China, Russia quit dollar

Chinese experts said the move reflected closer relations between Beijing and Moscow and is not aimed at challenging the dollar, but to protect their domestic economies.
"About trade settlement, we have decided to use our own currencies," Putin said at a joint news conference with Wen in St. Petersburg.
The two countries were accustomed to using other currencies, especially the dollar, for bilateral trade. Since the financial crisis, however, high-ranking officials on both sides began to explore other possibilities.
The yuan has now started trading against the Russian rouble in the Chinese interbank market, while the renminbi will soon be allowed to trade against the rouble in Russia, Putin said.
"That has forged an important step in bilateral trade and it is a result of the consolidated financial systems of world countries," he said.
Putin made his remarks after a meeting with Wen. They also officiated at a signing ceremony for 12 documents, including energy cooperation.
The documents covered cooperation on aviation, railroad construction, customs, protecting intellectual property, culture and a joint communiqu. Details of the documents have yet to be released.
Putin said one of the pacts between the two countries is about the purchase of two nuclear reactors from Russia by China's Tianwan nuclear power plant, the most advanced nuclear power complex in China.
Putin has called for boosting sales of natural resources - Russia's main export - to China, but price has proven to be a sticking point.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, who holds sway over Russia's energy sector, said following a meeting with Chinese representatives that Moscow and Beijing are unlikely to agree on the price of Russian gas supplies to China before the middle of next year.

The Fed's are printing money...
"The Fed's $600 billion plan to buy bonds, which some have equated with printing money, is likely to hurt the dollar. China continues to unofficially peg its currency to the dollar, which may lower the value of the renminbi as much as 20%" ....At a time when the global economy is struggling, policymakers are using exchange rates to produce growth. A weaker currency boosts exports."

the federal reserve didn't devalue the dollar on purpose and not anticipate this type of retaliation as part of China's currency manipulation scheme that's been going on for some time...
China committed to exchange rate reform -foreign ministry
2:14 am ET 01/18/2011 - Reuters
BEIJING, Jan 18 (Reuters) - China is committed to reforming its exchange rate policy, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, after senior U.S. senators pressed for Congress to get tough with China over "manipulating" its currency.A group of U.S. senators said on Monday it was vital for the United States to pass legislation to punish China if it fails to allow its currency to rise in value rather than manage its rate, giving it an unfair advantage in global trade.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular news briefing ahead of President Hu Jintao's visit to Washington that China hopes U.S. lawmakers avoid harming the overall interests of Sino-U.S. trade.
The Foreign Ministry has no say in decisions on China's currency policy. (Reporting by Sui-Lee Wee and Huang Yan; Writing by Ben Blanchard; Editing by Ken Wills)

actually that is a pretty naive view of the global situation, kind of like a tom clancy view of things..
"Pakistan doesnt like Russia because they are buddy-buddy with India and its nuclear program. India is considered our ally and if it came down to it Pakistan would side with us. WHY?? Because the enemy of my enemy is my friend. "wtf are you even on about there? pakistan doesnt like russia because they like india but its ok that india is our ally? we've moved from jack ryan to jack wagner and melrose place.. if in the unlikely event nukes started flying, israel would go for iran and saudi. pakistan and india would lob at each other, and north korea well they would spin everywhere.. the middle east would either be unusuable for a half-life, or under Israeli control, basically threatening to blow the whole region to the stone age should any of the big boys start to mobilize troops that way.jordan egypt would rage ineffectually and the soviets would take georgia and azerbaijan back home with them, after conveniently wiping out the muslims within. turkey is basically a us base in this scenario.

Does anyone look at the date of these things? You'd figure this would be a big deal if it was TODAY this was coming out.
This is 2 months old. Why are people shocked NOW? Because of the other front page article on china? All this is, is another step away from the dollar... Not much of a shocker, and they're not really dropping the dollar altogether, they're reducing the amount of trade done with the dollar between themselves.
Headline hype much?
