Ask Obama to legalize it

Image
juicie
In an ongoing effort by the White House to engage the public via the internet, President Obama will answer questions from YouTube users in a live-streaming event this Thursday, January 27, two days after his annual State of the Union address.

LEAP speaker MacKenzie Allen, a retired deputy sheriff, wrote in to ask:

“As a police officer, I saw how waging the war on drugs has cost a trillion dollars and thousands of lives but does nothing to reduce drug use. Should we discuss legalizing marijuana and other drugs, which would eliminate the violent criminal market?”

YouTube has stated that the president will answer the questions that receive the most votes. LEAP’s question is currently among the top-voted entries. Let’s keep it going! To vote, please visit http://www.youtube.com/askobama and use the search box on the right side to find the question above from LEAP speaker MacKenzie Allen, then cast your vote. The easiest way to find the correct entry is to paste a phrase from the question, like “as a police officer,” into the search box.

Or ask your own poignant question and let us know in the comments so we can vote it up.

    • Whether I’m high,
      or whether I’m low-
      I’ll light up another
      ‘Cause God only knows;
      Where I have been
      and where I will go
      Come follow me
      and the world we will show;
      The truth behind the lies,
      See the devil in disguise,
      Open your eyes-
      Inhale, hold,
      Exhale, blow…
      Don’t you feel better?
      See, I told you so.
      Let the weed be free,
      as it was put here to be;
      Let’s all do something
      Revolution-nary! :peace

    • What's realy going on
The world lead leading producer of hemp is China with smaller production in Europe, Chile the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Over 30 countries produce industrial hemp, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Great Britain, France, Russia and Spain.[70]

Uruguay has also approved a project of hemp production as of the second half of 2010.

France is Europe's biggest producer, with 8,000 hectares cultivated. 70-80 % of the hemp fibre produced in Europe in 2003 were used for specialty pulp for cigarette papers and technical applications, about 15% is used in the automotive sector, 5 to 6% were used for insulation mats. Approximately 95% of hurds were used as animal bedding, almost 5% were used in the building sector.[9]

Canada (9,725 ha in 2004),[71] the United Kingdom, and Germany all resumed commercial production in the 1990s. British production is mostly used as bedding for horses; other uses are under development. The largest outlet for German fibre is composite automotive panels. Companies in Canada, UK, United States, and Germany, among many others, process hemp seed into a growing range of food products and cosmetics; many traditional growing countries still continue to produce textile-grade fibre.

Hemp is not legal to grow in the U.S. under Federal law because of its relation to marijuana, and any imported hemp products must meet a zero tolerance level. It is considered a controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (P.L. 91-513; 21 U.S.C. 801 et seq.). Some states have defied Federal law and made the cultivation of industrial hemp legal. These states — North Dakota, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, West Virginia, and Vermont — have not yet begun to grow hemp because of resistance from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.[72]

Commercial production (including cultivation) of industrial hemp has been permitted in Canada since 1998, under licenses and authorization issued by Health Canada. In 2009, hemp was harvested on 5450 hectares of Canadian land.[73]

    • 3:01 p.m. -- At last: Questions about drug policy and legalizing marijuana -- the most frequent questioned posed by YouTube users. A former police officer tells Obama the "war on drugs" has failed. Obama says it's "a legitimate debate," but he opposes legalization. He does say the drug problem should be viewed more as a medical issue than as a law enforcement issue.

It's total BS, as long as the Drug War is in effect and cannabis remains a schedule 1 substance, there's no way to treat it as a health issue rather than a criminal issue. The law makes users criminals without exception.

    • I'm totally dissapointed in his response, he again dodged the real question being asked and continued with the same rhetoric we've been hearing for a long time now. He said he is not in favor of legalization and wants to look for new ways to curb supply and demand...same f#@ing BS as always.

Did you not understand the question Mr President? That doesn't work, in over 40 years of the official War on Drugs, that has always been the goal, curb supply and demand. WTF don't you understand about the FAILED War on Drugs? Should we keep trying the same thing hoping for different results? I believe Einstein had a saying about that...

Looks like WE THE PEOPLE will have to vote ourselves to freedom.

    • I really don't think he will make a stance unless he gets re-elected, there are Too many people against Marijuana that will actually vote and Too many Marijuana supporters tend to Not vote or are Not Eligible to vote because of the War on Drugs. Look what happened to Carter, not saying that it was THE reason he lost, but it Did hurt him.

There is more support for a rational debate today than there was when Carter was in office. With the recession going strong, this is the perfect time to push for an end to prohibition, just as prohibition was repealed during the Great Depression.

    • I already asked Obama to legalize it, and voted up over 50+ questions about legalization/decriminalization.

The most popular questions are about legalization.

    • I would be careful about believing that this will be live-streamed.

Harper promised the same thing in Canada, and it turns out, it was already scripted before-hand when CBC found the script. Not saying Obama is going to be doing the same thing, but there's a possibility it could happen.

    • Given that in 1932 the US PASSED A LAW TAXING CANNABIS AT 100 DOLLARS AN OZ, yes they really did,and it has never been repealed, all that money could go into social programs, taking the burden off the backs of the taxpayer,in addition it would remove organized crime from the mix,so legalization makes sense!

especially at this juncture. This is an unusually poor moment to make a move. This article advocates soliciting help from someone who at this moment can only lose by helping and can only gain by damaging.
To make it worse this person while not the best of allies of the cause is still less against the cause than the alternative, who is positively rabid.

    • From Scott Morgan at stopthedrugwar.org :

Honestly, it blows me away that the White House is still putting on these sorts of forums, knowing as we all do that questions about legalizing drugs will win and that, in all likelihood, the President won't answer them. Of course, the whole thing is just a big publicity stunt, but it's premised entirely on the concept that people get to vote on what issues they want the President to talk about. That's the hook, and ignoring it makes the whole exercise seem a bit ridiculous.

But you never know. Maybe this time will be different. Maybe after the hype surrounding Prop 19, the President finally has something intelligent to say about marijuana laws. Maybe that's the whole reason they're doing one of these things again, because they must certainly know by now that this question is going to dominate the forum. Maybe Obama will finally expand on the rude and inadequate response he gave us almost two years ago.

Let's not hold our breath, but I do think it's worth clicking over there and voting for the top questions to help keep them in front. Regardless of what the President does or does not say about our issue, he's creating yet another exhibit in the potency and popularity of the movement for drug policy reform. We're winning the debate on the web, and the longer that continues, the harder it becomes for anyone in our political culture to look the other way.

Cannabis crosses party lines. The use of cannabis madness has crossed party lines also. Politicians spin facts, or plead ignorant. They don't know? I don't think that is a good enough answer. We have a war, which has been going on, on American soil and they don't know the facts? If not, why not?

Unfortunately the money people control the voices of the politicians. Hemp could be an environmentally friendly industry. Grown in America, manufactured in America and sold throughout the world. Hemp is environmentally friendly and can be used to manufacture many, many products.

Sadly, money talks and those with the money don't want a 'natural' competitor. It's easier to spin 'madness'. It's time to have dialog, using facts and leave the madness at the door.

    • This is a classically dumb campaign. lets review:

Barely months into his administration Obama made his stance on pot legalization. It was fairly unequivocal.

Now we have a group asking a president that has just lost a house to a rabidly conservative movement that is currently feeling it's oats ad looking for blood to reverse himself from an already stated position to one which will make the job of his attackers, who are currently at the zenith of their power that much easier.

Why don't you ask him to do some equally stupid and self destructive things?
Maybe put on a ballet skirt and shoot his cajones off on live TV with the service pistol of one of his bodyguards?

Are you high or something? Yeah... stupid question...

This is why it is so hard to take the legalization movement seriously. They seem to come up with most of their ideas when they are loaded and it really shows.

so it is hard to take us seriously because we want to be taken seriously?

The problem is that this is perceived as third rail issue, when in fact the movement is about to boil. The people want real change.

And since you brought up his balls, if he actually had any he would admit that the emperor wears no clothes.

"This is a classically dumb campaign."
and you sir are a typicaly spineless democrat who would rather bend over and spred for the neocon christian minority than stand up for an issue that is important on multiple levels from economic to social to a majority of Americans Both democrat and republican. SHit this is like one of the only issues I have ever agreed with a republican on! The war on drugs is a failure and in the light of the finacial problems we face as a nation it is an unnessisary cost to bare. Period.

Wait... So you actually think pressuring a democrat who is currently against the ropes on left issues and has already taken a stance against this, is somehow going to HELP you?

Let me be clear here. Even if he had taken a stance in your favor in the past, now would be the absolutely perfect time for him to hang you out to dry.

There are times when poking the bear is the absolute worst thing you can do. This is one of those times.

To make it more fun you want to poke him in a way that causes as much damage as possible. The suggested question is phrased in an 'agree with me or look stupid' fashion.

      Option A:
If he agrees with you he opens himself to unstoppable trouble form people who like you a hell of a lot less than he does and you lose.

      Option B:
If he disagrees with you he underscores the arguments against your case and you drive the only party both even vaguely interested in helping you and vaguely taken seriously farther from you in support. And you lose.

-"so it is hard to take us seriously because we want to be taken seriously"-
No it is hard because the group insists on pulling unbelievably self destructive and pooch screwing moves like this one. This is a NO WIN question. Nothing good for group may come by asking this.

-"The problem is that this is perceived as third rail issue, when in fact the movement is about to boil. The people want real change."- The problem is that both are true. The people want real change AND it is a third rail issue.

The people are getting change Not real real fast change, but faster than any time in the last hundred years. All they need to do is not wake the bear. Obama is not at the moment in a position where he is capable of helping the group, but is in a position where he is almost required to hurt it and is in an excellent position to do so.

I'm pretty sure those folks concernsare what you want to address if you are a president looking to be re-elected and get the bonus of job creation and tax revinue for all the other publicly funded crap we need to take care of in this country. But its ok that you cant see past your nose there are plenty of big folks who dont wet their pants every time the republicans manage to buy themselves a chamber of congress.

YES. Yes I do ignore that. For a very good reason. That's not how the government works. Assuming it is technically a majority it's still a majority of people who:
      A) Don't generally donate to political campaigns
      B) Don't generally vote.

If those two things don't happen you don't really exist politically.

There's a older movie called "Bullworth" that describes some of these concepts pretty well.

It's a metaphorical bear. "don;t poke the bear" means don't incite a situation from which only bad things can arise.

      Heres another metaphor.

My step mother was a young child in world war II east germany and she tells a story of when the Soviet army arrived.

There was a russian peasant soldier who had been given a motorcycle to deliver messages. He was having trouble getting it started. Since he knew nothing of motorcycles he tried the standard things one does to motivate a mule, until he finally became angry with the thing, pulled his revolver and shot it several times. While it undoubtedly made the soldier feel much better it didn't help much in getting his messages delivered.

I was reminded of this story noticing your avatar.
