Push on to get northern Michigan as industrial hemp producer

A few years ago, Hillman resident Everett Swift had a mini stroke. His doctors recommended Lipitor to help him decrease his cholesterol, but Swift said he wanted to avoid the numerous side effects, such as headaches, muscle and joint pain and unexplained weakness. Instead, Swift integrated hemp seed, high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, into his diet, and his most recent cholesterol test showed his numbers were improving.

Swift said the seeds he uses for salads can be found at health food stores or larger stores like Walmart, and he uses dressing made of products from the same plant when he can afford it, he said. But because products made of parts of the hemp plant have to be imported, they can be pricey.

"We can import the fiber in this country, but we can't grow it," Swift said.
