> Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has called public unions "the privileged elite" during a speech in Ohio...
> Considered a potential 2012 presidential contender, Daniels stressed he wasn't making a stump speech. His comments about public employee unions got strong applause.
One of the most powerful men in the country, speaking to a group of Republican donors who probably paid thousands of dollars for a seat at the fundraiser, calls public employees unions the "privileged elite." And is applauded for it. It's almost as absurd as when Dan Quayle, the pampered Vice President from one of America's wealthiest families, gave speeches about the "cultural elite" and the "media elite" -- never mind that his family made their fortune owning newspapers.
Everyone is apparently an elite -- except those who actually are.

while i agree with the "absurdity" of what "the right" does...
does not your post here also constitute an "us vs. them" situation as you label everyone on the "right" and claim they label (what I assume you're included in because of your beliefs) as elite?
why don't we stop trying to keep score about who's wrong and right and just worry about who's fucking up this country or who's helping it.
and that in itself is an opportunity to say "they're ruining it" which again, I tend to agree with, but it's not always "them" and also, "they" could have good ideas too.
we need to stop trying to gain points in some stupid made up fight-- for what? what's the trophy?

It seems to me that you have answered part of your question, with your other questions and statements.
While I grant you, that many on the far right don't truly know all that they are endorsing, and facilitating, which is implicit in your assertions, they none the less are participants in the actions and results perpetrated by the extreme activist right. Elite is a word I strive to avoid, because it is so subjective, and always dependent upon subject and context. In fact, I believe that most republicans don't understand what their party is and what it represents. It certainly is no longer conservative, by definitions other than political ideology. But the power sources of the "Republican force"; which screen themselves behind numerous splinter ideas and philosophy, thus obscuring the ultimate ulterior objective of those powers, are today, inextricably the warp of the party's weft. As such, we can only refer to them as a group, unless specifically identified as the corporate/republican, activist extreme right; which I often refer to.
I have recognized very few commenters herein who are keeping score for score's sake, alone. Most commenters herein, recognize the issues for what they individually are, but also recognize them as a part of a greater whole, an effort to entirely dominate; and ultimately supplant, government, for the explicit purpose of exploiting the people and the country. It is the collective perception of most commenters herein, that it is corporate America's; as characterized by their cooperation with the Republican party, effort to dominate and exploit the people and the country, for their own exclusive benefit, that both created and continue to perpetuate the national crisis that we are experiencing.
It's not about score keeping; as we have no billions to add up. It's about recreating a country and a government of the people, for the people and by the people! At the time this concept was penned, the constitution did not consider corporations to be people!

your last bit, what it's "about" is exactly what I was trying to get at.
i meant between us regular folk. obviously politicians and people with power (be it financial, religious, political) will try to keep a divide, they'll try and ration out the flocks so they have a group to lead. but amongst regular people why do we need to point fingers and classify each other as "us" or "them"
that's my point. we're all americans who should want the greater good of the country. not, "fuck you muslim. or abortion is wrong, bible says so, hence, you're evil. or i want to keep my tax dollars and not give it away to socialism you latte drinking bleeding heart."
-to which we retaliate with, "go read about your imaginary old man in the sky. or stop having guns redneck. or you don't like the prez cus he's black. or you inbred uneducated idiot."subscribing to the idea of "elite" and the "rest of us" is stupid and counterproductive for this country. since, as you agree, there's no trophy in sight. and since we see the problem with people bringing up the "elitism" discussion we don't have to give it credence by making "look what THOSE people are saying about 'elitist' (which we know are really just smart, liberal minded people like us) they're SO stupid and they should be ridiculed."
that's what it seems like to me.

Gotcha now, and concur! You are right, it will help the conversation if we remember that we are all people underneath. In fact, I view the legislators who have been betraying us, as having largely been victimized into their actions by corrupting circumstances and conditions. Those who empower it all, with their money, are victims of their own human frailty, manifesting as greed. Will they hang on to their traditional ways all the way down, like monkeys do when they put they're hands into a jar to grasp something, and won't unclench their fists which prevents them from removing their hand from the jar, and therefore get caught by jar trappers? Possibly, in the same way that Qadaffi swears that he will die a martyr.
In the case of the corporate/ republican activist right, it is their actions, which are monstrously predatory and parasitic, that are being attacked. The Koch bros. have put themselves out there in a way to be personally identified for crimes against the people, in ways that even greater money has not. If you recall the Mellon-Scaife attack on Bill Clinton, that represents merely the tip of the iceberg of old Pittsburgh money that is allied with Koch Bros. interests in exploiting the people and the country, while promoting the corporate takeover of the world. In some ways, this silent money is more insidious because it's difficult to organize a public response to it's machinations.

Uhh Huhh! And it's the same demagoguery when they project their accusations of class warfare onto others. And it's the same demagoguery when they accuse us of taking advantage of the system and being a dependent drain on the economy, while they are the parasitic bunch that has been sucking on the blood of the public. And it's the same demagoguery when they accuse those who strive to improve the conditions of the common person, and of the country, of threatening the freedom and liberty of the individual, while they conspire to enslave the American public with a thousand threads of restrictive legislation, the giving away of our money in tax loopholes and corporate subsidies, attempts to deny the right of collective bargaining, authorizing the intrusion into our most private forms of communication and a plethora of other insidious schemes to oppress the common person. And, it's high time that the people let the demagogues know that we're on to them, and that we know who the threat to individual freedom and liberty is, and who the parasite upon society is, and who has been stealing our money, AND, that WE, are coming after it!

I find it amazing that those of us who are called elites work our asses off and pay our taxes with no argument. The ones who piss and moan about every little dollar they have to contribute to the working of our country, the ones who do everything to send their wealth outside the country to avoid paying said taxes, the ones who live in mansions and fly in private jets and step on the backs of those who work for them somehow are "the average American Joe who is just like you". I'm sorry, I've heard of a skewed perception of things, but this is ridiculous.

Newspeak at work - - -
[ Newspeak - The official language of Oceania. Newspeak is "politically correct" speech taken to its maximum extent. Newspeak is based on standard English, but all words describing "unorthodox" political ideas have been removed. In addition, there was an attempt to remove the overall number of words in general, to limit the range of ideas that could be expressed.
The most important aim of newspeak was to provide a means of speaking that required no thought what-so-ever. It uses abbreviations or clipped conjunctions in order to mask or alter a word's true meaning. For example, words such as Miniluv and joycamp, allow the speaker to speak without actually being force to think about what they were talking about.. or at least, not as much as if they were required to use complete phrases such as "Ministry of Love" or "Forced Labor Camp". These words just roll right off the lips before the speaker can even contemplate what he is really saying.
Reducing the number of words also removes any literary value to writing, because there would only be one distinct way to present any particular concept. It would be impossible to write a book like Common Sense , Uncle Tom's Cabin, or even 1984 in Newspeak. Not only would the correct words for certain concepts not be available, but a lack of adjectives would cause the writing would be completely bland and unemotional, which in itself would keep people from reading at all.
Here is the official definition from the Merriam-Webster dictionary:
new•speak ('nü-"spEk, 'nyü-), noun, Usage: often capitalized. : propagandistic language marked by euphemism, circumlocution, and the inversion of customary meanings. Etymology: Newspeak, a language "designed to diminish the range of thought," in the novel 1984 (1949) by George Orwell. Date: 1950 ] - 1 year ago
