I know. I just don't get it. I am friends with a lady who work with a gay couple and they are as Right Wing as it gets and I just don't get how anyone could support a group who go out of their way to show their hatred to you.

In a two party system people just have to pick which side has more of there interests at heart and choose , there are a lot of gay people out there that don't see gay marriage as a important issue for them.

I have often found that the ones screaming anti-gay sentiments the loudest have a whole lot wrong going on in their own lives.

The surface facts may be infotainment. But is the principle of those who are the perpetrators of wrongful actions, also those most likely to be leading the cause against those actions, infotainment? This reminds me of the Koch public cry which I just read herein.

I agree that there's obviously something seriously wrong with people who're bigoted anti-gay, but I disagree completely with the idea that it's their religion than TURNS them that way.
If you go down that road then it's just as easy to justify idea of certain activities "turning" people gay- like acting or liking ballet or something.

It's far more logical to suggest that people who ALREADY feel a certain way are drawn to activities and ways of life where they feel more comfortable, can find like-minded people and support.

That is a good point. My original comment is worded poorly. I don't think that religion turns people into pedophiles, as in their sexual preference is manufactured by their belief system. I was just trying to say that some religious interpretations give people more incentive to prey on innocent children because they feel ashamed about themselves and they don't want to see themselves through the eyes of another adult.

I am merely speculating. I think it may be possible that if one's mind is not twisted by such religious beliefs, then one might not have felt the shame that made them prey on children in the first place. Sorry, I guess I'm not really talking about pedophiles, but people who resort to preying on children because of some shame they feel about themselves. It's more about control than it is about sex -- kind of like rape. This idea is probably not relevant to this particular story though.

I don't understand. If a religion is bigoted why are the members of that religion not impacted by and to be held accountable for that bigotry. To me the point of this miscreants story is that under the guise of religion he made moral judgement about sexual orientation when his own sexual orientation is an abomination. Was the religion responsible for his orientation - no; is the religion responsible for him being its spokesperson - yes.

I went to a church once as a guest and my dad went with me. He pointed out that the pastor's wife was sitting on the front row and his mistress was on the second. He knew that because he had seen this pastor out with the woman on the second row. Needless to say, he didn't want to shake dad's hand on the way out. I've seen churches elect certain members, usually ones with deep pockets, to lead church groups and they are the worst of the worst for cheating or hitting their wives or any number of things. It's about money. It is about stroking the ego of the person who can contribute the most money. There is a huge church near where I live, James River (some call it Six Flags Over Jesus), that when you join they ply you with steak dinners and so forth to get an idea of what you have. Then, they start moving you around in the church where you can benefit them the most. If you are found to have money, you teach a class (Brad Pitt's poor brother was put front and center to shake hands along with the pastor to put on a good image), or become part of the inner circle. If you don't have a lot of money, you get sent to the nursery to watch everyone else's kid or you get to help park cars or any other sort of "volunteer" thing. It is both entertaining and disgusting to see this hierarchy going on in a church building. This would be the same church where my husband and I found out that a woman couldn't make her electric bill, so when it came time for offering, we turned around and gave her the money to do so instead of putting it in the plate. We got hauled in an office and "talked to" about that practice. Apparantly we were not equipped with enough brains to know that "the church can handle this and they will determine who gets what". Um, okay. But they just built a huge building with a coffee bar and gaming room for teens. They have ATM's in the lobby. They have their own fitness center (so that men and women can meet like-minded Christians). It's a farce. It would be funny if it weren't so damn sad.
