Canadian Mother Denied Breast Cancer Treatment

Image

Jill Anzarut, a 35-year-old mother of two in Toronto, doesn't qualify for breast cancer treatment with a new drug that can prevent reoccurrence. Why? The lump she discovered in her breast is too small to qualify her for treatment, according to the guidelines established by Ontario's Medicare system. If she lived in British Columbia, Alberta or Saskatchewan, however, she'd receive the treatment without question.

    • Men also suffer from breast cancer, but American men who have a family history of breast cancer are denied breast cancer screening called mammogram which women get annually free of charge. Sex discrimination.

    • Helping people, I thought that is what medicine is for? Is it cheaper for them to let her die? This is really unfair! Jill Anzarut needs help.

    • Yeah, radical, so much for SOCIALIZED medicine. Never mind that the article ITSELF states that if she was in the western provinces she'd have been covered.

-That's just discrimination. No booby is too small. And if one is smaller than the other, doesn't mean the larger of the two should get more attention.
      They need love equally.

the lump in the breast was too small, not the breast itself.

Malcom Gladwell has a really interesting section in his book, "What the Dog Saw" about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and like so many other things, they are finding that the mammogram is not as foolproof as it has been purported to be, which may have something to do with why they are basing their decision to treat on the size of the lump...or then again, it could just be that greedy insurance companies don't want to pay to keep people alive, unless they can be assured of an ongoing profit made by the patient's unending dependence on pharmaceuticals or treatments. In any event, Gladwell is a fascinating read if you want to understand a bit more about breast cancer.

    • British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan have single payer healthcare also.
How does that work into your condemnation of "socialised medicine" Radical?

Chances are had she been American and her medical treatment not supplied like every other industrialized country, she would be dead already. The system is not perfect but it's a lot better than any non-government system where your life is in the hands of a corporation. IF you have medical coverage congratulations the rest of your country is not so lucky.

Here you *might* get care without health insurance, but would absolutely be made destitute in the process. Even with insurance, many people eventually file for bankruptcy because of the poor quality coverage. How do you consider that superior?
