To Those Who Second-Guess Our Police State Status: Shame on You!

I just received the following news and I am way too upset to write a coherent piece on this. Ray McGovern is a good friend of mine. We live less than 10 miles apart. Together we have participated in many events and protests. He is one of the most informed, articulate, gentle, peace-loving and peace-seeking human beings I’ve ever known…For me, this hits too close to home: My father was similarly brutalized by dictator regimes, and that was only the beginning, before it escalated to being tortured and having his toenails pulled out by the state police. Why? He was a doctor, a surgeon with an inquiring mind, and he spoke out whenever he could against dictatorships and for liberties. Participating in peaceful demonstrations, encouraging others to rise up for their rights, and reading authors such as Steinbeck (the American author black-listed there as ‘communist and anarchist’) landed him on the list of to-be-punished and pacified…

Right now, at this point, all I have to say to those who second-guess our nation’s police state status is this: “Shame on you!” As for my irate minority friends over here at Boiling Frogs, please help disseminate this news, because the scum bag media won’t;’ thank you.
At Clinton Speech: Veteran Bloodied, Bruised & Arrested for Standing Silently
As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave her speech at George Washington University yesterday, condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not allow free expression, 71-year-old Ray McGovern was grabbed from the audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain clothes, brutalized and left bleeding in jail. She never paused speaking. When Secretary Clinton began her speech, Mr. McGovern remained standing silently in the audience and turned his back. Mr. McGovern, a veteran Army officer who also worked as a C.I.A. analyst for 27 years, was wearing a Veterans for Peace t-shirt.
Blind-sided by security officers who pounced upon him, Mr. McGovern remarked, as he was hauled out the door, “So this is America?” As you see, Mr. McGovern is covered with bruises, lacerations and contusions inflicted in the assault.

Mr. McGovern is being represented by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF). “It is the ultimate definition of lip service that Secretary of State Clinton would be trumpeting the U.S. government’s supposed concerns for free speech rights and this man would be simultaneously brutalized and arrested for engaging in a peaceful act of dissent at her speech,” stated attorney Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the PCJF.

    • Hilary is a hypocrite...yeah, big surprise. Nobody gets where she is by being honest and upholding the law, and you have to take note of the fact that she so smugly ignores what is going on right in front of her. Never liked her, never trusted a damn thing she said or did, just another puppet.

    • I got lost in this story somewhere in between Hillary Clinton's police & the author's father getting tortured by some nameless "Dictator Regime".

      Why point out his Father's favorite author, but not give the name of the 'regime / state police' who pulled out his fingernails?

      If my father was tortured by a regime I would name them. Esecially when the whole point of the story was to compare Clinton to them. Maybe this guy was mistreated, but this tale is misleading. This guy is not 'Covered in bruises' and I don't buy that he simply turned his back from the stage and was gang tackled by the 'police state'. More likely it was his form of protest + Poltical security vigilance 1 month post Giffords shootings that lead to him getting a 'Couple' of bruises.

      A dozen people taking the front row and turning their backs on a politicians public speech = good protesting.
      A single person doing the same = creepy
      Don't act like John Malcovich in a crowd and security won't bruise your arm when they grab you.

      Note: I didn't write the story.. I posted it. But, the act in question and the response to Ray McGovern standing silently with his back to Mrs Clinton.... What Mr. McGovern was doing was all within Mr. McGovern's constitutional right to do so... The response by the Secret Service was in error and also a direct violation of Mr. McGovern's Rights.

      In addition... I find it very hypocritical of Hillary Clinton in contrast to her comments about freedom and the right to protest in Egypt, Iran and Libya.

      The Big Picture is very Important...

      The violation of any one person's rights... I s a violation of all our rights.

      As This touchy topic.... It will be very relevant and extremely important in the days and weeks ahead.... starting in Wisconsin.

    • Sibel, Yes, revolting! And I mean literally. Perhaps this concern should be included in a list of demands to be addressed in the only way that seems to be effective these late days:

      If a "backward", less privileged people like the Egyptians, without a precedence for individual liberty and protections, can coerce changes in a begrudging government like Mubarak's, isn't it sinful to accept that we, the people of the United States, with a legacy of individual rights and liberties, can't do the same?!? We need a progressive activist organization within every U.S. community, with the ability to act in sync on cue; Middle Eastern style. If corporate America is imprisoning us with the effects of their control of government, why can't we do what half naked Indians did to Great Britain? If we were to stage work stoppage protests throughout this country, simultaneously and on cue, we could bring corporate America to it's knees! And, this may be our single biggest and best weapon against the war they are waging. Consider, boycotting every socially irresponsible corporation, and staging a national work stoppage culminating with a meet and greet on the capital lawn. I only hope that the streets surrounding the Capital are not so overcrowded, that our legislators can't get in or out! That would be upsetting, wouldn't it? P.S. Progressives United is not a new political agenda, merely a new name. We need to thread the multitude of small individual progressive orgs. into a cooperative. Who else has time to work on this?

    • It is incomprehensible to me that Americans still believe that we are free to dissent. This is what dictators do. This is what happens where there is no free speech. I don't get why Americans put up with this ever happening even once. What is wrong with us?

      FACT: The people of the United States know less about what going on inside our country and outside our country than the rest of the world.

      WHY?:
      Because, our media here in the USA for many years has intentionally controlled the Topics, the depth of conversation on all levels of programming in our media.... The results: Our media, fills everyones head with distractions about nonsense and fluff from Hollywood, to Lady Gaga and, Justin Bibier to other gossip and misstatements and lies as we saw clearly with WMD and Bush and have replaced "FACT" and the "TRUTH"... with disinformation blatant Lies and approved spin about our governments roll in world.

      When that is done....Then it creates "Disinformation Zombies" who believe all those Lies as the truth and as fact! Case in point look a what happened in Arizona... Look at the Shooter how pre programmed he looked... He felt that he was in fact saving the world from Socialism babbling what ever talking point he was fed.

      As I have discovered in Egypt with many of the Pro Mubarak supporters who were violently attacking the peaceful unarmed Pro Democracy demonstrators.... These Mubarak Thugs.... Were also under that same delusion that they were protecting Egypt from outside agents and Foreign Provocateurs. These "Media Zombies" have been programmed by the effects of lies and disinformation through the media to the viewers.

      If our media here in the USA were the pioneers in this science.... We (The American Public) starting with children and Cartoons to "Good Morning America" to Glenn Beck have created the test environment for all of us Lab animals participating in this ongoing media experiment... That continues to fill the viewers heads with disinformation distractions & lies.

      So, what ever media you watch... FOX,ABC,NBC,CBS,MSNBC,CNBC, CNN, and PBS They all do it! Some networks are more extreme than others but every one of those networks target different demographic markets... and viewer to cover the entire population. So all networks do it.

      Our Main Stream Broadcast and print media today, continues to try and divide all of us, into demographic audiences groups, to manipulate view-points and attitudes with spin. A technique designed to control information with pre-established and accepted information from product placement to... a predefined status quo.

      You ask... What is wrong with us?

      Answer: The Media.

      Lately I have been working full-time on what is happening in the media in Egypt.... I see a lot of similarities, especially is their TV media... I have been watching some of the programming on one network; NILE-TV. Relatively state the art Productions like here and even more shocking was, the same percentage of Fluff mixed with spin... just like TV here in the USA! First I was impressed... Very similar styles as well as the application of programming percentage rations.

      Then I ask myself... Who taught NILE-TV the ropes? How did they learn the demographic techniques to manipulate their public like this? And then, it dawned on me...We did, all "MADE IN THE USA" Through the same government agency that's been running the show In Egypt for years... Our very own CIA. The same agency who taught the Egyptians the best methods to extract the truth by Advanced Water-boarding Techniques.... Is in fact also the same agency that instructs the Egyptian Media the best ways to hide the truth in it's TV Media and it's Press. That explains it.... Using the CIA's best Media contractors to expose the Egyptian Government to the science of manipulating public opinion to control information and control their citizens. (All Made right here in the USA! )

      Our Media here in the USA have gotten very good at misinforming the public... we have a lot of practice..Because we have been doing it for years with our media! So, NILE-TV had very good teachers in the world to teach them how to manipulate the Egyptian public.

      But what is really inspiring to see is how the Egyptian people... after watching NILE-TV for years at one point realized.... NILE-TV was a total useless piece of garbage, And at that point....The Egyptians just started to turn it off! They, went to other sources to get the news information like on the internet...

      NILE-TV is kind of like an Egyptian FOX NEWS. EGYPT has otherTelevision networks like Dream-Tv that are less hard core more like ABC or NBC and CBS designed targeted to another Egyptian demographic audience..with a little more Fluff... All media in Egypt was subject to the same restrictions a Positive Government slant and "non-confrontational" a lot like the TV here in the USA.

      I have owned my own Television Networks... and have 20 years of background...In broadcast Television my Networks broadcast both domestically and intentionally. I am well aware in the science of programming designed to demographic target audiences.

      I will end this on a positive note....

      If the Egyptian people can turn off their TV and wake-up and march in the streets for Freedom and Real Democracy... and Stand up against Corruption.... Then we can also do it here too !!!

      He did not say one word that I heard until he was being dragged out. At that point, what he said was very appropriate, in American; maybe not in China. Hillary is not a god or a king, she is a mouth piece of the American government and WE do not have to agree with the government last I checked, and............... that is protected by the constitution, or at least it used to be.

      Can you show me where there is a law that says we can not turn our back on a speaker?

      was he a member of the press? was he causing a distraction? was he invited? was the confrence closed or open? did the cops ask him to leave politly? all these questions and more are bounching around in my head and all i can find is 2 articles filled with rhetoric and very little fact. your video clip only showed the end of whatever happened. there isn't even a non-biased source anywhere related to this article so I want to know if this is a politicl driven hyped-up attack or an unjustified removal. and BTW the cops in the video clip showed great restraint and it seemed like MR. McGovern was the one causing more damage.

      How is asking for more information critizing or fascist? I'm plan on weighing personally both sides of this before I formulate an opinion so i can base it on fact and actions taken instead of emotion and rhetoric. Thus the questions I've already asked plus what happened before the camera swung around? Is there any reporters in the audience who have made any statements about what they saw? Has anybody thought of asking the Security team? Is there an a hotel security camera that might have caught even a crude black and white of it? Instead of jumping off the gun there needs to be a period of planning and analaysis.

      and its the internet dude, i'm not dumb enoguh to bandy my full name around, comes from growing up suspicious of everything. At least I use a face pic even if it is a couple years old.

      and yes, I try to give back a little to the world to. I volunteer down at the Domestic Violence Project in Solano County. Specificly I work with a unit who helps women and men who are victims of Domestice abuse from a member of law enforcement, Firemen, Military members, and other criticle services personal so they can have an experienced voice and helping hand who knows how tricky the situation can be. Since as we all know that when we involve the cops or government these victims need help being protected from the backlash of abusive assholes misusing their power.

      During the week I volunteer as a free tutor for after school programs that carter to those children who don't have a rich mommy and daddy to help them. Specificly I deal with history and try to include as much honest non-whitewashed information as I can because I know glazing over will just hurt them in the long run. i also teach all of my children their rights as an american citizen, whats considerd protected speech and actions and what isn't. Their miranda rights, their legal rights, various court cases that play into how they exercise their rights and as much protection as I can give them.

      and on saturday nights I volunteer to duel teach adults for their GED qualifications and immigrants for their citizenship tests. There is too much corruption in this world. By helping my kids and my students learn how to think logically and how to look up historical information instead of just accepting it as fact, I belive is the best way I can fight corruption.

If as a reporter with "WH Press Credentials" It is a slippery slope...       Alright I see that you have a lack of understanding of pain. Just one more little question have YOU ever been arrested or detained against your will? You seem like a stand up guy who wants to believe in the system and for you it may take a personal experience to sway YOUR perception. I, on the other hand have witnessed abuse by the law and have felt the pain. Mr McGovern is a national hero and has, and is still serving this country with honer and dignity. This is a free country not totalitarian regime. Ray is trying to keep it that way while you surrender your only nonviolent tool. I have no further need to converse with you on this subject.

    • This is horrible and, well not unexpected. Ray has been very awesome in his efforts to promote government transparency. He is lucky the powers that be have not just outright killed him. I stand in solidarity with Ray and will keep sharing the abuses of the state with all who will listen. Voted up.

Do you even know a coherent definition of that word? its historical place or its modern place?I've noticed over the past couple of months that when people ask for unbiased information you critize them. when people present a slightly different oppinion than you, you immediatly dive into name-calling and mis-direction. Is that how you plan on helping your cause, because turning into a fringe version of Fox isn't going to help you at all.

      Both Ray McGovern and Sibel Edmunds have done more for the world and and for your Freedom than you could ever even imagine.

You seem to be trying to say I critize when I ask questions, so is it safe to assume that by asking more questions you're just going to keep repeating the idea that I'm critizing something? Like you said, your own words and actions speak volumes about you too. Instead of responding to honestly asked questions you jumped into self-defense mode and got offended that anyody would dare to question the official truth you were spreading. you seem to be concentrationg on the fact the while on the internet people use icons. not sure where you're going with this but it does sound like an attempt to distract. In fact you devoted 2 full paragraphs to a common internet feature and not one period to any of the questions I asked. Talking about a topic unrelated to anything in the current discussion an excessive amount is a tactic straight from the NewsCrops playbook.

      Perhaps she was emotional, but it seems to me to be justified. I've known we live in a police state since my teenage nephew was taken to a police station and severely beaten for making a smart-assed comment when a policeman bumped into him. We took pictures and went to a lawyer who advised us nothing could be done. This was in 1982.
