In less than 90 days, you will be "REQUIRED" by Federal Law to carry a "National ID" card.

Radical_Centrist
Even though no one on Capitol Hill is talking about it, unless it is stopped, the provisions of The Real ID Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-13, 119 Stat 392), through the Department of Homeland Security, will require the federalization of State-issued driver's licenses by May 11, 2011.

This is the type of card the Nazi's and the communists in the Soviet Union made people carry.

The new cards, disguised as a uniform drivers' license, will be biometric. Each card will store up to a gigabyte of personal data about the card holder AND will contain a GPS tracking chip---so that means the government will know where you are at all times.

No one is talking about this... and certainly, this is something the Obama administration would like to keep quiet.

Barack Obama's America is quickly becoming Nazi Germany. Did you ever think you would experience invasive, Big Brother tactics in which uniformed officers ask: "Let me see your papers?"

I "KNOW" Barack Obama doesn't care what the U.S. Constitution says. SO WE HAVE TO CARE, AND WE HAVE TO STOP HIM.

If this battle is not waged---and won---by May 11, 2011, the American people will be carrying a federal ID card that will double as a State-issued drivers' license. You will need it to vote. You will need it to enter a federal building. You will need it to buy a plane ticket. And, believe it or not, you will need it if you are stopped while jogging in the park or sitting on your front porch. Oh, yes... and because it will be your drivers' license as well, you will need it to drive your car.

You may be wondering how in the world we could have allowed this to happen. We "allowed it" to happen because we were more concerned about terrorists than civil liberties. Congress passed the Real ID Act on May 11, 2005, creating a mandatory national standard for State-issued drivers' licenses, making the data points identical on all cards. REAL ID requires State driver's license authorities to use more stringent measures to verify Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, proof of citizenship and immigration status. The act prescribes 18 SEPARATE SECURITY CONTROLS that States are now required to use when issuing driver's licenses.

Before a REAL ID can be issued, the applicant must provide the following documentation:

1. A photo ID that includes his or her full legal name and birth date
2. Documentation of birth date (i.e., your birth certificate)
3. Documentation of legal status and Social Security number
4. Third party documentation showing name and place of residence.

"Among the 2008 presidential candidates, according to a February 2008 CNet report at news.com, John McCain strongly supported the Real ID Act, Barack Obama and Ron Paul flatly opposed it, while Hillary Clinton called for the law to be reviewed.[24] In a September 2007 interview Mike Huckabee expressed opposition to the Real ID Act, calling the Real ID Act "a huge mistake".

Your link directly opposes your statements, if you bother to read it.
This act has been lurking for years, only got passed because it got piggybacked on a military bill, and isn't going into effect in may, as most states involved with it have already requested........you guessed it, more extensions.

      Old story.
Something current would be nice, as your website's name implies.

    • For warned is for armed. Even if it is stalled, a few more slave class protests like in Michigan and it will be back up and running. The satanic elite *Bilderburg group, look it up* They pick the 2 candidates (Dem and Rep), so no matter who the people/sheeple vote for, the elite win- so pointing fingers at each other's party and saying it was their pres. who made the bill, is silly since they are all run by the same people. Until Americans can see past the smoke and mirrors of the corporate media, and the propaganda machine they will never be able to take back America, which has been hijacked by crooks, criminals and the corrupt. There should be a mandatory yearly lie detector test given to all those who want to serve in public/government office with a few simple questions asked, For example "Have you or any members of your staff, made a law, bill, regulation, back room deal, etc that has infringed or taken away any Americans rights, liberties or freedoms, and have any of those deals harmed human health or the environment?" If they fail, they don't serve.

    • This article above is a crock of crap, written by an anti-Obama idiot of very limited intelligence. ALL of the tightened security in this country including The Real ID Act of 2005, and the most privacy threatening act ever, The Patriot Act, were all actually created by the BUSH administration following the 9/11 events.

All you have to do is look at the dates of when these things were instituted to realize they all were created 5 to 7 years before Obama even took office.

      Idiots.

All these clueless apathetic fence sitters are in denial. As if the police state could be chalked up to the "democrats or republicans". News flash! There's no difference.

Thanks for writing this. Forget about these government pay-rolled propaganda agents.. There are 85 corporate government contracts out for "perception management" just for the internet alone..

(If you are posting in opposition to this article because you think you object to its content and are not being paid to do so. It might be an indication that you are under the spell of government propaganda and should take a good hard, serious look at the world around you.)

    • Not only is this story old - its false. The card in question is being mulled over by EVERY first-world nation. And it work first began during a certain REPUBLICAN's turn at the presidential wheel.

With that out of the way - the technology was not deemed possible for State IDS and they don't have a way to pay for it if it was. The last time it was discussed the Bush administration commissioned the technology to be explored for Passports. Again, this is also going on in virtually every "free state" you can think of.

Well, no, not really. Washington state's EDL stores your DL number and nothing more - there's no power for anything more as it's an E-field card. So in this case "all your data" is basically a 12 digit number. 200 yards would be pushing it and would require all sort of caveats - a purpose built reader, no other cards in the field etc. For the most part, you can get 20-30 feet pretty easily, which fits the design goal of reading them as you drive past a checkpoint at the Canadian border.

Your passport and CC use h-field parts, not distance readable. PASS is distance readable, but is not a passport. You occasionally see clueless journalists conflating the two.

    • Not that I'm really hot on REAL ID, but the 'article' here is full of bovine excremental data.

"This is the type of card the Nazi's and the communists in the Soviet Union made people carry."

This isn't an internal passport - it's more of a minimum standard for state ID. The kicker here is the national storage of data. The Feds really shouldn't have open access to it, if they want that they should have to get a warrant to get it from the state.

"The new cards, disguised as a uniform drivers' license, will be biometric. Each card will store up to a gigabyte of personal data about the card holder AND will contain a GPS tracking chip---so that means the government will know where you are at all times"

Wow, that doesn't make much sense, does it? First, I don't see any requirements for biometric data. Not that they couldn't do so, it just doesn't seem to require it, other than a photo - maybe you could call that biometric with a big stretch.

Next, what would be the point of "storing up to a gigabyte of data" on the card? That's the sort of boogey-man urban legend junk you generally see attached to the tiresome "Mark O'Beast" chain emails. There would NEVER be any reason to store a lot of data on card, for oh so many reasons. One, it's a precept in database design that you don't store data redundantly like that - it tends to all get out of sync. Why have it there to start with? All you need is a unique index into a central database - which is exactly what's going to happen. Putting the user's data on a card you can't access, update, or secure would be nuts from the gubmint's POV. It does sound all eeeeevil and spooky though, even if it makes no sense at all.

Third, hate to tell you, there IS no "GPS chip", in the sense that there exists some component which allows the user to be "tracked by satellite!!". That's not how GPS works, sorry. GPS satellites provide excruciatingly accurate time data. Given that, and the satellite ephemeris, you can calculate your position from the observed time-of-flight of the satellite signals. The receiver knows its position from the satellite data, not the other way around. Not to mention a dozen other issues with this trope - GPS is relatively power intensive due to the frequency involved and the number of calculations required. You'd need a battery and an antenna. Not to mention its overall pointlessness - any device interrogating your putative REAL ID card knows where it's at anyway - having the card also know is sort of like having a gigabyte of data on the card - totally pointless.

At any rate, the larger objection to REAL might be its unconstitutionality, the questionable need for yet another central database of data on private citizens, and the bureaucracy needed to support and maintain it. If someone needs an ID for a nuke plant or whatnot, make an adhoc ID for that (or use the already existing government DL). REAL has no real need to exist.

    • 1) "This is the type of card the Nazi's and the communists in the Soviet Union made people carry."

How so? Not really elaborating on that point. So they both insisted that localities verify identity before issuing ID? This is pretty much akin to saying that Nazis and Communists breathed oxygen, so perhaps we should stop.

      2) Gig of data, biometric, GPS.

All lies anyway. Source, please? Right-wing lunatic chain mails don't count, by the way. Anything in the bill about it? Or are we supposed to believe that this sourceless e-mail written by someone who doesn't realize that 2005 was before 2008 has the REAL truth, and the actual bill that was passed is just a smokescreen?

      3) Obama references.

Bush signed it into law, passed by a Republican Congress. Presidents can't retroactively negate laws - if you'd read the Constitution (the one you "KNOW" Obama doesn't care about) you'd know that's not something the Executive branch does.

      4) Federal ID card

No, it's Federal guidelines for what documentation states are required to request when issuing the exact same licenses that they issue now.

Just more of the same from right-wing lunatics. Bush does something, Obama gets blamed, and if you point out the hypocrisy then they just get whiny. Try facts next time, and perhaps you'll get a better response.

That being said, the only real topic of debate here should be: Does the federal government have the authority to determine what documents states should issue for licensing. Personally, I come down on the 'no' side of that. But by the same token, it seems like the federal government should have the ability to determine who is and isn't allowed on their property and what sorts of documents are valid for that purpose. That makes it tricky. How do you run a federal courthouse if the state you're in doesn't meet the federal minimums for documentation? It's a complex issue that requires debate. Morons mucking it up with imaginary points doesn't help anything.

Charles Key speaking straight out about the Real ID Act of 2005, the use of biometrics for identification, and related issues at the National Press Club. Mark Lerner is known for bringing the ACLU and ACLJ together to fight side-by-side against the Real ID; both national organizations are normally on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to issues, so to bring them together in agreement against anything, well this is a significant first! The problem is not if your doing wrong but inthe hands of tyrants ...certain people could and would be singled out ...this data base system already exists... lets assume that Hitlers great grandson were somehow president and he decided that all people with brown eyes should be exterminated ..then this database/RFID chips would be a very bad thing! Ron Paul...the New Andrew Jackson!? maybe...but it is not up to the politicians it is up to us all of us ...its not about rioting in the streets( this is what the sentral imtellijents Agency.(Misspelled intentionally) sponsors in countries they wish to exploit) They form riots then marshal law then all your rights are taken away indefinitely. the answer is one of peace ...stop spending money!!! thats all you have to do ...stop driving around stop buying the newest cell phone and by all means stop buying their genetically altered food!
The problem is if your money is on a chip then they dont have to even print the paper...More thin air!! so currency goes from having value to having no value to just a notion of value. please see "the addendum" www. zeitgeistmovie.com

    • I actually think the Real ID act solves many problems and in itself does not create any problems, and the creator of this video is just blowing conspiracy theory smoke. It consolidates information already possessed by states into a national database. This stops the problem of drivers with suspended or revoked licenses for major traffic offenses from merely going to the next state and getting a license. With the rise of the Internet, this is not as much of a problem as it was in the past, but the process would be streamlined, save the states money, and actually give less people access to your personal information. Furthermore, for ID cards not to be machine readable would be incompatible with modern, technological times. Also, this would mean less people would see your personal information. Instead of some stranger checking your ID and seeing all your info, when you buy alcohol, say, a machine could just scan it and all the person would see is a green light.

On the same topic, this video would have you believe that this cards have to have an RFID chip in them. This is not the case. The only requirement is that they must be machine readable, which could be as simple as a bar-code or magnetic strip. "Each card must include, at a minimum, the person's full legal name, signature, date of birth, gender, driver's license or identification card number" Nothing about retinal scan, fingerprints or any other items the video claims the ID card must have.

Lastly, a person already needs a drivers license (or state ID) to live already, so nothing new there. A person, at least in my state, has to present the same information for a DL as would be required for a National ID, nothing new here either.

Its clear you don't give a rats ass who started it by the way you add. "I "KNOW" Barack Obama doesn't care" or "Obama administration would like to keep it quiet" and don't forget "Barack Obama's America is quickly becoming Nazi Germany".
But if you would like to see something fixed you will need to pick a side to support your voice. That way Obama would stop flip flopping like a dead fish looking for his voters. Or you can keep trying to do it your way but just blame yourself that "Radical Centrist America is quickly becoming Nazi Germany".

You can bet the Republican controlled House of Representatives won't stop it as it is a Republican sponsored bill passed by the Republican controlled House and Senate and signed into law by the Republican Bush on May 11, 2005.

you think the way is what make a new side that will work for you voice? great plan but just what do we do for the next 30 years it take for that movement to take hold?
Obama flip flops for votes yes but if he didn't think he needed more votes for term two he would of stayed the course.

I am fully aware that MOST Republicans like MOST Democrats in Congress are about as worthless as Tits on a Chicken. I am sure if you added up every member of both houses of Congress worth two cents you would be hard pressed to come up with six or seven people.
