Jon Stewart continued his coverage of the Arizona shooting aftermath Thursday night, this time going after Fox News for actually criticizing the memorial held this week. While pundits initially praised the memorial service for those who were killed in Tucson, Stewart showed how soon they turned to nitpicking it as if it were a televised form of entertainment.
President Obama delivered support, inspiration and comfort to the people affected by Sunday's tragic events, not receiving much criticism about the event. But later, perhaps in a fit of boredom, Fox News pundits began discussing how the seating arrangement could have been better.
"Yeah, that would have made it much better," Stewart said. "That would have made it a better show, but you know it's a memorial service -- not the Emmys."
What's worse, the Native American man who gave the blessing, AU professor Dr. Carlos Gonzales, was criticized for sounding "strange" and blessing one too many things. Even veteran journalist Brit Hume said "it was most peculiar" as if it was supposed to be entertaining. This sent Stewart over the edge:
"It's not a show! He didn't open up a show! It's 'mourning' with a 'u'! You're confusing a morning show, which you are on, with a show of mourning which this is."
And it didn't stop there. More Fox analysts complained that the service was too positive and even likened it to a "pep rally," saying you can't have a memorial and a pep rally together.
"Have you ever been to an Irish wake?" Stewart asked in response.
For more, Stewart turned to correspondents Samantha Bee and John Oliver to discuss exactly how one can be let down by a memorial service.

The world doesn't rest on the shoulders of Jon Stewart, but I agree and I think we can give him some credit for the 9/11 first responders' bill getting passed. Time and time again he demonstrates how insightful he is, and you can tell how much he cares while at the same time being tremendously funny.

of course the world doesnt rest on stewarts shoulders, but an element of our collective conscience does.an element that cannot be quantified as it exists strictly in an existential realm.to what degree he effects it will never be known for better or worse, but im damn glad he offers this.this element, that previous to him, had only existed sporaticaly through out history for short periods.he now gives it a regular home in our national debate.
the fact that he is funny is just icing on the cake.a needed tool to further his offerings proliferation, but still a wonderfull indulgence for us.

Obama can do nothing right by these people, that will never change.
When he does something like Healthcare and they oppose, it's hard to tell if the real objection is policy, because Obama could save a drowning child and these clowns would fill the echo-chamber with speculation about Obama having to register as a sex offender because he spent 50 seconds pressing his lips & hands on an unconscious child.

not to argue your point, wich i agree with completely, but how can you negotiate advocating for shutting down fox while still upholding a love for free speech?
just asking cuz i struggle with this myself.they should be shut down as a toxic criminal enterprise in regards to our social discourse, but how does this work in a way that doesnt ask us to give up civil liberties? - 1 year ago

Easy, somethings need to be cut off. Free speech should be given to anyone that understands what it is and how to use it... when it comes to corporations.
But if a corporation is going to abuse it, than it should be shut down. It's that simple.
Again, when it comes to people, free speech should be given to everyone but it only goes so far. This country allows free speech in certain areas and if you abuse it, you get arrested. That's the way it should be with corporations.
what do you think?

KSirys:
creating limitations on free speech is setting a precident.even if we say make it against the law to say "i want to shoot the president" doesnt that fit right into the path to hell is paved in good intentions.that law would be the first stepping stone on a road that could lead to it is against the law to say anything negative.granted that is a far extrapilation of the concept, but why even travel down such a path not knowing where to appropriately draw the line.
dont use the corperation angle, cuz apparently we have decided corperations are the same thing as an individual person.i will never understand how this works, but that is unfotunately the case.
the problem is that this is all subjective.one mans hate speech is anothers philosophical right.we see fox for what it is, and the trickery they are trying to employ.but at the same time just as many if not more amongst us (americans) like fox for what ever reason.just as they cant take away the daily show, or south park, we cant take away thier entertainment.
the closest thing that makes reasonable sense to me, is the republicans favorite dirty word, regulation.strict criteria by the fcc for what can legaly present itself as news, versus entertainment based comentary.even the fair and balanced thing wich is funny as shit it is so rediculous they do have every right to claim, as that is all a matter of judgement.i mean fox actualy is fair and balanced, if the spectrum they are viewed in a conservative one.they are right in the middle of the right.lol just the right amount of crazy lol.
i say take away thier ability to call themselves news, so journalism cant be confused for what they do.wich would work to get rid of entertainment news too, wich the e-network wouldnt like, but no one will really miss lol.
and of course just the basic fining of fox by the fcc should be happening as fox makes more libels on a daily basis that effect the common good more than any howard stern or bubbuh the love sponge ever could.
