From Sec. 3101.01 of the bill, via Towleroad.com: “A marriage may only be entered into by one man and one woman. Any marriage between persons of the same sex is against the strong public policy of this state. Any marriage between persons of the same sex shall have no legal force or effect in this state and, if attempted to be entered into in this state, is void ab initio and shall not be recognized by this state. The recognition or extension by the state of the specific statutory benefits of a legal marriage to non-marital relationships between persons of the same sex or different sexes is against the strong public policy of this state. Any public act, record or judicial proceeding of this state, as defined in section 9.82 of the Revised Code, that extends the specific statutory benefits of legal marriage to non-marital relationships between persons of the same sex or different sexes is void.”
Ohio has already banned marriage equality, which Think Progress’ Zaid Jilani says makes this language “either redundant and spiteful or aimed at preventing the recognition of equal benefits to same-sex couples by means other than marriage.”

So two negatives make a positvie. Now gay marriage is legal in Ohio!! How insecure do you have to be to hide this inside another bill when it is already law?

Republicans are making less sense than usual. Since when does "less, smaller government" mean writing a law, especially a BAD LAW, twice? I can only speculate (and WILDLY SO!) that they're anticipating legal challenges and two separate writings require two separate legal challenges. If one gets defeated, the other keeps a form of the law on the books.
I don't know. Trying to make sense out of Republicans is impossible.

Thank you for the comment. I live in Ohio and find it hard to believe this is happening. I have three members of my family that are teachers. They are rightfully worried. I am upset that Gov. Kasick could replace two Republicans that were against him with two that are with him.I'm sure their are Republicans effected by this bill also. I hope in 2012 they all remember what has happened and show up at the polls. We need to keep President Obama.

OK Who has a link for to sign a petition to reset our government back to just the initial few pieces of paper! I will happily sign my name as large as John Hancocks! Time to go back to just the three key documents "Immancipation Proclomation" "Constitution" and "Bill of Rights", wipe all other legislation from the books and get back to never passing laws without PROPER representation of the people will!

TP people have never read the Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence with any understanding of what the words say. Governments are established by the governed to protect their rights, not abuse them or take them away.
The second paragraph of the Declaration states "That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing the powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness".
Further, it states: "that Mankind are more disposed to suffer while the Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security".
Government is instituted to protect the rights of the governed, not to strip them away. The RIPublicans, Tea Party and Libertarians, only want to protect what they consider to be their rights and all others be damned.

Wow. I thought my state was bad! This is what happens when a state turns the majority of it's elected officials and the political process over to tea party backed lunatics. Once again, this further exposes the "small government" and "stay out of my life federal government" hypocracy. They are just fine with using the government to control groups they don't agree with. Just "don't tread on my rights." This is Orwell's "Animal Farm" come to life. Leave it to the tea party to have their own "Napoleon."

1. Protect the Constitution
2. Reject Cap and Trade

6. End Runaway Government Spending
7. Defund, Repeal, and Replace Government-run Health Care

What's even more depressing is that many of the people who put the Republicans back in charge are pretty pleased with themselves. (I got into a "discussion" with a gal at work today who spent 2 years as a contractor in the Summit Country Child Services Dept. -- she was outraged that the office workers were even allowed to be in a union even though she reluctantly admitted that they were paid less than people doing the same job in the private sector!) As an Ohioan since 1970, I share your shame and disgust.

Sorry Warren, I like most of what you have to say but this is sublime ingorance.
They have thier ten commandments just like the Christian religions, and we have seen how well those have been followed over the centuries. The Tea Party is equally guilty as anyone else for instigating these latest waves of "Crusades, Inquisitions, and Witch Hunts".

I disagree. Since fiscal conservatism is a right wing objective there will be some of the far right in the Tea Party. But there are plenty of people who are fiscal conservatives who have nothing to do with the far right. I'm a fiscal conservative. But I keep the far right at arms length. Just so someone doesn't put pieces together incorrectly I'm not a Tea Party member. Ironically the only non candidate political rally I've ever attended is MoveOn last weekend. I did walk through the middle of a Legalize Pot rally in the park once. Those people smell good.

ROFL Yes, yes we do smell good, but thats irrelevant, but the Tea Party is just as culpable for the current issues with fear mongering, scapegoatism, and bigotry as anyone else in the country, they seem to be following thier tenents as well as supposedely religious "God Fearing" folk...
I hate that term BTW, "God Fearing", not much of a benevolent god if you need to fear him/her/it.

these type of humans are losing their freaking minds - it's quite entertaining to watch in a macabre way - i'm MOST grateful that i've removed myself to quite an extent from being in the midst of modernized civilization - still, the things they do are SO WRONG - it could be disheartening, especially since i've been trying to give a shit and be more compassionate - it would be much easier if i just don't care ... *sigh* stupid human tricks

She also mentioned, kind of offhandedly, that Ohio did away with its corporate income tax several years ago. I couldn't believe my ears because that hasn't been mentioned at all in the local media. I did some research today and, sure enough, Ohio did phase out corporate income taxes starting in 2005 (when Republicans were running things) and replaced it with a Corporate Activity Tax. The rate is .26 and puts us as the 45th highest corporate taxing state. But, yeah, let's stick it to our public employees to make up the budget deficit. Next on the agenda, start privatizing things like our turnpike and our prison system. Hand over assets paid for by Ohio taxpayers to private companies for fun and profit. And all the right-wing sheeple here just wag their fluffy little tails and baah contentedly. PAH.

As if this union-busting bill in Ohio weren't despicable enough--we find out they've slipped in an even more despicable spoiler (based on their religious views of marriage). We find, on a daily basis, the people who claimed their unconditional love for the Constitution, actually is conditional. We find that the Constitution that they professed such a deep adoration of, was merely a fiction of their own imaginations, and more closely resembles the manifesto of some unpopular dictator of a Theocracy.

Just because 'christians' say marriage is between a man and woman does not mean anything! This country was founded on secular ideas and guess what not everyone thinks like a Christian like some of you small minded conservatives believe so why don't you just stay out of peoples personal lives and do something that your good at like going to church every Sunday and thinking you are 'closer to god' than everyone else!

I see your publicized, concocted celebrity marriages and raise you Michael and Paul whom have been together for 42 years. Just so this sinks in: they were living together here in the deep south while going to movies, shopping for groceries, and going to church as a couple since 1969. Tell me why they should not have the right to get married.
