"Many women in the county were outraged by the commissioners’ statements. “It’s shocking in this day and age when life is difficult and challenging for so many families,” said Sue Oehmig, executive director of Hope Alive, a shelter that serves homeless women and children. “I would like them to say that to the hundreds of single women that call us every year asking for help.
I’m embarrassed for Frederick County. We’ve just been set back 20 years.” “The reality is that people are struggling to make ends meet with two incomes,” added former City of Frederick Mayor Jennifer Dougherty (D) “What does family and marriage have to do with the economy or creating jobs, which is what they ran on?”

Study after study has shown that children do NOT benefit from Head Start programs. It is simply another program designed to get a free babysitter for single women. It would serve us all better if these women were at home raising their kids rather than depending on, or expecting, someone else to do it. Most women, when their kids are in school (Head Start) are at home, living on assistance, chilling without having to deal with their kids, not working.

Exactly what year/century are these folks living in? Next will be the scarlet letter and branding with the cattle iron and don't forget slavery. Are these jokers for real and how many centuries backwards are they going to take this country before folks wake up and see the nonsense they are doing?

I wonder if these men of "compassion" know what fear smells like the third week of a long month when the lights are about to be turned off and there is only a box of Cheerios in the cupboard and a 5-pound block of food bank cheese in the freezer and the kids want dinner. Do they know anyone who has looked a former spouse, male and female, in the eye and seen that for them, child rearing and financial support seem to be an option rather than a duty? I raised my boy on my own and then married a single dad, who raised his kids too. Our lives were hard before and after our marriage. Today, we do whatever we can to help single parents, homeless folks, kids who need school supplies and shoes, and so on. And we figure it is the LEAST we could do, it does not make us saints at all. We are simply trying to fill in the gaps as a way of giving back to those who helped us at key times. I relied on government programs from Welfare to Food Stamps and Medicaid. Now I am an employed tax payer. It is such a lie that poverty programs breeds dependency. It is a hand up at a critical time and we should all be willing to do that. People, do not believe the lies our government is feeding you. Follow the money and see who benefits and who loses...poor people always lose.

Being a citizen of Maryland, I am very happy to be living in Howard County. Those of Frederick County have been let down, and shamed by this council. As a guy who ran for County Council in South Carolina, I would have never dreamed of talking to the issue of marriage.
Republicans are all about less Government intervention in our lives, yet they feel they can make decisions that would encourage family's to make certain decisions. Republicans don't care about budgets, fiscal responsibility, or the American people. Sadly, they care only about their diluted vision of what a, "Christian Nation" is. Unfortunately, they don't have the slightest clue what a Christian Nation would be like. They think that a Christian Nation is on that oppresses the people with Religious Doctrine, a Religious Doctrine that is impossible for any man to keep.
We are all sinners. Instead of trying to push secular punishment for sins against your personal morality, I suggest doing the Christian thing, and help your fellow brothers and sisters through the murky waters of life.

To the Republicans it has Never been about jobs and the economy, that was just a lie to get people to vote for them, it's about helping their Rich friends and their Fundamental Religious beliefs that they intend to impose on Everyone. And people think that only Muslim countries would do that, Hah!

Thats interesting. Sometimes what you hear isn't true. There is evidence through the Republican's actions that prove that they are not the slightest bit interested in growing our economy. Though Democrats are far from perfect, they have helped our nation's economic health tremendously.

I agree with this. The woman should be at home, at least part-time.
However, we also need some sort of dialogue in regards to if the hubby decides to leave. This can leave women in a vulnerable position.
I don't know the answers, but I do believe that women belong in the home.

When the poor are finally out of work, perhaps then they will revolt.
Perhaps 2012 marks the year when the oligarchy loses control of it's world domination scheme. - 1 year ago

People need to remember everything that's happened since the beginning of the year for 2012, it's the only way to ensure we don't have to go through it again.

Once again, the poor and powerless pay for the actions of the greedy and powerful. How long can this go on before the American people rise up en masse?
Why is this nation beginning to feel more and more like a Mormon enclave or Taliban-ruled regime?
Your wives stayed home you idiots, because they could. You are so blind to your own entitlements that you can't begin to fathom that women who flee oppressive marriages do not have the choices your college-educated wives had. What the hell tremendous sacrifices are you talking about? No vacations, no pool in the backyard, because I know you aren't talking about the woman I saw huddled in the steps of an Alexandria townhouse with her children for the night. You privileged white men have no clue how women and their children get to those places, and I bet the churches you go to don't either.
And I'm not discounting the homeless men either, but hey, maybe if the homeless men go find a homeless woman and marry her, everything will be all right, because by God we have to strengthen marriage in this country, that will fix everything.
Morons.
