Four Americans taken from their yacht in the Indian Ocean by Somali pirates have been shot dead, the US military has said.
US naval forces on the way to try to rescue the Americans heard gunshots and on arrival found the four hostages had been killed.
Two pirates were killed and 15 detained during the incident, which took place on Monday.
The remains of two other pirates, who had been dead for some time, were found. The US military did not state how those two died. In total the US said 19 pirates were involved in the hijacking of the American's yacht, the Quest.
The deaths mark the first time US citizens have been killed in pirate attacks, which have plagued the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean for years.
The Quest was the home of Jean and Scott Adams, a couple from California who had been sailing around the world since December 2004. The two other Americans on board were Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle, of Seattle, Washington.
Rear admiral Charles Gaouette, deputy commander of the US navy's fifth fleet, said those aboard were part of a group that had set sail from the southern tip of India. It had apparently been bound for Oman.
The Adams's website documents their worldwide voyage. It includes trips to New Zealand, China, Cambodia and Panama.
The crew had joined a group of other yachts for the leg across the Indian Ocean for safety reasons.
Hostages are normally taken to Somalia and then negotiations begin over ransom money. The US navy had hoped to intercept the pirates and prevent them reaching the coast.
The US central command said that negotiations were under way with the pirates when the US forces heard gunfire, boarded the yacht and found the four American bodies.
"As they responded to the gunfire, reaching and boarding the Quest, the forces discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors," general James Mattis of US central command said in a statement.
"We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest," the statement added.
The military said US forces have been monitoring the Quest for about three days, since shortly after the pirate attack on Friday. Four navy warships were involved, including an aircraft carrier.
Two years ago, the US navy intercepted pirates who had attacked a US cargo ship, the Maersk Alabama, and rescued the captain, killing three pirates and arresting another.
Last week a Somali pirate was sentenced to 33 years in prison by a New York court for the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama, a US cargo vessel. That hijacking ended when US navy sharpshooters killed two pirates holding the ship's captain.

Sure it started understandably a bunch of fisherman pushed to piracy because there fish were stolen and killed by foreign toxic waste , but its clearly not about that anymore , if it was just about the money people would not need to get killed , now piracy itself is an industry attracting all types of individuals looking for a come up .
http://current.com/news/92507420_an-interview-with-somali-pirate-unraveling-the-...Its unfortunate what has happened to them but when they start killing innocent people , executing all onboard, what can justify that?
They are pirates right? let em walk the plank in the middle of the indian ocean seems fair in my opinon

Sounds like the crew of the American vessel put up some kind of fight... maybe that's why they wound up dead. Or perhaps they caught wind that the Navy had been sent after them?
Either way it doesnt really matter people are needlessly dead while others await execution. Sad story indeed.

Nonsense - they don't have the time to ponder over religious matters, they are simply trying to survive after we have emptied their sea of all its fish and dumped countless tons of our most toxic wastes in their sea and on their shores.

It's very sad when anyone is killed and nothing excuses the barbaric nature of these Somalis but, rich people seem to have no common sense. Sailing a multi-million dollar yacht near this part of the world full of Christian bibles. Really? Did you think God would protect you?
Well, now you're dead. Money sometimes makes people just stupid.

Why in the world did the shooters who retook the yacht let ANY of the pirates live? Should have killed every one of them. Why did it take three days and waiting until gunfire from the yacht for the Navy to act? I bet the answer lies in three words, rules of engagement. I wonder if the Navy commander on the scene of this one will take as much grief from his chain of command that the Maersk Alabama incident commander did.

This was not about the bible or islam, so try to keep that out of it. The pirate issue has been going on for many years now, and most people are staying away from that region because they know it is dangerous. The pirates have collected enough ransom to up their equipment and now they are going further out to sea to capture their victims. My condolences to all families involved. This however is not about religion and we should stop that fear mongering and hate spreading. The pirates are wrong, period.

vierotchka, I am not denying that there was a lot of wrong, but still it does not justify what they are doing now. There is no right in wrong, ever. Yes, initiatives to help Somalia should have been underway with more sincerity, after all it is survival that motivates these pirates. So we should focus on bringing aid to help them build an infrastructure. Right now there are just a few wealthy towns, the ones who live off the ransom fall out.

What is the US doing there you ask? What are international forces doing there then? They are protecting the thousands of cargo ships going back and forth carrying commercial goods. These crews on those cargo ships are all unarmed and multi national naval forces are protecting them. Another tax subsidy that the Waltons and others do not want to admit to. The piracy in that region has been going on for many many years, and without a political solution for Africa there won't be any changes soon. It is becoming a way of life for many now.
