"While promising to create a world-class education system, Gov. Rick Scott has simultaneously proposed the deepest cuts for Florida public schools by any governor in recent history.
In a worst-case scenario, they would lead to more than 20,000 layoffs of teachers and other personnel in the state's 67 school districts."
Any Current users who live in Florida? What can you tell us about this crazy Governor and his plans?

Republicans aren't fit/qualified to run our Government...They have been trying to abolish Public Education for decades..Once they destroy the public system, they will turn it over to their corporate contributors, for privatizing.. Florida has one of the worse Educational Systems in America, they need to be hiring teachers instead of laying teachers off..Republicans are using the economy as an excuse to dismantle many American institutions, for profit/political-gain..

Haven't read all the comments and I don't live in FL but I do read a LOT of news.
I know that he was CEO of an insurance company that got busted for defrauding Medicare out of Billions!
He paid a fine, stepped down as CEO WITH a 150 Million dollar golden parachute and the heavily medicated people in FL elected him Governor. Also read that he wants to move away from public eduction to "private" charter type schools and parents would get "vouchers" for their kids educations.
There have been some big scandals involving these private schools lately.
Apparently they get subsidy money from the government and these schools were inflating their enrollment counts and defrauding the government out of a lot of money. Something this governor was good at.....And he wants to push Medicaid people into private "managed care" programs......and I am going to guess that it will also somehow be subsidized by government funds.......so again.......another opportunity to "cook the books" and rob taxpayer money from the system.
In other words......he's just another wealthy republican crook taking care of his rich friends and their companies on the backs of the taxpayers.

Since the Boomers are aging and soon to be a "drain" on their profits they no longer need a work force here in the US of A. Nor do we need healthcare, social services, etc. Why are the tax cuts for the uberrich not on the table?

Even back in the times when the Roman empire was at it's might, teachers were well paid and respected. They understood that knowledge was one of the best investments they could make in the next generation's future.
Throughout history there are periods where the youth have been neglected and those that pass on skills ignored. This is surely unwise as a society needs a solid foundation. The disciplines of arts and crafts lead to an age of reason which was spearheaded by the youth. Human consciousness is at it's peak capacity for absorbing new ideas and acting quickly an accurately upon them while it is still young. Wisdom comes with experience but many become bogged down by old ideals that fail to include changes in the environment.
Change is the catalyst of evolution. Even rocks change. Adaptability has long been the skill that has given the human race an advantage. Knowledge is one of the key ingredients, lateral thinking another. These abilities blossom with freedom of thought. If we want to expand our horizons, find new ways to solve problems, then investing in education for all is one of the best ways to achieve. Information remains information without teachers who provide a context and structure so that their students can turn it into knowledge.
Teachers deserve our respect and encouragement, for they are the ones who help nurture the capacity to achieve new ideas and new possibilities in all of us.

Greetings everyone,
For the last few years now we have all heard the endless "debate" over public education, how are students are sub-par and how there are so many fat-cat teachers making huge salaries and not properly educating our children, I would like to throw in my proverbial two cents on the issue. As a person who formerly worked for the public education system, I can tell you beyond any shadow of doubt, that once again, through the use of mass manipulation, it is not a case of student "success" but a case where the social agenda of fundamentalist interest are not meeting the intended outcome of those which ultimately control the public school system, that is to say, over the past 30 years there has been one goal that has not been met, the end of the "public" school system as we know it.
As I have stated earlier, he who pays the piper calls the tune, the fact is, since "public" schools receive their funding on both a state and federal level, and we educate our children at the time when they are most impressionable (K. through 12) what it basically does come down to is that those who hold the purse strings simply want to produce consumers, as evidence of this, when I went to public school, we had a well-funded arts (which included plays, theater and field trips to places such as the Smithsonian Institution for example) which broadened their mind, expanded our interest of the world and the other people and cultures in it, and fostered independent critical thinking. Now by comparison, a public school K-12 is lucky if it has a theater at all, and a "field trip" might consist of going to your local Wal-Mart to see how "business" is done.
To put it bluntly and concisely, the only thing these market fundamentalist want, are complacent and compliant consumers, trained to be that way from the cradle to the grave, they do NOT want an educated populace, they do not want young adults with critical thinking skills, because if that were to happen, they might even realize that all this talk about, America being a democracy, would run counter to their own intelligent perception, that it is all a sham. At the same time, you'll notice that more often than not, the same schools which have no money for the aforementioned activities, both on a K-12 and college level, almost ALWAYS have money for the sports department, that is because one of the things that sports teaches and reinforces is group cohesion, us versus them, and while so many children and then eventually young adults put so much time, effort and energy into the "team" aesthetic (many also hoping to make it into the pros) they do not become well-informed and intelligent adults, capable of making well reasoned decisions as a voting citizen. Our children are often raised by television (I feel it is not necessary to explain the terrible implications of what that means) because quite often, both parents are working full time jobs and some even more, so there is no direction to look out for their future best interest, only an endless monologue, for consumption and self absorption. On the subject of public education concerning Germany's youth, Hitler said "We shall teach them how to count to 100, how to speak a few dozen sentences and physical fitness, as their primary function will be as soldiers" sound familiar? This of course includes the ultimate "dumbing down" of our children, the incorporation of religion as a prerequisite of obtaining federal funds, and instilling nationalism through reciting the idiotic Pledge of Allegiance as early as possible. That is the goal of every fundamentalist, so they install very well paid "administrative" staff to accomplish this, This is why fundamentalism, particularly religious fundamentalism, needs to be eliminated, because no matter how benign or unobtrusive it may appear, it always ALWAYS has an agenda, and this is what you're experiencing now. I am, and I remain, V

Love that Carlin bit, from his first album to his last HBO special - he never missed a beat, always on point and hilarious.
This is a little beside the point, but I go down to the Florida Gulf every year to fish. I decided while driving around to look for solar panels, on residences, office buildings, wherever. I never saw any! This is why - Florida Senator Martinez says "We have no availability for Solar" – Florida has no state tax for individuals (business - 5%), so to raise the money for conversion, would require property tax hikes, adding a state tax, or raising taxes elsewhere. So the "Sunshine State" burns coal.
But it wasn't always this way, in 2006 Florida had an immensely popular solar rebate program – so successful it exceeded it’s cap by 50M. So Obama gave them $31M in stimulus to honor the shortfall. Florida has decided not to honor the rebate program and no one knows why or where the money is going, except Charlie Crist I guess.
20,000 fewer teachers, no green tech progress BUT no state tax, by golly… a vision of Tea-Bag America in microcosm.

You're way off base on the sports comment. Colleges and school districts have been slashing sports. At the K-12 level many middle schools no longer have sports. At the high school level many have eliminated freshman teams and some have eliminated JV teams. In some states families have to pay a lot of money for their kids to play high school sports due to lack of funding.
As for eliminated religious fundamentalism, this statement is as offensive as it gets to go after a religion. You may not like a religion. But it doesn't mean the religion needs to be eliminated. What needs to be done is debate religious fundamentalism at the school district level.

Oh goody, let's make sure that there are future Generations of absolutely misinformed, uneducated people in Florida.
The problem here is that we have a State divided with willfully uneducated redneck wannabes, Geriatric Republicans who watch Glenn Beck on a 24hr basis, the apathetic middle and non-voting apathetic Democrats.
The rednecks vote Republican because they hate the President and are a'skeered that he wants to take their guns away. The old folks vote Republican because they worship Reagan, hate the President's skin color and have no idea what's really going in the world. They watch Fox (fake) news all day and live in a fantasy past they have created in their own minds. The middle are so confused they can't decide whether they want Democracy or chaos. Then there are the Democrats who are pissed that Obama didn't give them every single thing they expected, so, they sat on their asses and didn't bother to vote.
This is why Florida has a criminal idiot for a Governor.
I expect Scott to continue in his quest for stupidity.
Nothing he does surprises me.
The future of Florida means nothing to him.
He's rich. All that remains for his future is power.
Squash the ordinary people and he has more power.

Well, hold on a minute. Specific knowledge can be useful as can an overall understanding of how things work or don't work in changing things. In my experience as an activist, we have lost more than we've won, but we have saved a few rivers, a few creeks, stopped a few developments in environmentally sensitive areas and helped Native communities in this country and Canada. Knowing what "he said and she said" has definitely helped get the job done. We've changed the make up of town and village boards by getting our own people in to make better decisions and exposed crooks and liars. No doubt that now it looks rather hopeless but it's also a time for an awakening. It's going to take boots on the ground, or all we'll have left is philosophical discussion. All movements need their deep thinkers as well as people ready to get involved. All they need sometimes is a little encouragement.

Folks don't realize or won't accept that it's time to pay the fiddler for all the years we've lived above our means. We have what is called 'tenure' which means that no matter how bad a teacher is we can't fire her/him. We have public workers who can work for 20-25 years and draw a full pension for the next 40 years, paid for by the taxpayers, and the list goes on. All of us should have known that at some point we would certainly not be able to pay for all this. All states are struggling with their budgets. We're ALL going to have to bite the bullet at some point. We are a bunch of spoiled brats who want what we want and we WILL have it, even if we have to borrow to get it and make our kids and grandkids pay for it all. At some point the ridiculous greed has to stop. It's not the mean old Republicans. It's the folks who continue to want above the means.

I am not a Floridian, but I foresee this happening in other states soon.
I have a daughter who is a freshman and she's struggled with the education she's getting. It started towards the end of last year and has continued right into this year. It takes her very little effort to complete the work she's given and is then expected to entertain herself, she also complains about the attitudes teachers exhibit towards the students, not to mention the attitudes students have towards other students. She's leaning towards an online option that we have in our state. I don't blame her for being disenchanted with the whole thing. I think we all are.

It negativel affects our every daily interactions from the gas station attendant to our civil servants. The productive time lost due to mass ignorance is itself a drain on our economy. Thats how the GOP works though, take away from those who cannot defend themselves, to make up for the messes made by those who contribute the most to GOP campaigns. Im with you it is really really sad. But I think we need to really get more charter schools in more states, I went a charter school and had some of the most amazing teachers, and my school got about 70% of the money every other school got, they also have the highest paid teachers in the state, and its free to go to the school. If we had more of these kind of schools we could save millions, billions a year, and if we kept the schools smaller it would make parents and kids more willing to be invested in their school.

Charter schools are a mixed bag. Taking public money and giving it to private institutions has allowed for less accountability. I see the charter school model work well in small rural communities where the locals can and do seem more involved. BUT in poor urban communities children who are behind or have learning disabilities are shuffled into the public schools while the over achievers are creamed off the top making it seem like charter schools get better results for less money. Project Censored has done some wonderful research into this if you have further interest.

thats true but there are charter schools that cater to students who are behind, there are charter schools that are just for special needs children, there are charter schools for kids who are musically gifted, there could be a charter school for everyone if we had more people with more drive. For example here in North Idaho we have an all right public school system but for kids who are really bright and driven they get bored and lost in our public schools, so the need was seen and filled by our local charter which is designed for kids who need a hefty challenge. I started there in 8th grade and never in my life had I been so challenged by school work. I guess there is now one in the works designed for children with specific learning disability's, there was also one designed for kids who really excel at math and science but the voters decided we didn't really need that one, which to be honest we didn't becuase charter had already hired some of the best math and science teachers in the northwest. Seriously I had one teacher who worked for some secret military program in his off time, my freshman science teacher had like 4 doctorates, the man was amazing, my biology teacher was a bit of an oddball, he was too good for doctorates because he turned down 3 schools who wanted him to go through their doctoral programs, but damn the man knew his shit. And when I was done I failed his class, I took the final exam from the reg public school and aced it, damn fast too, the average for the test was about2 hours I took about 20 minutes. I can still tell you the Calvin cycle by heart. I can also recite by heart most of the process for replicating RNA and DNA, damn and that was like 4 years ago, im going to go google that and see if i still have it right.

Great comment! Was it the school or the teachers that make the difference? I would be interested in seeing how pay and benefits compare between public and charter in Idaho. I will try some searching myself.

This will have such a domino effect, Small business will then have to lay-off due to lack of sells. What I can't understand is why aren't the small business standing with the working men and women. I know they don't agree with the national Chamber of Commerce. Will follow up with data to support my statement.

I'm guessing one of the reasons is that most small businesses aren't unionize. And by small, I mean those businesses that employ less then 30 people.

America is such a grand place to live we give tax cuts to the top 2% and middle-class and the poor have to pay for those tax cuts.
America is such a wonderful place to live, that even I myself can't even afford to live in this so called rich but "we're broke" country.
America is such a grand place to live, that Republicans want to mandate and do a complete government takeover on a womens uterus while protecting the rapist or father that has raped a 12 year old girl who get's pregnant while forcing that 12 year old too bare that child.
America is such a wonderful place to live, that we give billions upon billions to other countries who set up universal health care for it's own citizens and yet Republicans tell it's own citizens "NO" you can't have access too affordable health care.
America is such a wonderful place to live, where guns are more important then having health care and teachers.
America is such a wonderful place to live, where bankers steal billions upon billions of dollars and then ask the government for a blank check while throwing people out of their homes.
America is such a wonderful place to live where Fox 'shitty' News wants to be the only state run, one voice outlet that speaks for the American people.
America is such a grand place to live that people actually elected and put into office a convicted felon like Rick Scott.

America is a wonderful place. Everyone is free to make their own way. I feel sorry for those who become slaves to unions and pay the price of losing their freedom. How much to the union leaders make from union dues. I'll bet they laugh all the way to the bank.

Really, mandating a womens uterus is called being free to you and working 70 hours a week with no rights is called being free???
No wonder why this country is in such disarray it's people like you and the Walker (_o_)'s who are messing up this country by taking away the rights of people.

What do teacher layoffs have to do with abortion? You'll have to fill me in. As for work, I often worked seventy hours a week. The first year I owned a company I did it for no pay. It's how I got ahead. If you don't like your job, change jobs. Don't wait for someone else to make it better for you.

Fl is a right to work state! A pure non union paradise with tens of thousands of uneducated, unemployed, and poor people! If you take a trip to a construction sites in Miami, stop and watch the workers pour out of the work site at lunch time or at the end of a shift! Two thirds if not more of the workers are illegal immigrants, none are licensed, and most can't speak a word of English! Its a joke! The contractors pay below minimum wage rates and don't pay any Federal taxes or State taxes. Its a Pathetic Sight! Right to Work is code for, the Right to Hire Illegal Workers without paying taxes or for as little as possible! So why is Fl. a welfare state? UNIONS did it! No, Obama did it! You pay cheap you can't complain!
Keep blaming the Unions for the failure of a right to work system if it make you feel better! But! Facts are facts pal! Someone paid for your education! Time to Pay your way! - 1 year ago

This is a situation of the law not being enforced. Illegals don't have a right to work. I believe companies caught hiring illegals should have their business license suspended long enough to feel financial pain.

Probably a cyber-spy for the Echelon code. Just kidding, he sounds like an Enron Ceo that cashed out early, and lives in a right to work state like Texas or Oklahoma. Their primary export is young men for the military, as there is no way to make a living any other way.

This is the beginning of the end of the Republican party as we know it. They're exceeding the rate at which people stupify. I said the same in 2008. I was wrong then too. I underestimated the stupidity of right-wing constituents... Enter the tea baggers.
