When your countries economy is floundering and has reached astronomical debt you get desperate. Obama plans on taxing Canadians for visiting the good ole US of A and spending their hard earned dollars. Fortress America, say good bye to your cousin from the north who drops over on the weekends. You suck! http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2011/02/16/obama-budget-canada-fee.html

    • this is not really all that outrageous. italy's had a tourist tax and is bringing it back to try and recoup some of their deficits, and theirs is much higher (roma just instituted a 1E pp per DAY for "tourist" purchases including museum tickets, hotels etc -- which means a family of 4 would now pay an extra 12E to stay in a hotel for 3 days on top of the hotel cost). it's no secret also that many foreign countries will often charge you more for everything simply because you are a foreigner. the opposing argument, of course, is "that's them! this is america! that's why we're so much better than they are!" but, really, we're just poorer. and whether it makes us "better" people or not to charge everyone the same posted price for our products, it does nothing for our growing deficit.

Perhaps if you weren't such a war mongering country you might save lives and billions of dollars by staying home and minding your own business instead of taking it out on your "friends".

there's no reason to be argumentative here; i am merely stating facts. most other countries have tourist taxes regardless of whether the country is a "friend" or not. any halfway intelligent individual also knows that america is not full of war mongers. the country is split quite evenly (as evidenced by our elections of the last twenty years) between those who believe we should be invading other countries, and those that do not, and still more that fall somewhere in the middle.

being indignant over a tax our government is asking you to pay does not excuse you to be stereotypical and rude. saying americans are war mongers is no more appropriate than saying all canadians are passive and utterly ineffectual to the rest of the world.

When I refer to Americans as being war mongering I refer to your government. Here's a question...When was the last time your country wasn't at war with some other country or faction? If you doubt my statement on "war mongering" why don't you watch the video "Why We Fight" and educate yourself. I have no intention of being rude or stereotyping your country, merely stating facts. BTW we are quite proud of our passivity and peaceful nature.

i never doubted your statement, i took issue with the fact that it was directed at "me" instead of my country's government. america is, for better or quite often for worse, filled with opinionated and vastly different people.

you have the privilege of having been born into a country that had a reputation for being peaceful long before you ever existed. we have the burden of the exact opposite. i have been told by an american soldier that because i am unwilling to fight for causes in which i do not believe, to maintain a policing status with which i do not agree, that i am less of a citizen than he is, and i might as well leave. it increasingly feels, in my country, that it would be impossible to elect a government that is representative of its people. the east and west of the usa are more similar to many other countries than to their own conservative, aggressive, gun-toting center and south. but we are presently trapped by an outdated constitution, electoral college and government structure that leaves us continually enslaved to the will of 51% of our citizens.

Don't you ever believe you are less of a citizen for not wanting to fight a cause deemed "sound" or "just" by your government when you know in your heart and mind it is not. The world needs more people like you and I, those wanting to "fight the good fight". Peace out cousin to the south and have a great weekend.

    • I refuse to pay for the tax cuts of wealthy Americans or for their war. So I'll continue to avoid ever going to the US.

    • The US government really is just making Canadians help pay for their deficits; there is no other reason why they would add on the $5.50 for anything other than that. As if it wasn't bad enough that our own Prime Minister is starting to create a huge deficit himself, never mind possible screenings from the TSA when we do arrive via plane...

Sorry, I think I can handle not going to the US as long as they have this $5.50 fee. Besides, It's not like things are about to get any friendlier down there, anytime soon...

I could not have said it better myself. It's time to start a movement against traveling to the U.S. with their paranoia and gestapo personal screenings.Who wants to go on vacation and be treated like a criminal for spending our money in their country? Paying for their greed and corruption by alienating visitors is pure stupidity. With friends like this...

    • Canadians need to pay their burden of a global society . If you're a Kunuck and come here and enjoy our public roads, sidewalks and restrooms, you should pay a nominal fee for that enjoyment. As they say freedom isn't free. I applaud President Obama and his forward thinking on practical solutions to our budgetary concerns.

    • Debra_:

Yeah, that would be a good point if it wasn't for the fact that Canada and the US generally have a friendly relation to one another. That usually means that we have special privileges the rest of the world can't share, because we're one of the very few nations that actually tolerate, and are even friends with, the US (Considering how close to the border we are, though, even that doesn't feel like much of an option).

That includes the $5.50 we didn't have to pay before this legislation was introduced. The US has forgotten who their best friends are, and if they continue to forget, we can take our tourist money elsewhere. I hear the Caribbeans are nice this time of year...

I take offense to the term "Kunuck" in future replies please refrain from using this term as it denotes a personal attack on myself and the people of Canada. You will be reported if this occurs again on any of my topics of discussion.

    • This fee is paid by other countries & was paid by Canadians until 1997
when Canada, Mexico and Caribian countries were 'Exempted' from
      this ""passenger inspection fee."
You sound like the American right wing when they whine about Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy. Going back to what you had to pay during the Clinton years is not the outrage you make it out to be.

At $5.50, you are paying less to enter America than i have to pay at the GWB to enter NY.

That being said, i would have no problem with Canada remaining exempt from this "pasenger inspection fee". You are a good cousin, and you let us come to your counrty to hide from the draft, and if i get sick or hurt while i visit you my pockets are not picked by your healthcare system.

As far as this American Cousin is concerned you should keep the $5.50 and put it towards the traveling heath insurance package you have to buy while on vacation in America, cause if you have to call an ambulance while on your weekend visit here you will truely know what it feels like to have your pockets picked.

The $5.50 is a small amount but it's the principle behind it. Do you think citizens of other countries will enjoy paying this fee along with the paranoid TSA screening something just short of a anal probe? No, my money will stay in my wallet and go towards a vacation in another " friendly" country, a country who understands the meaning of "friend". A proud Canadian.

It's your free annual physical. As soon as a terrorist packs a bomb up their butt the TSA will include a colonoscopy as part of the search.

But other countries Have been paying this fee and Canada paid it without complaint before 1997. You have been Exempt from this fee for almost 15 years, unlike the other 99% of the world. Calling it a Tax to pick your pockets just reminded me of the tactics of my fellow countrymen concerning taxes going back to what they were under Clinton.
(i was not argueing that you should have to pay it)

You & I have jokingly (i thought) had some U.S. / Canadian beef. I am starting to think i was the only one joking. (my jokes will stop today)
PLEASE focus on the second half of my comment above where i say Canada has been a very good neighbor, and we should not charge them, as they are so good to visiting Americans.
