Illegal Immigration. Utah's Sensible Win Win Plan that we Can All Live With

The Utah Pilot Accountability Permit Program bill, backed by Democratic State Sen. Luz Robles and Republican State Rep. Jeremy Peterson, would allow illegal immigrants to work in the state, so long as they had a state-issued work permit. It would require them to undergo criminal background checks, take English classes and pay taxes. The workers would be forced to leave the state if they lost their jobs, and the state would report illegal immigrants who commit major crimes to federal immigration authorities.
The tax revenues from those workers would generate more than $11 million for Utah within six months and $20 million the following year, according to a fiscal note Robles presented yesterday, the Salt Lake Tribune reports. The fiscal note also estimates the state could generate an additional $18 million from charging immigrants for their work permit cards.
The legislation faces an uphill fight and would without doubt draw legal scrutiny, since regulating immigration falls within the purview of the federal government. Robles has said her bill would require a federal waiver to be enacted. However, she's confident it could survive constitutional challenges since Utah has had no problem issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, USA Today reports.http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20032906-503544.html

As for immigration this is a global event and the public circulation like plastic garbage shows up everywhere. When the extremes of Climate change, peak, then you will understand immigration. WARS, famine drives immigration, short life span, no way out economy. KARMA the black African through strife will reach the European shores, The White left home went to Africa created slaves killed for money, no different today, Slavery ruled commerce 400 years, black lash history sends immigrants. Immigration, in my time was called travelling, student exchange, meet your pen pal. I road a bicycle throughout Europe, with only one ID, drivers licence, cash only, no problems. Impossible now! I don't think the majority of countries would be ok with you just moving in without filing the correct paperwork and being approved first.
If Americans want to travel we have to get visas first, now we have to even have a visa to visit Mexico or Canada.

I live in Utah and I support this bill as well as the Sandstorm bill which would require police to verify immigration status during normal police interactions.
Federal law requires immigrants to carry their identification on them at all times, this is nothing new, we are just asking that our officers actually enforce the existing federal requirement.
I have no problems with law abiding immigrants, but Utah has had some serious issues with illegal immigrant related crimes, primarily concerning drugs. In the last year Utah confiscated a record amount of drugs totaling $3.8 million dollars worth, that's 10 times as much as recorded in 2007 (and only a small fraction of what's actually out there, tip of the iceberg if you will).
"The task force tells the paper the Mexican drug cartels fled Arizona because of strict new immigration laws there. It says while only 12 percent of those arrested were illegal immigrants, that 12 percent was responsible for 80 percent of the drugs seized. "
I've had several good friends who have been destroyed by meth and heroine, it's a big problem here and illegals are often the ones bringing it here in large quantities. Legal and law abiding immigrants are not the problem, it's the undocumented ones doing the dirty work that I want out of our state. As has been with the case in Arizona, the Cartels moved their business elsewhere, not because they kicked out ALL immigrants, but because they decided to crack down on the illegal ones.

I guess living in Mexico the past 20 years, raised two girls, opened a wellness center and Gym, 10 years Vallarta and now Cancun both sides of the nation. Mexicans do not want to be Americans. They want the opportunities, lifestyle and education, but to become a territory like Puerto Rico, NO WAY JOSE: look USA in Puerto Rico kicking, beating, jailing, students for expressing themselves- Obama says nothing.
Here is reality-
Over a million Jobs along the border went to Communist China- need for greed route, this left high unemployment both sides of the border. Historically drug use and abuse, alcohol, prescription drugs all go up same rate as unemployment. So like in Egypt-Bahrain, Libya, USA sells the weapons that kill the people, Mexico, Middle east Afghanistan, Africa South America American weapons of Mass destruction gives the power to kill the people. Among the Elite it is called Population control. I call it, Brown people killing brown people for White Man profits! - 1 year ago

Since Mexico (my own personal theory) seems to be a thorn in our sides, why don't we just go in and declare the country the State of Mexico, and once and for all stop this nonsense of the border, illegal immigrants, etc. By the way a requirement would be that English is taught in schools, (WE won't have to PRESS 1 for English any longer on our phones or at the ATM) and if the family wants to speak Spanish at home, so be it! We could then have free access to cleaning up our new state and get rid of all the bandits who roam the country terrorizing innocent people! Look at all the special agents that would be hired and countless new jobs created in law enforcement. They would be required to do everything we do, file taxes, etc.
Exactly why wouldn't this plan work, nothing else is working!
Maybe we can buy more stuff for the Dollar Stores from Mexico, since they would be our state, and "fire China" which is long overdue.
The above plan from Utah is a pipe dream......."required to leave if they lost their jobs?" These plans that politicians dream up and try to convince us they work, well they never work.
Frankly I am sick of politics. The Pittsburgh area is always discovering politicians that have abused their power, and we aren't alone! These Orie sisters are a prime example.

granted i empathize with the fear factor. but whats the worse that can happen if theyre caught? a free ticket home. a lot of americans work their asses off too so i can t really sympathize there. a pittance? hardly, at least compared to many americans who also work for minimum wage. many of the illegals make pretty good bank especially in agriculture, at $9.00-$12.00 and hour and up. never said they had it better but most certainly have it comparable to the average american. so should we give them a better deal? fuck no. equality? sure, if they can earn their keep legally. as ive said before we cant have a bunch of illegal immigrants running around undocumented doing as they please. no country allows such flagrant disregard to their laws. i still believe although not perfect, the utah bill is a good common sense approach in the right direction.

I could dig this if the "you're forced out of the state when you're fired" part was at the very least given a set time before it is enforced, or only enforced based on the nature of why he or she no longer has a job.

i agree. we should create something like a guest worker program which will allow us to document all illegal immigrants. allowing them to work, pay taxes and receive the same benefits that an american tax payer gets, such as unemployment benefits and social security. if they are not criminals and remain productive citizens then i would be for allowing them a legal status after a period of time

"The workers would be forced to leave the state if they lost their jobs"
I was on board until I saw that.
Total horseshit right there.
So what, your employer is now essentially your fucking dictator? Do what I say or I'll report you? Fuck that.

remanns makes a good counter argument, However, I would argue that it is not an organized labor bust per say in that mexican Imigrants could still organize on their own and put presure on the US companies that wish to hire them with that organization. Basicaly the other side to this story is that these businesses HAVE to have imigrant labor so that alone gives an organized imigrant work force leverage. Also the ultimatum that our imigration policy be all or nothing is absurd there are many countries that have successful revolving door imigration policies that alow for regular imigration for work that empowers and enriches both countries Austrailia and New Zealand is one I experiance for myself. any who thats my 2 pence.

no axe hombre. you are actually the one who sounded reasonable in your last comment. there is so much automatic divisiveness in the country that one might jump to the assumption that we have less in common than we do. all of us have opinions, many of them valid.obviously, in general you and i look at things from differing perspectives. and i am sure will continue to have heated debates and cutting comments toward each other in the future. but when i see comments or perspectives that make sense regardless to who makes them i will offer words of praise and or support. if i still smoked the reef i might have shared one with you sometime. peace

That plan is still basically an "organized labor" buster. A "shut up,....accept what I want to pay you,...or your out of here" deal. Another attempt to SINK the base pay of the average citizen laborer.
Against it.
Either OPEN the immigration floodgates,....or close them. NO "middle ground" designed to fuck the working man. We need to come to a consensus on immigration levels NOT dictated by the desires of the moneyed class for cheap disposable labor.

This looks like a very good start. Amazing how reasonable things can get when 2 opposing sides actually work together! It does seem to need a bit of tweaking though. As toyotabedzrock said, there does need to be some protection when someone loses a job through no fault of their own. And there should be something, as Roldan said, that would allow a path to citizenship.
Kudos to those lawmakers from Utah! (never thought I would say something like that! LOL)

Ok there needs to be more protection for the people who get fired. Like a time limit for unemployment so you don't just kick people out as soon as they are fired.
But it is a good start. This plus the dream act would be great.

The Wonk Room's Andrea Nill has an article titled, "Utah's Alternative To AZ Copycat Bill Would Generate Over $30 Million". It's a short read and worth the time.

I think it could work. This country was built on the backs of immigrants. Hey, at one point, we were ALL immigrants. I'm against people who come here to just access benefits from the system that they've never paid into. If you haven't put in, you can't take out. It's very simple. The Democrats use this as a way to pander to the "New arrivals".

wow carslut, welcome to the voice of reason getting voted down club. if some folks believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to sponge off the system without paying into it then those folks should be the ones taxed to allow for such unbridled sponging.

I'm surprised as well. Maybe these people are the ones that are on the receiving end of these entitlement/benefit programs? Spend and tax doesn't work. Somebody has to pay for that Democratic sympathy. If I ran my business like the Government ran theirs, I'd of been out of business 35 years ago. When you have to work for a living, I know, it's tough. I've worked hard all my life for what I've attained. But now the Government is freaking out because they've leveraged OUR future so far ahead, that there ISN'T any way it can be sustained. The tipping point of OVERTAXATION has been crossed. THAT is what we are REALLY seeing right now. And that is what the Democrats have done to ALL of us. Don't forget why the second amendment was put into the Constitution in first place. Just in case the Government got out of control....WE could take it back. As Thomas Jefferson put it..so well. "From time to time the tree of liberty needs to be watered with the blood of both patriots and tyrants". Maybe we need a government that we can afford. It's obvious that we CAN'T afford THIS pile of shit that we call "OUR GOVERNMENT".
