According to the report's source, officers with the OMNI Drug Task Force executed a search warrant on the home of Rudy Simpson in June 2008, and found a small bag of marijuana and half a pain pill that he'd been prescribed.
While talking about what they should do, officers began to eye the expensive recording equipment around Simpson's home, ultimately deciding that they could very well take everything if they wanted thanks to the drugs they'd found.
What they didn't realize is that when they raided the home, Simpson and friends were in the middle of a recording session, and the microphones were live.
"Basically what I heard them talking about is what equipment, what materialistic stuff could they take out of my house," he told the ABC affiliate. "It seems like...that they were just trying to figure out what they could come out of here with."
After the incident, Simpson said prosecutors played hardball and even threatened to prosecute him for the medicine he'd been legally prescribed. He forfeited some property and spent time in a half-way home, according to the report.
Simpson also claimed officers were eating his food, and that they stole a gold ring.
Police ended up leaving Simpson's home that day in 2008 with "a 52” flat screen TV, a DVD player, two computers, a camera and a bunch of DVDs," reporter Scott Lewis wrote.
Now, two of the officers involved -- Lt. Luke Davis and Lt. Emmanuel Riopelle -- are facing "dozens" of charges. Both have been accused in a long-running scheme to steal from drug suspects and profit from sales of their property.
In spite of the incident, drug task forces across the nation continue to operate with secret budgets and the backing of laws that permit wanton seizure of property if drugs are discovered.

Did he say Police and Prosecutors get to KEEP what they seize?
So if you live in Michigan and some cop likes your car they can just come seize it and anything else they like........without even probable cause?
That's just SICK! I feel for the people of Michigan.
Time to RECALL a few of these SOB's and fire the cops who are on the take. - 1 year ago

In the late 70 and early 80's I had a lot of friends that were Cops (Narc), their unmarked cars were always full of drugs. I once saw a Cops pick up truck full of something in the back covered with a bed sheet, I thought it was pine straw or something. The Cop lifted the sheet and I got a surprise, it was their Pot. They worked together and all of them were making a lot of extra money. They did finally get caught. I have never trusted the Police after seeing what they were doing. The Police are under payed and it is hard to keep them honest.

How far we have come in 40 plus years?
http://www.newsahead.com/preview/2009/07/14/united-states-14-jul-2009-nixon-war-...
UNITED STATES 14 Jul 2009 Nixon war on drugs 40 years agoPresident Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs on 14 Jul 1969 in a message to Congress. It became the War on Drugs in Jun 1971. Hundreds of billions of dollars and 40 years later, drug consumption and profits are booming. In these desperate economic times in the United States, Washington could see better use for the billions of dollars spent on the drugs war and argue that it is not working.
Nixon pushed through the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Since then fortunes have been built both legally and illegally on drugs. The prohibition, interdiction and incarceration industries can be expected to take aim if budget cutter approach the War on Drugs.
It costs the United States almost US $200 billion a year, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Include alcohol and tobacco-related costs along with health care, criminal justice and lost productivity and the figure exceeds US $500 billion annually. The Office of National Drug Control Policy notes that over US $19 billion was spent on the war on drugs by the federal government in 2003 alone.

In the dark ages , people (wealthy widows) were accused of witchcraft , all their property got taken by the church . War on drugs is the modern equivalent of the inquisition . Without public burnings . Just obscene length of incarceration.

So your saying that because this guy had $35 dollars worth of pot, the cops have the right to take away his stuff with no probable cause, you know the constitution doesn't just consist of the second amendment, illegal search and SEIZURE! And im not really sure how hearsay that there was a pot stem in his garbage, to justify a warrant!

Those cops sounded very Republican to me. /snark
Michigan does have a bad history for seizing property without probable cause. A very good friend of mine had his car taken away from him in the Detroit area when he got stopped for running a stop sign; he had no priors and no drugs were found in the car. The reason why they took his car was that they found a half joint in his ashtray and trying to get his car back took 6 months and thousands of dollars. He put in a job transfer, got the transfer and moved out.

Yet another good reason to legalize drugs. Why empower corrupt cops along with those who would break the law to profit from the import and sale of drugs?
I'd think the pretense of civility making drugs illegal is outweighed by the corruption and obvious enrichment (and therefore inducement) of those who would and do break the law.
This begs the question, are the unintended consequences of creating an extremely lucrative black market worse for society than the freedom to use the drugs themselves?

By policing Judges and politicians. Corruption always starts at the top. By allowing corporations and rich CEOs to fleece the people without being held to the same standards, the impression is giving that laws only matter if you get caught. Once there are multiple police involved in this type of law breaking, the justifications come quicker and easier.
I am sure, if the money trail is properly followed, prosecutors and judges will be involved. I would start to look directly at those people who benefits the most from the money generated by selling off confiscated property.

The sheriff of Nottingham (DEA) told his cronies (cops) it was ok so it has to be ok right? meanwhile the lords and ladies of the house and our elected kingship focus on the problem that really matters. What to do with all the money they got from the Church (Corporations). Meanwhile young Robin hood is no where to be found because they put him in jail for a joint the size of a tooth pick.
