Red highlights get student suspended

A spicy new hairstyle got a 12-year-old Texas girl a lot of attention, but not all of it was good.

"They were cool," said Stephanie Plato, who got red highlights for her birthday. "They make my hair look better and makes it look cute."

Turns out the red highlights were in violation of the school's dress code and school officials suspended her.

Plato was pulled out of her sixth grade class Friday. The school called her mom, saying the highlights were a distraction.

"I do think it's bright and it's brighter than what I intended it to be, but I don't think it's a distraction," said Jessica Leyer, Stephanie's mother. "I mean, I don't think children are going to sit in class and not be able to concentrate on their school work because her hair is red."

The school handbook says students may not wear inappropriate hair color, such as red.

Stephanie won't be allowed back in school until her original color returns. She's since darkened her hair to blend better with the highlights and get back to class.
