An article in The New York Times entitled "19-Year-Old Is Charged in Hamster’s Death" features a family who cares about pets the way some people care about malfunctioning remote controls.

Law enforcement agents from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals arrested Monique Smith, 19, for brutally killing a hamster. A felony charge could earn her up to two years in prison. At the least she should get a football in the face, Marcia Brady-style (kids, look it up), from the arm of Michel Vick.

But the comments below the story -- while showing general sensitivity about animal cruelty -- raise another interesting question: "Would she be similarly charged and castigated for killing a roach or an ant?". Don't worry about your summertime squashing fun as a kid -- you're well over the statute of limitations.

So where do we draw the line between natural selection and selective destruction? Before you bite into your next burger, think about it.
