"On Feb. 9th, California Rep. Pete Stark (D-13th District) introduced House Resolution 81, calling for the designation of February 12, 2011 as Darwin Day in recognition of the ground-breaking work of Charles Darwin and the importance of science to bettering the human condition.

"Darwin’s birthday is a good time for us to reflect on the important role of science in our society,” Representative Stark said. “It is also a time to redouble our efforts to ensure that children are being taught scientific facts, not religious dogma, and to fight back against those who seek to undermine the science of climate change for political ends.”

Check out the full text of the resolution plus links to email your congress person!

    • I enjoyed Darwin's work and support the sciences and all, but I wish California Representative Pete Stark would introduce some legislation that is more pertinent to the survival of the Republic.

I can celebrate Darwin on my own. I need our representatives in Washington to write laws that correct and defend the sinking ship of State that has taken a near fatal blow from USS Wall Street.

Didn't we used to call America a democracy? The right and the Texas schoolboards decided to start calling us a republic as a means of indoctrinating children into believing that democrats are un-American.
It used to be that republic referred to communist countries like The peoples Republic of China, and The United Soviet Socialist Republic.
Otherwise right on, we have enough cards to buy in February.

I would refer you to the Constitution:

      __________________________________________________

      Article IV, section 4:

      Republican government

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

      __________________________________________________

At the time of the framing of the Constitution a republic was defined as a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch or a nation or other political unit having such a government. In a republic, power is held by the citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives governing according to law.

Now, we don't necessarily have this anymore, but it was the intent......

we are a republic. you don't personally vote on every issue, your representative does. we democratically elect the representatives.
you need understand that being a knee-jerking text-book ideologue doesn't come across in print.

    • hmmm, wasn't there some kind of Dawin Day, or maybe it was an anniversary year or something, but I do remember our website people adding all kinds of Darwinian presence to our public persona last year.

2009 was supposed to have been the year of science, I actually had a bumper sticker for that, but I don't know who declared it the year of science, think I picked the bumper sticker up at an AAAS conference. I like the idea of celebrating science, but like Saladin, not sure Darwin should be the focus.

    • Uh oh! Should there REALLY be another reason for creationists to say and do stupid things? They're going to want equal billing and demand a William Jennings Bryant Day. One good thing, Fox Noise commentary should be particularly GOOFY when they get hold of this. Someone pop some popcorn; let's sit back and watch, hey?

    • I think it sends the completely wrong message, especially since most of the important work in regards to evolution was not done by Darwin himself.

Better to have a science day, but ultimately I really don't care. I don't need Federal Validation to have fun on a holiday.

    • Saladin:

I agree and disagree, and back and forth. :)

Yes, it sends the wrong message to creationists; especially since their mindset is about blindly following a single source, the Bible, they think the Origin of Species is the Bible of "evolutionists". This gives the false impression that evolution is all about Darwin.

But, the opinions of nutjobs should stop us from acknowledging the accomplishments of a great man, or his contributions to science.

And every day should be science day! :)
