Easton Byfield, 35, of Thayer Court, Oxford, did not show up in Central District Court today. His lawyer, Michael P. Murphy, filed a motion asking for the arraignment to be delayed.
Court records show Mr. Byfield's arraignment on charges of kidnapping, assault and battery, unarmed robbery and filing a false crime report was scheduled for tomorrow. His lawyer appeared in court today to request the continuance.
Mr. Murphy had no comment for the throng of reporters at court.
Detectives and members of the Alcohol Enforcement Unit continue to investigate the May 25, 2010, beating of a 25-year-old city man inside Platinum Premier at 241 Southbridge St.
Authorities want to see if the alleged attack and robbery of the patron is an isolated incident. Information also will be sent to the License Commission and representatives of the club will be brought before the commission at a later date for a hearing.
Video of the attack went viral on the Internet, popping up on many different websites. It shows an employee, identified by police as Mr. Byfield, bringing a patron into a bathroom.
The patron was ordered to empty his pockets, then was struck four times by Mr. Byfield, according to police. Another employee took video of the incident. Police received the video and information about the alleged attack last week. On Friday they arrested Mr. Byfield. He posted $7,540 cash bail after the arrest.
The four-and-a-half-minute video shows Mr. Byfield, listed in court records as 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 260 pounds, punching the patron then ordering him to his knees. The patron was told to recite, “Oh great (expletive) brown dude. Oh great (expletive) brown dude.”
Mr. Byfield alleged took $300 in cash from the patron before employees escorted him out of the club. The victim did not report the assault to police and feared for his safety, authorities said.
Mr. Byfield reported to police on the day of the alleged assault that he was actually attacked by the victim. That report is how police tracked down the patron shown in the video.

This probably happens more than is reported. Standard procedure for most bouncers.
You just need to select the right target for a shake-down. The type that would be too embarrassed to file a police report which would reveal that they were in a strip club, and too small to fight back, and cause an incident in which the police get involved. Pick your mark right and you make some good supplemental income. This bouncer did everything right, e.g. file a peremptory police report alleging he was the one assaulted.
He was just flat out retarded having another bouncer film the incident.

he could be selling drugs but that doesn't give a bouncer a right to beat up, rob and humiliate that guy.

I agree the Bouncer had no right to do that to this guy, but I am willing to bet he will NEVER sell ANYTHING in this club again.

this bouncer lied to the cops and told them that he was the one that was assaulted originally then this video came out. it's more likely that he was just shaking that guy down and probably not the first time either

Um, it looked like that bouncer knew he was being taped. Is he also the one that thought it would be a good idea to post it on the internet? He is an idiot.

This practice of video taping one as one commits a crime and then posting it on the internet is really a beautiful thing. These crimes used to go unprosecuted but now we have idiot confessions that are broadcast to the world.
