Congressman Ron Paul says he supports the Defense of Marriage Act

Speaking to a group of religious conservatives in Iowa, Republican Congressman Ron Paul (TX) said he supports the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) because the controversial legislation protects states' rights.

In February, President Barack Obama decided that a key section of the DOMA a Clinton-era law that restricts the benefits of marriage to a man and a woman only, was unconstitutional, and ordered the Department of Justice to stop defending it.

During a speech organized by the Christian conservative group The Family Leader, Rep. Paul said the president's goal "is really to undermine state law that defines marriage" and that marriage should ultimately not involve government, the SourceMedia Group reported.

"The Defense of Marriage Act was enacted in 1996 to stop Big Government in Washington from re-defining marriage and forcing its definition on the States," Rep. Paul said last week in a statement. "Like the majority of Iowans, I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman and must be protected."

    • Why not rename DOMA to be representative of what it really is...
Intolerant, homophobic, hateful, faux-christian, control freaks who wish to
impose their narrow minded views on others while having no intention of practicing defense of their own marriage vows.

    • This evil piece of shit is also VEHEMENTLY ANTI-CHOICE. The Libertarians changed their anti/semi-neutral stance to anti-choice to accommodate his politics, and as of the 2008 election, it remained anti-choice. I distinctly remember reading their platform carefully and that they took a firm pro-life position on abortion at that time, because I was looking up alternative political parties in case I needed to jump ship from the Dems. Well, not only have they altered their platform for the coming election, but the evil lying fuckheads REVISED their 2008 platform in Wikipedia! Who do these cunts think they are fooling??? Nothing galls me more than backstabbing oppressors who pretend to stand for freedom. The Libertarians and Tea Baggers are nearly identical, except that the Libertarians are better at putting a spin on their BS, and keeping their nutjobs on a leash.

i mostly agree with you on that, i just have a minor issue with calling it 'pro life'. i would hope we are all pro life, and while i agree women should have a choice as far as rape and health concerns go, i mostly am against abortions as i feel that the fetus is a child being killed. that doesnt mean that others should have to agree with me, and i am for the consensus agreeing on what the limits on abortion should be for the most part. but lets not call people pro life anymore, lets agree all are mostly pro life, they just disagree on abortion.

i also feel that if we allow women to choose to abort on personal grounds, we should allow men to choose to virtually abort, and not be responsible for the child.

YOU of all people have the gall to correct me? I said anti-choice several times. I used "pro-life" when describing what I saw on their platform, which was pro-life. You don't have a uterus, and I don't appreciate you weighing in with your fucked-in-the-head opinion on abortion, having never had to face the possibility of a life-ruining pregnancy yourself. I've read a considerable quantity of your comments, Itsbatshit, enough to know you have thoroughly fucked-up conservative beliefs, but you are constantly trying to pitch them in a neutral manner to get people to like you. You keep forgetting that when you get pissed off, you tend to let your guard down and say some seriously fucked up shit. I haven't forgotten. I'll usually give someone a 2nd chance, but not you. The thing is, you're the kind of guy who does his backstabbing in the polling booth. I think you're a complete and total dick, so just write me off, as I've already done with you.

actually, psycho, i am far more liberal than conservative in everyway from my beliefs to my appearance than you can imagine,, which a nut like you has no idea of because unless someone agrees with you you dismiss them completely, so have a cup of go fuck yourself. as for my opinion on life, i feel a child is a child and murder is murder, not for religious beliefs just because i like kids and hate most adults. if you dont want to run your waistline or your social life, dont fuck without making sure you dont get pregnant. dont use abortion as post pregnancy birth control. but if you want to then claim it as a right, then by all that is fair why shouldnt a man have the right to say i dont want an unplanned birth fucking up my way of life any more than you do so i should have the right to virtually abort? whats your answer there, you man hating whacko? oh right i bet you dont have one because you are too busy trying to portray anyone who disagrees with you as a right wing enemy. enjoy being bitter and alone, and being intelligent enough to know deep down you are wrong and too proud to admit it

just because i dont think people should kill what i consider a baby for no reason other than they cant be bothered to take responsibility doesnt make me a right winger. just because i think that occasionally they are right for a wrong reason doesnt mean we are the same, just like someone being a vegetarian dor example doesnt make them a nazi just because hitler was too

The anti-abortion people call themselves "pro-life" to put a derogatory spin on our position, as if we are "Anti-life".

The real issue is choice, and that's why the "pro-choice" position uses that term.

I think the core issue is how liberals vs conservatives see the whole world. Conservatism is an ideology based on selfishness and ego.

So, when they see that Liberals suport the right to choose an abortion, they assume we WANT or LIKE abortion.

When they see Liberals suport the rights of gays in the military, they assume we WANT to join the military.

When they see Liberals suport welfare, they assume we WANT to receive welfare.

We just value the rights of people- OTHER PEOPLE- to be able to chose these options for themselves, while conservatives want everyone to be forced to live the way they WANT them to live.

SO, like you, I do not LIKE abortion, I do not think it is a good idea, but I believe it is not up to me to make that decision for another person; thus I'm pro-choice.

    • No one who believes in Human RIghts, as Libertarians claim to, should suport this right-wing fundamentalist neocon in Libertarian clothing.

    • Yeah, that too, but he's a lying hypocrite. Claims to be Libertarian just to get press, but he's in the pocket of Oligarchs just like he taught his son to be.

Totally agree! Along with "I want my country back", which is bigot code for "I want to roll back civil rights so that I can enjoy the same grossly unfair advantages as my parents, and the illusion of superiority that is my god-given prerogative".
