    • The King and Queen of Thailand are not to be trifled with, certainly not on home turf...I was on Koh Tao in 1994, and even though many locals had a strong disliking for authority/the police, most would have a large picture of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and his wife in pride of place on the wall of their bar/restaurant/business,and anyone foolish enough to say or do anything disrespectful - well,I don't even wanna go there.
I read in a newspaper once that a prominent politician in Thailand was jailed merely for referring, very affectionately,to the King as "The Skipper" (he is known for his love of sailing). I don't think he was jailed for long, but it does show the power that the man possesses in his country. And it shows that he has no sense of humour whatsoever, sadly.

Not sure about that. Queen Elizabeth is one of the largest land owners on earth. Her responsibilities include appointing the new prime minister, she can dissolve parliament in any of the countries which she is head of state at no notice. Also it is to the queen that the armed forces hold their allegiance. How much of that is just ceremonial is an interestng question though
