Gaddafi Turns US and British Guns On His People

Vierotchka
Hamid Dabashi: Gaddafi gained power as anti-imperialist, made deal with Bush and pushed neo-liberal economics.

Born on June 15,1951 into a working class family in the south-western city of Ahvaz in the Khuzestan province of Iran, Hamid Dabashi received his early education in his hometown and his college education in Tehran, before he moved to the United States, where he received a dual Ph.D. in Sociology of Culture and Islamic Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Max Weber's theory of charismatic authority with Philip Rieff (1922-2006), the most distinguished Freudian cultural critic of his time. He is currently the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York, the oldest and most prestigious Chair in his field. He has also taught and delivered lectures in many North American, European, Arab and Iranian universities. His books include Close Up: Iranian Cinema, Past, Present, Future (2001), Iran: A People Interrupted (2007), and The Green Movement and the USA: The Fox and the Paradox (2010).

You don't need a "post history" to make it rise to the first page. What you need to do is to send the link to all your followers. The more followers you have, the more hits you will get, the more comments you will get, the more likely you are to get it to rise to the first page.

    • You can once again look to GW Bush for this. Yes, Gaddafi made in roads towards redemption but GW Bush should have insisted on Gaddafi taking more concrete steps toward democracy or a the very lest stop his human right abuses, when he lifted U.S. sanctions against Libya 2008. But he didn’t and now what should be a peaceful protest is being over run with violence and people being gunned down with American weapons. Yes, Gaddafi is to blame but if things had been handled correctly when sanctions were lifted, would we even be in this situation. Obama can’t be left out of this either(and I hate to dump any of this on him because he has a lot on his plate right now) because if he is continuing the same polices concerning Libya as Bush then this is partly his problem too.

    • Interesting that USIsrael is being fairly quiet on this, with Obama being completely silent as usual on things that really matter.

    • so pretty much exactly what's happening here. we spend too much money on defense and don't invest any of our money on our own people. you can shear a sheep a dozen times, but you can only skin it once.

I understand the US has sold weapons all over the world and to some very dubious leaders. My point is, so has any super or semi super power that mass produces weapons, including Russia.

We all knew about Egypt and tolerated it because of the Israeli conflict. Libya, on the other, hand has been the target of our military bombs that killed one of Gaddafi's sons years ago. Frankly this should be a giant wakeup call to Americans about how out of control our military complex has gotten. We are arming and training our enemies. THAT is fucking treason!

It was Reagan who bombed Libya in 1986, and killed Gaddafi's 15-month-old adopted daughter. No son of his was hurt or killed.

Edit: I was wrong - two of his sons were injured in that raid.

Yeah, but isn't the US the paragon of Justice and Democracy?

At least Russia, China, etc have never claimed to be the defenders & representatives of so lofty standards, so it's only logical that people demand of the US higher ethical standards at all levels, and this includes having an honest closer look on to whom it sells arms and on whom those armaments are used on (usually on students, the poor, protesters demanding justice and better living conditions, etcetera)

But I suspect the problem, again, is money.

Where there is money to be made and military and economical interests to be protected, then ethical, moral and humanitarian obligations and considerations take last place (if any place at all) on the list of priorities compiled in the boardrooms, war rooms and all the high places where the decisions are conceived and made.

Where in my post did I express sympathy with Gaddafi? I do however profoundly regret the brutal killing of an innocent toddler, which has nothing to do with my feelings about that insane tyrant.

As for Reagan bombing Libya, it was a very stupid thing to do and had not a single of the effects Reagan hoped for. Reagan had been hankering after making such a raid and used the terrorist attack in a disco in Germany (in which 2 American airmen died) to do so, claiming without any evidence that Gaddafi was behind that attack.
