Yet Another Waste of Stimulus Money

There is a proposed project called "Atlanta Streetcar" that is being funded by the newly created Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grants signed into law by President Obama. The project is scheduled to break ground sometime this summer.

While there is great need for transportation development in the Atlanta area (just drive on I-285 during rush hour), the proposed line only serves to connect the tourist spots of Atlanta via a closed loop contained in the downtown district. (Who chooses Atlanta as a vacation spot anyway?) This proposal neglects the numerous citizen that actually live in the surrounding neighborhoods while also continuing the major issue of the downtown district already. After the workday, the downtown area becomes a ghost town since there are very limited spaces to live due to the fact that this is where the major corporations offices are located. So this poses the question of what will become of the tourist streetcar after the museums and parks are closed. Exactly what happens to the downtown district: shuts down.

Instead of this ridiculous closed loop, why not begin to recreate the trolley lines that use to connect all of the surrounding neighborhoods in the early 1900's. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcars_in_Atlanta) Grant it, the automobile is going to be hard for our American society to give up, but providing a reliable streetcar system that has once proved to be successful would ease the transition because lord knows that MARTA is completely useless.

Come on Atlanta. Get your head screwed on right.
