A science- free Congress? Climate scientists speak out

Image
JanforGore
To our dismay, and the nation’s detriment, self-described climate change deniers – strongly supported by fossil-fuel interests — continue to mislead Congress and the public.

In late January, we joined 14 other leading scientists in writing a letter to every member of Congress, asking our elected representatives to separate science from policy. We called attention to the overwhelming scientific evidence of climate change, urging Congress to “address the challenge of climate change, and lead the national response…” We want Congress to understand that, with each passing day, the problem worsens.

Our letter was certainly not the first plea to Congress to address climate change, and it won’t be the last. An open letter just last May from 255 members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences urged similar actions. But the race to run away from the problem is nothing short of staggering.

Nothing exemplifies this more than a bill by House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman, Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), to overturn the scientific finding by the Environmental Protection Agency that greenhouse gases are harmful to human health.

We are saddened and disturbed that Upton is apparently planning to hold a vote in committee very soon to overturn a science-based determination absent any scientific justification for doing so.

This science-free approach serves only the interests of oil and coal producers and other big polluters who don’t want Congress — or the American people — to know what decades of scientific research have revealed about current climate trends and the growing future risks we face.

Science is the Achilles heel for those who try to perpetuate the myth that climate change is not occurring, or that the massive build-up of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere is not the main reason the climate is changing. There is no serious disagreement in the scientific community that global temperatures are increasing, sea levels are rising, the oceans are becoming more acidic and that fossil fuel combustion is the primary cause.

In addition, the rapid shrinking of Arctic sea ice and the pattern of extreme weather and climate — including widespread drought, extraordinarily intense rainstorms, heat waves and wildfires — reflect more than just natural climate variability.

    • Heck, there are plenty of congressmen who think the Earth is 6,000 years old, and all of humanity came from Adam and Eve in a garden.

Of course to them science is witchcraft.

    • Don't add your own opinion about the science communities not paying much attention to this when there are so much research on climate change. You might as well say, "why give a fuck about our planet, lets let it rot in pollution but hey at least our economy is good ..for now"

    • Warming" is the inexorable increase in potential energy residing in the atmosphere. It's caused by an increase in the mass and volume of compounds known to trap thermal energy before it can dissipate (radiate off) into the Cosmos. We label such compounds "greenhouse gases", and often point to Venus' super-hot atmosphere as an example of what happens when "greenhouse gases" run amok. Do note that term: "potential energy". The correct syntax defining what it is, and what this "potential" actually is, isn't a linguistic construct. It is a set of complex polynomial equations that most Americans (Sen. Imhof especially) couldn't identify (let alone read) if their lives depended on it. A single page-full of these, long strings of equations exploring the relationships between constants and variables, would be bad enough. But one usually encounters great blocks of them, page-after-page-after-page after-page; where the beef is; what makes the subject inaccessible. So it's much easier for Sen. Imhof to simply say "balderdash!" and dismiss it out of hand as so much hokus-pokus (or some kind of infernal conspiracy) instead of going back to graduate school to study advanced mathematics and physics for the next ten years; why we're stuck with this debate -- because we say "warming".

"Warming" has nothing to do with the temperature in -- say, Dallas, Texas two weeks before the Super Bowl. The atmosphere retains more potential energy, and because it does it is more dynamic. More energy is available to push air masses around the planet. So, in the case of Dallas before the Super Bowl, a bubble of frigid air that covered the middle of Siberia got shoved over the North Pole, twisted like a pretzel and catapulted down to Texas so quickly that it snowed (not because it was frigid, but because it hit a bubble of warm, moist air moving north from the Gulf of Mexico). The energy that could shove so much frigid air out of Siberia originated in the mid-ocean tropics on the other side of the world. It was an eruption from the humid sub-tropical zones named the "Tropic of Cancer" and "Tropic of Capricorn" on maps. Thanks to the increased potential energy these so-called "Tropics" are now larger in area, more saturated with water vapor, bulge higher into the stratosphere and expand/contract with greater force than before. Essentially, they act like bellows; what happened here.

The role that carbon (soot), waste gases (mainly, combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide and dioxide), water vapor, methane and a host of so-called "ODS's" (Ozone Depleting Substances) play in this atmospheric cycle (or loop) between the tropics and the poles is so well established that one wonders what Sen. Inhofe thinks he can accomplish through partisan legislation. It brings to mind Robert Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621), to whom it fell to persecute Gallileo for advocating "Heliocentrism", the idea that the Earth orbits the Sun and not the other way around. Heliocentrism was considered heresy by many because it conflicted with the reigning political (Catholic) doctrine of the day and challenged the political order of Feudal society, much as "Global Warming" conflicts with the reigning neo-capitalist post-industrial (Republican) ideology in ours; essentially, what Sen. Imhofe is about, and we have here.

What pisses me off most is that we gluttonous, scientifically-illiterate American voters are screwing it up for the rest of the planet.
China recently surpassed U.S. as the #1 source of greenhouses gasses (because of our demand for cheap labor and cheap crap). But per capita the United States has always lead the world in pollution. Only now we export it to other countries to do our slave labor and suffer the poisoning of our toxic lifestyle.
Does it make me a terrorist to say I am deeply disgusted with my country?

I urge to review this site
      Support Revolution 2.0
      http://www.osixs.org/Rev2_menu_intro.aspx

      Overview:
Welcome to the beginning of the second American revolution.
The purpose is to educate and to move the United States and the rest of the world forward. We all know that something is terribly wrong with our country but we don't have a clue what to do about it. But we do know we cannot continue to sit around and do nothing. We are so confused, we don't realize how dangerous it is to continue voting for democrats and republicans. We've become mentally crippled and dependent on two parties and our current form of government. They can't help you. The best people to help the people are the people. Until you figure that out, you will remain lost.
      Welcome to the Revolution.

Revolution 2.0 is a revolution in ideas and technology along with a vision to move this country forward. Read common sense 3.1 and the rest of the pages on the menu. This will give you a clear understanding of what the problems are, what we need to do about them and most important, how to proceed by taking real action. Our government didn't create itself and it can't fix itself. Problems never solve themselves…

Common sense 3.1 is a call to action to address the problems of the nation.
      http://www.osixs.org/Rev2_menu_commonsense.aspx
The second bill of rights are the baseline expectations and goals for Revolution 2.0
      http://www.osixs.org/Rev2_menu_billofrights.aspx
The Declaration of Dissolution and Termination (DDT) is a formal and legal declaration of grievances prepared by the people of the United States to be served to the government of the Untied States. The declaration is also a formal and legal order by the people to the government of the united states to cease and desist specific government operations in accordance with instructions laid down by the Execution of Dissolution and Termination.
      http://www.osixs.org/Rev2_menu_Intro_DT.aspx
The Execution of Dissolution and Termination (EDT) is the formal process and rules for dissolving parts or all of the old government and then terminating the old government after the new government has been fully implemented.
      http://www.osixs.org/Rev2_menu_Execution.aspx

Yes, you guessed it - this ain't no tea party.

What I do like about this movement, is that it gets the job done without violence. If violence breaks out; the government can impose martial law and the rest of your rights will be stripped from you. With your rights gone; your vote; your signature; and your opinion are irrelevant. With the frustration that is building in America; I can envision this possiblity. Revolution 2.0 sidesteps this pitfall.
If you like what you see at this site; please vote here and let them know of your support:

    • UPTON and the others on the Energy Committee have been bought and paid for........

"When the 85 freshman GOP lawmakers marched into the Capitol on Jan. 5 as part of the new Republican House majority, David Koch was there too.

The 70-year-old had an appointment with a staff member of the new speaker, Rep. John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).
At the same time, the head of Americans for Prosperity, Tim Phillips, had an appointment with Upton."

      Further down in the article.......

"The Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that the EPA had the power to regulate greenhouse gases as air pollutants under the Clean Air Act. Pompeo, Griffith and others want to strip the EPA of that authority.

Until recently, Upton would have been an unlikely champion of that view.

In 2009, he told a Michigan newspaper: "Climate change is a serious problem that necessitates serious solutions." Rush Limbaugh ridiculed Upton for his sponsorship of an energy-saving bill. Tea party groups opposed his bid for the committee chairmanship."

      http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Fred_Upton

He changed his view to get the chairmanship! He is a sell out.

      Excerpt:

      "Climate Change

In early January 2011, after becoming House Energy and Commerce Committee chair, Fred Upton coauthored a Wall Street Journal op-ed with Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, an astroturf front group started by oil billioniare David Koch and Richard Fink (a member of the board of directors of Koch Industries). AFP was involved in the attacks on Obama’s "green jobs" czar, Van Jones, and has crusaded against international climate talks.[5] The op-ed was about new EPA regulations to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Upton and Phillips wrote that the EPA "presumes that carbon is a problem in need of regulation. We are not convinced." They also said the carbon regulation rules are "an unconstitutional power grab that will kill millions of jobs." Koch Industries was among Upton's top contributors in the 2010 election cycle, along with several other energy companies.[6]

In the past, Upton has advocated taking action on global warming: "I strongly believe that everything must be on the table as we seek to reduce carbon emissions," he once stated on his website, which has since been removed. Following the 2010 Tea Party-aided Republican takeover of the House and a heated fight for the chairmanship of the energy and commerce committee, Upton's position on climate change has veered closer to those of global warming skeptics. Upton is considering the idea of using the Congressional Review Act to block the EPA's new regulations on greenhouse gas emissions, in which Congress can overturn regulations from the executive branch within 60 days of their publication in the Federal Register, although the President retains the right to veto."

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Mr Upton, who with his Republican cohorts clamors for *less* government intervention, wants to overturn scientific findings with legislation. He wants to legislate the facts, the truth, away.

There is no debate in the scientific community about these facts.

I wonder if Mr Upton was one of the P.R. people for the tobacco industry who made a high-dollar living, for so long, claiming that cigarette smoking was not harmful to health, and this is the only kind of behavior he knows. Or perhaps he is just after the continued high-dollar support from the Koch Bros. Or maybe he is afraid for his safety and the safety of his family if he does not tow the preferred line. Or, perhaps he is suicidal.

Ignoring these facts any longer *is* suicidal.

Or don't you mean, "Global Warming" "Climate change" "Climate Disruption" "Biodistress" "Irritable Climate Syndrome"... all caused by man's use of fossil fuels (or so they'd have you believe): We'll get warmer winters and less snow, although, maybe we will get more snow in a colder winter caused by global warming, even though temperature anomalies are below zero! Still, there's the droughts, the floods, the warm spells, the freezing spells which the extremists can blame on Global Warming. But what about 'scientists'', what words of wisdom have they to offer us? Well, in 1986 James Hansen of NASA told us to expect temperature rises of between 2 and 4 degrees within the next decade - well where is it? Come on, he's a climate scientist, he can't be wrong!
You could write a book about the laughable failed predictions of the environmentalists and (some of the) so-called climate scientists. And your childish retort, "Give me some more time I'll think of something.' is better applied to the extremists who search for anything slightly abnormal to use as 'evidence' of Global Warming. What a sad, pathetic bunch these people all are. One thing is certain; they're all going to die miserable and unfulfilled people because their vision of the world will never come to fruition, their world will never be perfect, they will always find something/someone to moan about and blame.
