Texas Immigration Bill has BIG Exception

Image
Avior
So they make this bill, it's tough, it will give you a $10,000 fine and 2 years in prison if you willingly hire and illegal. Well unless your rich and hire an illegal gardener, maid or other houseworker.

    • Texas has the most screwed up legislature in the country, Its unbelievable they would have the audacity to consider such a move, to facilitate the services of the wealthy while everyone else gets the fine and legal bills

    • Hypocrisy - come on, say it with me. The rich can do what ever they want and us phelbians have to play by another set of rules. I call it Bullshit. Tyson and all those meat manufacturers should have to follow the law, put Americans back to work, it's not like it won't break the bank.

    • HOLY SHIT! What is this?? Did they ban "Animal Farm" in Texas, too?! To paraphrase: all illegal immigrants are equal, but some illegal immigrants are more equal than others...so they can stay. Is that the idea behind this law? Oy!

I would hardly consider maids and landscapers corporations. I'll guess the exception is considering there aren't enough replacements in these areas where many illegals are employed. If there aren't Americans to do the job give these people work visas. Make it legal for them to be here. Make their employers file appropriate paperwork and pay appropriate taxes. Make the workers pay taxes. No under the table stuff.

    • From the article:

"Texans shouldn't be punished for hiring lawn care companies who hire unauthorized immigrants, he said, according to the Texas Tribune's website."

Hahaha, that wouldn't be a violation anyway.....the company that hired them would be at fault. What they want to do is to still make it legal for well-off Americans to exploit illegal immigrants for labor around their houses......and everybody knows it.

Somehow I doubt that "a large segment of the Texas population [would be] in prison" if that exception wasn't in there. More like an extremely small group at the tip tippy top of the economic food-chain (that also happens to write most of the legislation in the state) that wants to protect their own asses.

If we're going to make a law requiring people who want to hire check citizenship statuses, it should apply to everyone equally.

1 ) I am absolutely in favor of checking citizenship status
2 ) that being said,.....it should apply to ABSOLUTELY everyone,.....( in an "employment" context,.......have sex with whomever, whatever, wherever, however,...you want,....as long as no currency is exchanged. Fuck the prostitutes ??? - well,....covered under "whatever" )

    • If I hire 50 people to landscape my house, and possibly do some assembly work in my basement, is that ok?

How can a state that hates illegals so much have so many employed on an individual level? Must make it hard to bitch about illegals when they are cleaning your kitchen, pool, and yard in such close proximity. Conjures up images of the good old days when people would talk in front of their servants and slaves like they were furniture.

      You nailed the hypocrisy !!!!!

They want them as tenants for their disheveled rental properties and to work for below minimum wage around their plantation house without any protection if they are mistreated for fear of deportation and replacement only.

Years ago I was considering homes in two developments being built by two different developers. I asked for a clause in the contract stating if illegals were knowingly used in building my house I would get a certain amount discounted from the purchase. After they choked they smiled and politely declined.

Really pleasant guys, always laughing. Any time I said El Camino, then seemed to be amused by it.
They did such a great job, I recommend a friend of mine to them, he's got a NoVa.

    • Like my Mommy always said,"Just because all your friends are doing it, it doesn't make it right!"
You cannot have it both ways. It's either legal or illegal. Just because they're doing your laundry and not picking your crops should not make a difference. This shows the arrogance and self-centered nature of these lawmakers proposing immigration 'reform'. Crack down hard and heartlessly, but not in a way it hurts them personally.
I live where most of the illegal labor force are from the Dominican Republic or Haiti and our situation does not seem to be the emotional Dynamite it appears to be on the continent, so I'm writing with a somewhat puzzled outlook.
Either way, this bill, with such an obvious and self serving exception, seems to epitomize the whole issue. Americans want cheap labor and food, but don't want the accompanying foreigners.
From what I've read, it's an issue that crosses the aisles of political exigency and philosophy. From where I'm viewing the situation, I can't grasp the emotions the issue engenders. I would appreciate any thoughtful comments that would help me understand more fully.

    • i'm ok with this bill-- hypocrisy aside, which i hate on principle.

business shouldn't get away with screwing americans out of jobs, so don't hire illegals-- fine, great.

but you don't have to be rich to hire a gardner. you can pay someone 50 bucks (or maybe less) a week, depending on the work to mow your lawn. maids would cost a little more, but regardless everyone can do it. personally the cash exchanged in that transaction doesn't matter enough to affect us (with taxes or lack of income for someone else)

illegals work so hard because they get shit pay, so eh, i don't feel like they're stealing jobs in that instance, and i don't feel like the customer is pulling one over on the economy.

if you hired a maid service, or a landscape company with illegal employees, a licensed company that pays taxes and charges a fair price-- then that's fucked up because they obviously wouldn't pay that fair wage to the employee. but a grown mexican man taking a job mowing a lawn (30 minuted job for most) for 40 bucks is no different than a 13 year old neighbor mowing your lawn-- do we harass suburban white kids for not reporting their income?

That argument is completely valid. However,....most "yard crews" ( at least in Texas ), ARE owned by white men who tote around illegal labor as though they were low cost yard machines,.....to such a prevalent overwhelming extent, that there virtually ARE NO well payed native landscapers anymore. And that is by no means the only trade for which this sort of thing is the case.

Unmanaged "illegal" ( wink wink, nudge nudge ) labor is strangling the semi-skilled trades,....and the wage reduction travels up the food chain to the skilled trades. Been there, done that .

then that's shame about Texas. what you said is exactly what i'm against, it's a shame.
I was just saying in terms of what this bill seems to say (of course 'say' and 'do' don't always seem to match) then it could be a harmless/good thing.

but if too many rules are bent and too many loopholes and too many assholes trying to game the system, then it's all for not and we clearly have a problem.

my only reference of this is Los Angeles, where you have legit companies and then thousands of illegals with their own equipment going around in a truck working for cash... so i thought this would be as effective as it could sound.

    • This can't be legal? How can someone legally hire people who are here illegally? That's like saying it's legal to hire a thief who you know has an arrest warrant out on him. Is that like harboring a fugitive? This makes no sense even by Texan standards. Additionally, how can you then claim it's still illegal for another part of the population? This law allows Texans to conveniently skirt the federal minimum wage requirements, social security contributions, unemployment taxes etc. Can't wait until the ACLU gets hold of this one.

Rich & Connected Texan: "Hey there, Debbie. This bill that's coming up. We have a problem with it. With all of the illegal immigrants I've hired on, I don't want to run afoul of the law; I need the maids and gardeners. How about you get an exception in their for us. We did help get you into office, and we can certainly help you again in the future."

More bourgeois good-ol-boy arrogance, this IS NOT an obstacle. ---

[ "When it comes to household employees or yard workers it is extremely common for Texans to hire people who are likely undocumented workers," Pena said. "It is so common it is overlooked." ]
