let me revise that its a small number of staff that abuse them but many are one prescription drugs that can be abused. My ex just got got up into it. Then refused help and began using illegal versions of morhine.its a shame..I lived near the houston med center and have many friends who work there an none abuse drugs..

Hmm.. I am a c.c.r.n. and handle narcs all the time.. never thought about doing them... I'm so worried about it that if I'm in pain at home and someone offers me a norco I'll pass.. I don't have a script for it and rather not risk it if for some odd reason I needed to be tested.. but yes djmathias... another example is when I worked at a hospital where the ICU nurse coded on the unit...

nurses and hospital staff with access to drugs are more likely to abuse them..thats why hospitals have drug treatment options so the offender can get their licence back..my ex was a c.c.r.n. and abused morphine till she got caught. then offered treatment for free..she declined and lost her licence..thats why shes my ex

My Husband suffered an incident the last time he was hospitalized.
After his medication was administered through his IV he was still in pain.
He told the nurse that he had not felt the medication going into his vein as he usually did.
She argued with him and told him he could have no more for 4 hours.
After 4 hours of pain a new nurse came on shift and noticed that the tube had fallen out of his vein and the medication had spilled onto the gauze and tape they had wrapped around his arm.
From then on they kept a very close eye on his IV.
Aside from this one nurse, they took very good care of him. - 1 year ago

What no one felt the need to confront her or even stop the operation? When one places their life and well being in the hands other humans being, one hopes that the competent among them will somehow protect them from the incompetent. Guess not so much.

I was wondering the same thing, instead of addressing his pain, they held him down and continued. Unbelievable!

She should change her career, nursing is not her calling. And I think she should "women up".

An an RN and a nursing professor I just have to add a comment here. Please don't judge my profession by this woman, This nurse should be jailed. What she did is against the law as well as unethical behavior. She should and will likely lose her license. I do want to tell people that she is an aberration in our profession.
Most nurses are passionate and committed to the safety, comfort and welfare of the patients in our care. - 1 year ago

I am sure you are right. It is the ones that aren't that screw it up for the others.

Do criminals "screw it up" for all the law abiders? It is wrong to judge a whole profession for the acts of a few. I had an experience with a nurse that was stealing pain medication from a relative, but every other nurse that I have come in contact with has been wonderful.

My mother went through surgery with no pain meds because of an incompetent person on staff and when the physician couldn't figure out why she hurt so much the resident imbecile stated that they hadn't given her any anesthetic. My mom said all she could do was lay there with tears rolling from her eyes because NO ONE would listen to her. They thought she needed to "man up" I suppose. She should have sued them, but she isn't the type of person who does.

As a nurse, I find her to be the lowest form of being. I won't dare put human in front of it. It's disgusting and deplorable.

Hospitals do not require a drug test in order to work their. The Garbage man gets drug tested!!!! Why wouldn't they want to test a hospital employee that will be working around drugs all day long?!?!? There are a lot of coked out people working at the hospital, propably due to the 16 hour shifts (double pay). Also there are a lot of employees stealing meds to sell them. The hospitals ignore the problem.

I have actually heard of that myself. Never mind the complete disregard to the patient who is suffering, but what kind of person feels the need to "suck the meds" off of a patch that was on another person. You would have to be some kind of junkie. No one notices that?

Despite the nurse stealing the patient's medication, he still never should have been allowed to suffer through a procedure like that. Some people react strongly to medications, while others do not. It is not atypical to have a patient need more pain medication than others, and his needing to be held down to finish a procedure should have prompted the doctors to order more medication be given.
Not that this is any excuse at all for the nurse, but the doctor performing the procedure should have responded better to the patients needs as well.
As for the nurse, I hope she gets the rehabilitation she needs and is then punished appropriately for inflicting so much unnecessary pain to this innocent man.
