim that they are all going willingly.

Easy to make threats via internet or letter and say you are a member of the Tea Party. I think a lot of this is actually from the Tea Party opposites who which to make that group look bad.
Oh, all those morons who keep referring to them as Tea Baggers need to look in the mirror if they don't like the poisonious atmosphere of politics today. - 1 year ago

Aint nobody giving up a good government job during a recession to make a point. Im sure he got threats being a black govt official in a place with lots of hate groups its a given, it doesn't take any guts to send threats in this day and age a kid with 5 mins using some coffeeshop wifi , a throwaway cellphone can and a fake email account can email a threat and never get caught for it.
If i broke a bone for everytime ive been threatened on the internet , you might as well grab a mason jar because my body would be the consistency of crabapple jelly.
The issue becomes how seriously must you take the threats , well when a white female congresswoman gets shot in the head , you would be a fool not to at least consider the threat level to be much higher.
The man has kids and a wife , whatever you think of him you cant fault him for his decision.

there is a reason why we hail saints and heroes and martyrs , because they are few and a special crowd of humans , if one believes being there to put their kids through college , he may not be a national folk hero , but he is a hero to his family and i dont blame him for thinking that matters , too few of us in the world nowadays value being a hero in the eyes of our wives and children.

So everyone who is threatened should step away from whatever it is they support , because they are threatened? I didn't here anyone calling King to step down because of threats. I didn't hear anyone telling Lennon to quite down because of threats. That my friends is a cowardly thing to do.

thier certainly are things worth dying over, and for some people thier job meets that criteria.for others not so much.ya cant fault some one for preservation of life (thier own) trumping all else.it is a minor insanity actualy to function any other way.an insanity that we often comend, but an insanity none the less.
lennon and king didnt get a heads up, and had no choice.big difference.i bet giffords had she had the choice may have taken a different action, as to avoid the situation she is in now.would that be cowardly or smart?

cuz the threat of mortal demise is the trump card.not unreasonable to not want to die, especialy for a job that you arent invested fully in.i sure as shit wouldnt die for my shit job. - 1 year ago

um can ya cite where in anyplace, potential death as a result of being an elected official is understood?
it isnt like to be elected ya have to be of a certain age, and accept death as a consiqunce of the job.death as a consiquence of a job tends to have sane people not do those jobs.despite our history of assissination in our country, death doesnt come with the territory of being an elected official.it is the exception not the rule.to decide your life isnt worth public service isnt cowardly, its basic human nature.

It's easy for you to say that from a 1,000 miles away but I'm from Arizona. My family lives there still, and from what they're describing to me is a scene that really is as bad as Miller is concerned about. My older sister is a medical attorney that lives in Chandler, just outside of Phoenix. She's a conservative, but she also told me that she is always harassed by Whites on voters days. They always assume that she's a democrat and try to intimidate her by telling her that she's in the wrong precinct. Arizona, by all accounts from what my friends and family are telling, is a powder keg getting ready to blow.
I'm really surprised that you would make a comment like that Maas.

The interesting thing is that people are still trying their damnedest to make this shooting a political and/or a racial issue.
Guess what?
IT WASN'T!
It was just some whackjob who had an obsession with an attractive congresswoman and decided to try and kill her and a bunch of other people.
The media is out of control with all the hype on this, as usual.
I don't doubt that racial animosity is growing in many parts of the country, but if this republican party worker's wife thinks that her husband is in immediate danger because of the shooting then she is simply a sheep who is falling for media spin.
My patience with sheep is wearing thin, that's why I made this comment.
Like I said, good riddance but I wish him luck and I hope that he finds a nice safe career somewhere else.

Well we have to look at this as two seperate issues then because this article is mixing two seperate issues as if they are the same, and they are not!
1. The Chairman resigning from his position because his wife is worried for the safety of their family from threats from alleged Tea Party racists
OK fine, a man has to do what a man has to do, even if it means doing what his wife tells him to do.
2. The issue of the Chairman resigning because he/and or his wife thinks that the Tea Party had something to do with the Arizona shooting
This is complete nonsense. No one has shown me a shred of evidence that the Jared Lee Loughner was part of any Tea Party organization. The fact that he may have been vagely political (more left leaning than conservative TBH) at one point is simply not enough to tie him in with the left's political enemies.
I'm not doubting the racism in Arizona, I'm pointing out that the Chairman is wrong in blaming the fact that he is scared for the safety of his family on the shooting.
