Antigay former U.S. senator Rick Santorum, a potential 2012 Republican presidential candidate, has found that the use of his name in connection with anal sex is a hyperlink that’s hard to break, Roll Call reports.

In 2003 sex-advice columnist Dan Savage was seeking to mock Santorum for his homophobic statements, such as remarks he made in an interview that year to the effect that legalization of gay sex could lead to recognition of “man on child” and “man on dog” relationships. Savage held a competition asking his readers to come up with a new definition for “Santorum,” and the winning entry referred to a by-product of anal intercourse. Now a Google search for “Santorum” will frequently turn up that meaning of the word.

Roll Call consulted technology experts, who said there was little Santorum could do to prevent Web searches from finding sites with that definition. The politician himself “sounded slightly defeated” when asked about his “Google problem” recently, the publication reported. “It’s one guy,” Santorum told Roll Call. “You know who it is. The Internet allows for this type of vulgarity to circulate. It’s unfortunate that we have someone who obviously has some issues. But he has an opportunity to speak.”

Santorum added, however, that the phenomenon is an indication of “incivility” in politics. “You want to talk about incivility,” he said. “I don’t know of anybody on the left who came to my defense for the incivility with respect to those things.”

In response to Santorum’s statements, Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund spokesman Dennis Dison told Roll Call, “I think that civility in politics is a fantastic goal. ... Speaking from the LGBT community, we wish he would practice it.”

    • Hasn't he ever played dogs and cats?

I've got a dog on man relationship, my dog loves standing on my foot and biting it.

LOL I keep holding the camera the wrong way. :D

Uh-oh, I'm sure Santorum thinks wading with your dog is a gateway activity to frequenting bestiality bath houses. Keep an eye out for the black helicopters.

P.S. OMG your doggy is so kewt!!!

    • Santorum will, like all the others who shoot their mouths off about gays, eventually be found out to be a closeted gay.

Imagine how confused and freaked out he must be about having the gorgeous and brilliant Dan Savage coming after him. I think there's a latent BDSM thing going on there, too. It's mighty crowded in the fevered subconscious of Mr. Santorum.

    • Well deserved for him, but probably not the rest of his family. Still, very, very funny though.

Someone who equates homosexuality with child molestation and bestiality is in no place to criticize another's "incivility".

    • I feel bad for the guy. I mean, he's right, no Liberals came to his defense when this happened. I feel like I should apologize. Santorum, I'm sorry that you made blanket bigoted remarks about homosexuals that painted you as a target for such a campaign.

Next time, try to remember that these are human beings you're talking about. Maybe then they would respected you as a human being, and not "The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex. "

    • LMAO! This is great! Thank you Dan Savage! The definition for "Santorum" is perfect. I mean, who really has the problem here? This Santorum was always mentioning that "man on dog" reference. Why? Is that something he has experience with?

    • Geez, little Rickey Santorum lives in my neighborhood and was my congressional representative for too many years! He was the GOP hopeful for President.
It was SO good to see him trounced in 2006!
You should have seen the bumper stickers here in SW PA.
It was ugly and beautiful all at the same time.
I am happy to see my neighbors in Pittsburgh become enlightened and throw this bigoted bum out!!!

This reminds me that sexual psychologists believe that Santorum like characters, who, like Henny Penny, run around screaming Gay, Foul, Gay, Anal..., are usually attempting to mask or drown out the inclinations and preoccupations which they recognize as their own, but are struggling to reconcile within their own psyches, or hiding from the public. Santorum, I think thou doth protest too much, and, your slip is showing...

    • Rick's a good man who spoke the truth and he certainly struck a chord with the LGBT and this hate-America crowd. Pretty pathetic that they are so bent out of shape by Rick's truthfull and honest comments that they spend time on some stupid contest. Get a life.

At the end of the day it just raised Rick's stock with his base. Well, I guess when you throw the truth in people's face they, as Col. Jessup said, ""just can't handle it"!

Colonel Jessup is a fictitious character from a movie. This is your evidence? This is not critical thinking. You have some serious issues with discerning the difference between fact and opinion. Good luck with the rest of your life.

My favorite thing was watching Fox News when the Tea Party was just getting started and they kept saying tea baggers with all kinds of sincerity and it was all I could do not to fall on the floor laughing. Are they really so clueless they didn't know what tea bagging is?

ROFL- I know! I laughed until my stomach hurt. One of them will still do it occasionally, and whoever is standing by will rush up to them and whisper something in their ear....followed by a tense expression of thinly-veiled mortification...and a little stammering.."um..I mean Tea Partiers..uh, that is to say Party Members...um.". The gift that keeps on giving and giving....

    • Itsbatman_Durr:

You may be correct that not ALL conservatives fear homosexuals. However, there are recent studies -- sociological, psychological, behavioral -- that put forth a link between fearful personality and conservative politics. Fear of change, fear of government, fear of the other, fear of being a crime victim, fear of national invasion, fear of gays, fear of national bankruptcy, fear of god's retribution, fear of multi-culturalism, etc, all run deep through conservative politics. One only has to listen to what matters most to them and it will become apparent. Granted, some are rational fears, but some are not so rational. Santorum's remarks are illustrative.

By the way, if his logic is taken to its conclusion [slippery slope argument], if I buy a drink at my local quick stop shop, I will have no control over my buying there and will eventually buy everything in the store, without the will or ability to stop myself. Oh my!

Slippery Slope arguments are fallacious and are based on fear.

    • Itsbatman_Durr:

Studies -- Are you saying all studies are untrustworthy? It is good to question methods and results, looking for bias, but to reject all academic work as unreliable is a bit too much. You seem to be suggesting that because there is some bad social science out there that all social science should not be taken seriously. Really?

Labeling -- You have a point there. Not sure pointing out the obvious "fear" theme that runs with the right's agenda is a label per se but I agree that there is pernicious name-calling on both sides that can and should be eliminated.

Embrace -- Are you asking us to embrace bigotry? Not sure what we are to embrace here. Embrace the fearful, ok, they are human just like all of us. Embrace conservatives, yes as our fellow citizens in democratic debate. Embrace their philosophy, not a chance without a rational argument. Santorum's argument is logically and factually fallacious at best and bigoted at worse.

no i am suggesting, and now saying, that you saying there are 'studies' that show most of any group are anything is silly and pointless without naming them and validating their findings.

and as for what we need to start embracing i meant we all need to start embracing each other as members of humankind, not as right or left, white or black, gay or straight

Fair enough, a small sample, but apparently statistically significant by peer view standards or it would never get published.

Did you read the rest of the article?

"... The results, which will be published next year, back up a study that showed that some people were born with a "Liberal Gene" that makes people more likely to seek out less conventional political views.

The gene, a neurotransmitter in the brain called DRD4, could even be stimulated by the novelty value of radical opinions, claimed the researchers at the University of California."
      ----

There are other scientific studies suggesting links to political views and the brain. I only provided [and stated] this was the latest study and it seems to support other studies suggesting this link.

Accept it or reject it, your call. I am not obligated to prove this to you. My statements remains valid -- there are studies making this connection.

Try doing a google search of "fear, conservative" and see what else you get, just for giggles.

Sorry guy, but it will be a cold motherfucking day in hell before I embrace the people who have been trying desperately my whole adult life to take away my ownership and control of my body by making abortion illegal. It's been depressing and stressful having to spend my whole life with this battle. It's like someone is trying to make it legal to rape you. Conservatives are evil to the core- they are completely lacking in empathy and want to legislate their religion and heartlessness. If you want to say all Republicans are not conservative, I'll agree with that, though I have to wonder why they are still Rethugs. But there are no good conservatives. It's the nature of the beast.

Eric Hoffer in his book "The True Believe" calls it a fact screen. They believe their philosophy holds the entire truth and anything that is counter to that "truth" is ignored. He claims that true believers have a religious faith in the correctness of their position and has power over fact.

Post script here. The study actually surveys 2 professors and some students, the number not indicated but also states that an addition 90 students, whose brains were scanned at previous time were post asked their political views and included in the data. So at least 94 and perhaps more where in this study.
