Current TV Plans Its Reinvention: Part MSNBC, Part Discovery Channel, With More Professional Content

Now Current, with the guidance of former MTV programming chief Brian Graden and former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann, hopes to reinvent itself as a younger-skewing non-fiction network. One part MSNBC, one part Discovery Channel, with a little bit of MTV thrown in for good measure.
This morning Current held a preview of its “Upfront” presentation to advertisers at the Paley Center for Media in New York, and TVNewser was there as Gore, Hyatt, Graden and Current CEO Mark Rosenthal previewed the network’s upcoming programming slate.
There seem to be two lineups in development: the first is a news and political lineup, led by Olbermann, as well as the network’s well-received documentary series “Vanguard.” Olbermann was top of mind at the breakfast, with Gore calling him “one of America’s great provocateurs” while Hyatt was even more effusive, saying of Olbermann:
“He speaks truth to power, he calls them as he sees them, speak his mind. Al and I passionately believe that our society needs Keith’s thoughtful analysis and commentary.”

OK, after having watched 2 episodes of Infomania. My Hope is that both Kieth and Brian can raise the level of discourse of Current. The display I viewed of new generation adults acting like sophmoric, attention decifited, and simplistic adolescents, will not keep an audience of responsible people engaged for long.

Let's look at these parts of the new Current shall we. Part 1 - MSNBC: A network known to be liberally biased. Problem: Current has always been about getting the viewpoints from everyone. Left, Right, Middle...everyone. Part 2 - Discovery Channel: A network with notoriously bad ratings until it started thowing-up simpleton programming like Deadliest Catch, Monster Garage and American Chopper. Part 3 - MTV: Do I really need to say anything about this? This is a network that evereyone complains about (where is the music?) and whose top show is a documentary about a bunch of monkeys throwing poo (yes I am referring to Jersey Shore).
The heads of Current need to realize that integrity is so much more important than ratings. Bar Karma and Infomania are the only two shows with any semblance of their original programming concept. Those are the only two shows on the network that I watch now. - 1 year ago

You don't know me, so you don't know what I know about the media. I do observe that you seem to be semi-illiterate. (" ...take the reins..., not "reigns"), You, not "you". And it's not necessary to use foul language to make your point, if you have one.
Keith Olbermann has never pretended that he is not giving opinion. That is his purpose. It is up to us to educate ourselves - to read and listen to a variety of opinions and compare them to our own knowledge gained from journalistic and other sources. I believe that Keith Olbermann, throughout his career, particularly on MSNBC, has spoken Truth to Power. It is hard to find such opinion on the airwaves, which have been dominated in recent years by the likes of FOX. This is why his loss to MSNBC is so great, and his gain, for CURRENT is so welcome.

First of all, literacy isn't about spelling or grammar, it's about reading comprehension. (and it is you, not You. you is a pronoun.)
That being said, you didn't seem to comprehend any of the points I was trying to make.
I'm not really sure where you fit into the above conversation, as I was replying to a post made by cruzankenny, but you seem to share some of the same delusions about journalism.Opinions have NOTHING to do with actual, factual journalism. They are just that, opinions. While I'm willing to listen to KO's opinion's on baseball, his commentary on anything else has no more substance than any other talking face on television. I admire that he admits that he is only spewing opinions, but i certainly don't respect him as a journalist.
You're obviously new to Current, which explains a lot. Current used to be a place where people could go and not have to hear any spin, and that's why a lot of people with actual intelligence and a pragmatic worldview used to watch and contribute to it. I can imagine that you'll like all of the new changes to current (such as more reality programming, more misinformed geriatric sycophants chanting rhetoric, and less actual journalism). I hope you feel cool now that you've "discovered" this site after it's ceased to be anything that it used to be.

Just because a statement is opinion does not render it invalid, unless it pretends to be hard news. This sort of thing is practiced regularly at FOX, but not at all by KO. I question, therefore, your use of the word "spewing". What purpose does it serve? Are you spewing here?
Because I am following Keith Olbermann to this outlet, I am new to Current, and I must say, not impressed by your welcome. BTW, it is "You", not "you", due to being the first word of the sentence, "You contradict yourself."

The term "sheeple" would not be used by someone who didn't belong to an ideological collective himself. It is odious to accuse others of accepting everything at face value, or being in a herd, and engaging in collective behavior, simply because you don't agree with them.
My shot at your grammer was because you felt so free to use the "s" word in your first response. Anyone who claims to know as much as you do might be expected to be more meticulous in posting, and therefore, opens himself to such critiquing.
OK, I get it. The reason you're here, is because you seem to have a need to feel superior. You belong to the first generation of Current participants. Perhaps you believe that Current should freeze at a particular favorite point in time of yours, and those who come after must be, by their very nature, lesser beings. That's fine. Enjoy it.
I am not interested in your childish rantings. I have come to Current because I have admired Keith Olbermann's work at MSNBC and wish to keep in touch with his opinions. Since that causes you such pain, you are free to stop responding. Current will evolve well or poorly, depending on many factors. If Keith Olbermann does as well for Current as he did for MSNBC, then they will flourish. It may not please you, but the nature of life is change.

It really doesn't matter anyways. This channel is dead. It used to be about the viewers, now it's about profits and KO.
Opinions on any mainstream media outlet don't matter to me. They aren't reality. They're rhetoric. They divide and confuse the ignorant people that listen to them.
Current didn't used to air garbage. Now it's going to be all about garbage.
It'll be ok though. My generation founded current and if you take it away we'll just come up with something better. Someone will adopt their old programming model and it will be successful, however KO will just get fired again for being a clown.

Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.

Everyone knows that the climate is indeed constantly changing, buy it is ludicrous to not think the sun is the major factor in that change. It is also deceitful to lie to you about the relationship between temperature and COI2 concentrations. CO2 rises as a result of temperature rise, not the opposite. When temps increase, CO2 increases. He had the foresight, too bad the far right is SO near sighted....with this launch I expect more and more fair-mindedness (and most importantly THINKING viewers) to promote true discussions. remember EVERYTHING can be "googled" and/or "binged".....honesty IS the best policy. we might not like the truth(sometimes) but the truth , nonetheless, is far more formidable than the nonsense spewed (and lies invented from half-truths). Recruiting K.O. was a great move -- but Current also must make a dramatic gambit to increase audience. Suggest a deal with a major broadcast station group that would put Current TV on broadcast "digichannels" available free over the air in major markets coast to coast. Any loss in cable derived revenues would be superceded by additional advertising revenues resulting from the larger audience. Broadcasters are under pressure to justify their spectrum allocation by programming these channels. Current TV, the broadcasters and the public would benefit from this broadcast strategy -- and those who can't afford cable (or choose not to buy it) would have free access to your programming. What's not to like? I've got more where this came from... http://NowPublic.com/scrivener

Is this his first day posting things on the internet? Almost every site has spell check. His learning curve shows his complete lack of knowledge.

I would like to see only one Reality Show on Current TV, a concept combining "Biggest Loser" with "Survivor," no Madison Ave beautiful people, just big eaters dealing with starvation and competition for food. Call it "American Preview", our formerly fastfood addicted culture meets food scarcity.

We have this american life , more reality based than those faces of reality you have listed . And more insightful . MTV would do that , so pitch it to THEM .

Looking forward to watching this evolve. Multimedia is the future & lots of us want to participate. Any POSSIBLE way to make this available in the ROKU Channel Store so those of us who are sans cable can get to see the TV side of this great resource? I hope so!
For now, I'm just enjoying participating here while trying to help get the word out to my HP friends.

Reading a little further, received the GREAT NEWS that Current is already available in the Channel Store, under Newscaster. Fab!

Re: Current on Roku. Read further and found that you surely must have found it by now. Had been watching the Protesters in Cairo, but the streaming on ALJazeera become impossible to watch.

You've been a lib idiot since the 60's, huh? Have you saved the world yet, or have you helped destroy the world through the funding of ridiculous government programs?

Couldn't agree with you more, kerriberri. The interactive aspect of it is what really appeals to me. Plus, they seem hungry for talent. There may be big opportunities just waiting to be explored.

As Current moves into the next decade, it does not have to loose the social media network that it originally envisioned itself as, especially the web site. There are 24 hours in a day, and it does not have to be filled with news and commentary. Current could keep a couple of time slots open for viewer contribution on the TV side, while keeping the web open for this as well.
There is nothing more powerful than people keeping the world informed as to what is going on. The Major journalists have left Egypt, but the protesters keep the world informed with their uploads. Current should find room to keep this kind of thing alive.

Agreed; allowing participation/reciprocation of info is key to keeping the ethos of Current alive.

i feel that you are completely wrong.
current was never meant to be an MSNBC. It was meant to be the anti-MSNBC, Fox News, CNN.
you wouldn't know though, because you were probably on a different bandwagon at the time.

My comments here and the ones I posted on KO coming to Current really stated that I do not want it to become MSNBC. But money is money and nothing operates for free. My hope is that KO coming over does not change Current into something that it is not. Real news will be televised by the people on the street uploading content. Current needs to stay at the forefront of this change to information dissemination.

i hope that it doesn't change too, but by removing their Viewer Created Content, they've already made a pretty big change.

I just reciently heard of current tv on Thom Heartmann. To hear that KO will be back on the air is fanstactic. Now to figure out what this network is all about?

The statement, "Five years later, and that idea has still failed to gain traction," is a misrepresentation. Current's initial focus upon viewer-created content was successful in building a loyal and engaged fan base. However, as in any large business, the need for cash flow prompted concern in Current's management, and Current has now gone the way of most businesses in America and elsewhere. I will miss the folksy and amateurish nature of what Current was as it transforms itself into just another media "outlet."
Anyone may claim that Current's birth was unsuccessful, but I know better. Please skip the revisionist history.
