Over 100,000 Rally For Wisconsin - Video In Comments

Image

On a snowy Wisconsin Saturday over 100,000 union members, working families, community members, faith leaders, activist groups and concerned citizens gathered in Madison to tell Gov. Walker to stop the attacks on the middle class and kill the bill.

Despite the weather today’s rally was the biggest in the thirteen days of protests. The people of Wisconsin will continue to fight for their rights. It is time for our elected officials to show leadership, come to the table and move Wisconsin forward.

Wisconsin's teachers, nurses, snow plow drivers, and other public employees have agreed to Walker’s pension and health care concessions, which he said would solve the budget challenge. The Governor’s continued attacks on our state’s working families harm us all. It is now up to the Governor to be reasonable and listen to his constituents.

The whole nation has taken notice of what we are doing in Wisconsin. Today solidarity rallies were held in all fifty states, as America stands with Wisconsin.

What's happened in our state has made the whole labor movement stronger. None of this would have been possible without the support, dedication and solidarity of both union members and non-union members who understand more than they have in a long time just how much we're all in this together.

There is so much to see and do in New Zealand that many travellers choose to take motorhome self drive tours of the areas that they want to see, whether that be the North or South Island. These parks offer them the places to stop, rest up and enjoy a meal whilst still being able to enjoy creature comforts and have a good time. Caravan parks in New Zealand often have playgrounds, BBQ's, patios and a variety of other features and amenities that travellers can enjoy. If you want to enjoy a great 'kiwi' holiday, caravan parks are the place to be.

    • We have a crack in the wall, one of the republican senators has announced he will not support the union busting bill as written. Additionally the police have chose not to remove the protesters from the capital building.
The people are speaking and are being heard.

    • I was there, the street were filled all around the capitol and down the connecting streets. A turn out like this with the temperatures of 15 F and snow.
There were no counter demonstrators, the teabaggers do not like iced tea I guess, no it was too cold for them poor babies.
There was no violence very peaceful except for the chanting, "WHATS DISGUSTING UNION BUSTING", "THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE".
I talked to a lot of cops that were there and all said that is was very peaceful and respectful. They also acknowledged that Walker was coming after their union next and supported the protest. I will return this week as well.

Head up, Figg! You are right to be angry, and justified to be battle weary. While it's a steep mountain, the fact that there was a protest in 50 states on Saturday, is a monumental first "NATIONAL" statement of protest! Your work has not been in vain!

I will email MoveOn and suggest that they promote a perpetual protest at every capitol until we reform government. The people are aroused, becoming aware and are growing in the belief that they can force corrective changes in government.

We have to keep on, keeping on. If it were easy, it would have been accomplished long ago. Without us, how will our children and grandchildren know that they are entitled to more that we are experiencing now. How will they know that they have bequeathed the promise of liberty and freedom? You simply don't realize how effective your efforts have been. If I had not come upon people like yourself on this site, I would not have joined the effort of others here. Consider, if ANON is communicating with those in effort on this site, then efforts like yours must be having an effect!

That's exactly how I felt last year when the media were covering TP rallies with more reporters than protestors. Or reported mama grizzly book signings where 50 people showed up like it was national news. At the same time they were silent when more than 15,000 in Illinois demanded that taxes be raised. Or when free health clinics were put on and 1500- 2000 desparate hard working Americans showed up needing medical attention, not even local newspapers covered the events.
The media has been right wing for too long and now any media which doesn't spew the cons propaganda is labeled as the "liberal" media.

The most effective response to censorship is, and has always been, massive and targeted boycotting. Print media is already breathing its' last gasps, and network television isn't far behind, and they know it. If they can't sell their product, sooner or later, they will not be able to finance their empire or their censorship. I don't care what the billionaires want, they cannot accomplish their goals without the blind participation of those they seek to silence and enslave.

    • This, my friends and fellow defendants, is no longer a state issue. This, is a response to decades of neglect and abuse, by a government besieged with, and addicted to, influence money. This, my FELLOW AMERICANS, is our starting call to our job of doing what every generation before us has had to do, our job of reclaiming and reinforcing the rights, liberties and guarantees, promised to us by the Constitution of The United States. Every generation is responsible for maintaining and renewing it's legacy and promise. Let's each do our part, for the benefit of every generation who has kept the flame alive before us, for ourselves and for the generations who come after us. If we don't keep the flame alive for ourselves, future generations will never have the opportunity to pass it on to their children. It's up to us.

To me , it is a global issue . The very few , have dominated the destiny of the very , very many , for too long . They do a rotten job too . What happens to one affects all the rest . If it were transparent , we would see . Even if we cannot see it , we feel it , in our hearts . I believe we can permanently correct the situation and return balance to the world .

I just wanted to tell you while we disagree on almost everything I do appreciate your ability to articulate your views. Actually we do agree on a lot. We both want people to prosper, we want those who need some help getting back on track to get there and we want to help those who can't help themselves. Where we disagree is how to get it done.

Out of intellectual curiosity I attended the MoveOn rally in front of the statehouse where I was this weekend. I'd guess there were 750-1000 people in attendance. I was surprised there was very little union support outside the teacher's unions. The only visible outside support came from the Socialist Party and the Worker Party.

I heard the usual rhetoric I expected. The crowd was more subdued than I expected, They only made noise when prompted. The event lasted about ninety minutes. There were only a couple of Koch signs. There was only one FOX sign. The Kochs and FOX were not mentioned by any speaker. They kept denounced right wing corporate influences without any more specifics. Walker and one local radio show host were the only "demogogues" mentioned.

Thank you W.M. And I empathize with you.

It impresses me favorably that as many people are turning out everywhere as are, despite the fact that there is no clear local leadership in all areas, and that there is no clearly defined broader agenda. Don't you think that this is a mighty "baby step"?

This suggests to me that people are indeed dissatisfied; while not being informed of all the facts and figures that contribute to the causes of their dissatisfaction, and are willing to actively participate in addressing the issues of their dissatisfaction. Considering that there has never been, and probably never will be, across the spectrum agreement on looming problems, their causes and their possible solutions, it is little wonder that the general public has not been able to get behind any remedies. So much false information, disinformation and spin, is bound to forestall any overcoming of collective inertia.

In fact, I believe that small and medium size businesses have not been given a fair shake in the market place. Big business has been afforded competitive advantages by paid for legislation, I believe. In my estimation, it is not socially beneficial to state sponsor the formation of super sized international companies, which force individual enterprise out of the marketplace.

It is also my opinion that the Republican party platform has more recently evolved to include some very nonconservative positions. Take the environment as one example. As there are farmers in my extended family, I was brought up understanding sustainable agricultural principles. Every farmer knows that they can only take so much from the land before they must put something back into it, to renourish it. Otherwise, the land will stop producing. Simple acts like crop rotation can help in this task. But, it seems to me that giant corporations have taken, taken and taken from this country and it's people, without contributing back to it. For G.E. to virtually pay no taxes of consequence, relative to it's gross trade volume and profit, is both predatory and parasitic, in my opinion. When it comes to the country and the people, I do believe in the "pay to play" concept. But big business has been paying a mini fraction of what it should, while paying more to our legislators than to the National Treasury. This is not a; (by it's definition of cautious, prudent, responsible), a conservative act. It does not promote the long term health of the base from which it has derived it's prosperity. This single dynamic is the base issue of most of my political view. It's not about morality, it's about sensibility and practicality.

I expected more teachers to be in attendance. This is their issue. I expected more support from other unions. It was virtually nonexistent. I chatted with an SEIU member standing next to me during the rally. He was disappointed with the lack of support from other unions.

Is this weekend a baby step? It depends how you're looking at it. A majority of people are not supportive of unions in general. I'm not being specific to this issue. The polls on the current situation could change day to day. But there are union people out there doing things to hurt the unions cause. There's news film of physical attacks and threats of physical harm. It's always a union person on the offensive. There's religious and race prejudice occuring. It's all on news film. One could argue the Tea Party did the same thing but very little was on video. The mantra from the left was "trust us, it's happening. There's an accumulation of video of union people threatening or physically assaulting others. This is the stereotype the typical non union person has of unions. I realize it's a very minute fraction of the protestors. But its reflects poorly on unions.

Is it a baby step? The Boston Globe didn't report the rally in the Sunday Paper. There isn't a left wing cause the Globe doesn't jump all over. (Their poll had Scott Brown down 15 points the day before the election when every other poll showed him ahead. Their columnists rip Brown every week even though he's the most popular politician in the state) I'm sure there was tv news coverage. But I didn't notice one camera person or reporter. They could have been where I couldn't see them. I didn't watch the tv news Saturday night (rarely watch anyway). I would have watched had I been home. I'm sure the local Fox news was there. They have an statehouse office on the corner of the rally. No one was protesting against Fox (it's the local news). The right wing Herald had a small article buried in the paper. The coverage was nonpartisan news. They reported MoveOn held a rally in support of Wisconsin teachers with several hundred in attendance.

    • The question every Republican should be asking themselves is, do you really believe that 100,000 people could be bused in while it's snowing?

And consider that other cities had rallies, and Madison is not on the state border.

I expected a massive teacher's union turnout. It wasn't there. Thirty minutes before the rally there were fifty people on the sidewalk. I figure many of them were doing the set up. Half the crowd wasn't there for the first half of the ninety minute rally. What does it say a person (me) who disagrees was more interested in hearing what was being said than those with something at stake? I got there thirty minutes early because I figured it was necessary to be close enough to hear anything.

** Now I'm going to play the other side. Do not confuse the following with my politics ** If I were a tenured teacher I would have made sure every teacher in my school district was aware of the protests. I would have told them it could be our state next. I would have told them nothing short of important family business should get in the way of being there. I would have told the younger teachers I once stood up for what they have. Now it's time for them do do it for themselves and the next generation.
