In what many have called a 'surprise move', King Abdullah II of Jordan sacked his prime minister, Samir Rifai, and appointed Marouf Al Bakhit with the goal of making 'practical steps, quick and concrete, to launch a process of genuine political reform, comprehensive development, and take genuine steps towards strengthening democracy'.
The move happened on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 as Jordan has been facing weeks of unrest and demands of public accountability, a wave that is sweeping the Arab world and bringing throngs of demonstrators from Tunisia to Egypt. Al Jazeera indicated that Jordanians had been calling for the resignation of prime minister Samir Rifai who is blamed for a rise in fuel and food prices and slowed political reforms. Demonstrations were taking place mostly in Jordan's capital of Amman.
As reported by the New York Times, al-Bakhit is seen as clean from corruption and is a former general and ambassador both to Israel and Turkey.
