Bank that funded Scott Walker, Now Closed -- Firefighters and others withdraw all deposits.

bundlebear
Firefighters in Wisconsin marched to the M&I bank earlier today in Madison and withdrew their money. In total they took an estimated $192,000.

They asked others to follow their lead. Apparently others did. Just updated:

A call to M&I's Capitol Square branch confirms the bank is closed for the rest of the day.
This is how you protest.

Anyone that has any money in this bank, no matter how little, should withdraw it ASAP. Make them feel the pain that they are causing the little people.

Of course it might be difficult to withdraw today, as they've had to close their doors to prevent a run. This story should continue to get out. The success of closing a bank even temporarily, will inspire other groups to continue their efforts.

When the firefighters arrived at the Capitol this morning they started the chant "MOVE YOUR MONEY!" Firefighters Local 311 President Joe Conway told the audience they should move their money out of M&I Bank. The bank was one of the leading contributors to the Walker campaign due to contributions by current and former executives and board members.

    • Did you know that the current bankruptcy law was written "WORD FOR WORD" by the president of Band of America? Credit unions work with their customers, most for profit banks only work to take money away from their customers. I had an account at a bank for years and when the financial crisis came, it was bought up by Chase. The first thing they did was stop giving me interest on my money. I took it all out and put in Navy Federal! Talk about interest....my money is making money for me, not somebody else!
CREDIT UNIONS ARE FOR THOSE THAT WORK FOR A LIVING!

    • Move your money from a bank to a local credit union. The banks have screwed you, now it's time to screw them back. We'll see just how big is too big to fail.

    • Excellent tactics - hit'em where it hurts the most! Also, people should take advantage of the Supreme Court's ruling allowing corporations to give as much as they want to candidates. You can create a corporation of your own in Delaware for a fistful of dollars - then you can use it to donate as much as you wish to the candidate of your choice. Unions should also create corporations in Delaware and do the same.

    • This is only the tip of the iceberg my fellow Current friends. The Republican party has major plans to pull the plug on the Democratic party and keep the Dems from having any voice from now on. Destroying unions is just the first step. Did you know that In thirty two states, where the legislature is majority Republican, legislation is being sponsored to destroy the voting rights of those likely to vote for the Democratic Party and its candidates in 2012??
College students have always had the right to vote where they attend college, but many states are now working to require residency of the student or their parents, or else no chance to vote in the college town.
New ID card requirements are being imposed, which African Americans, Latinos and Hispanics, and poor people in general, are less likely to possess, with their suspicion of government as great as it is already.
The move to end same day registration is another method being used to cut down the voting population.
Florida is now requiring a five year wait before former felons, who have met all requirements of their sentence, can even ask for the return of the right to vote.
The concept of the right to vote has been fought over the past two centuries, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was supposed to guarantee that no one would be denied that right, but conservatives are working very hard to fix the elections of the future by interfering with that basic human right!

It is not enough that corporations have no limit anymore on contributions to Republicans!

It is not enough that Republican Governors are destroying the rights of public workers by destroying collective bargaining!
It is not enough that Republicans are striking out against the interests of the poor, the sick, the elderly, the young, women, ethnic minorities, and on the issues of the environment, health care and education!
Nothing is enough, as the Republican Party works to make this nation a country dominated by the rich and the corporations FOR the rich and the corporations, and to hell with the interests of the rest of us

It's time we stand up with Wisconsin workers as well as for ourselves and our party. It's time the rethuglicans see the tide ( a TSUNAMI!) turn on them in such a way they will never attempt this total Fascist take over of America again!!!!

Since when are the firefighters not the people? Are they robots? The last time I checked the firefighters, police, nurses, teachers, road workers, paramedics, etc were all people. They vote, they have money and none of those things will ever go toward another Walker. Savor the flavor jerk wad because you are in the minority and will feel the sting very soon.

I just saw pyzo's original comment and I am a little concerned about what current seems to think is censor worthy. As dumb as the comment was, it should be left up so we can make fun of pyzo. :)

Again, if we stop letting people make insensitive, controversial or wrong comments by censorship, we can not have a dialog to enlighten.

And pyzo, I doubt you would make that statement if you were in dire need of a public service.

    • Dear Board of Directors of M&I Bank,
We are now aware of the sins committed by your officers and directors in the last election resulting in the election of Koch-Walker. But we are a forgiving people and would like to offer you a chance for atonement. If those miscreants donate a comparable amount to the campaign to recall the eight union-busting Koch suckers, all will be forgiven right after they present themselves (get ready kennymotown) before the nearest fire station, bend over, and kiss their own asses.
      Sincerely,
      POC (Pissed off Citizens)

    • Special thanks to Almibry and TommyNY for posting concrete actions that I can take. I can now also spread this information near and far. I also invite all of you to remember that this is not merely a Wisconsin phenomenom! Good working citizens all over this country bore the cost of TARP bailouts for the "too big to fail" and now see what we have gotten in return! Everyone who has had enough of this, from coast to shining coast can move their monies into local banks, credit unions and into their mattresses if they want. Thom Hartmann noted that Bank of America profitted over $44 billion (with a B) last year and paid nothing in taxes! They do however have ~115 offshore acounts where they stash their loot! And why haven't we broken diplomatic relations with the countries that allow these companies to store this country's legitimate tax levies in secret accounts? Okay, I retract the question. We all know why. I just got a little carried away here!

Simple solution - anyone who outsources jobs to countries for lower wages should be taxed at 75%. If they want to cheat americans out of jobs for cheaper labor then let them pay for it. Make it so it's not worth screwing americans out of jobs while you make billions in profit. You screw american workers to get cheap labor then turn around and sell it back to americans at outragous prices. We get screwed twice....the least you can do is kiss us. We like being kissed while we're getting fucked.

Hi. In simplest terms. Take the money and run, by doing this it would de-fund :"The bank was one of the leading contributors to the Walker campaign due to contributions by current and former executives and board members." Also, A bank run (also known as a run on the bank) occurs when a large number of bank customers withdraw their deposits because they believe the bank is, or might become, insolvent. As a bank run progresses, it generates its own momentum, in a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy (or positive feedback): as more people withdraw their deposits, the likelihood of default increases, and this encourages further withdrawals. This can destabilize the bank to the point where it faces bankruptcy

No, what they are saying put your money into local small established banks that have lasted 20-30 years - they are not going anywhere. Unlike large banks TD, Commerce who've changed hands so many times you can't keep up. They are FDIC insured just like the big banks. Neighborhood banks know their customers, they are from the same neighborhood, their kids probably play on the same teams. Best part your chances of them being taken over by another large bank are less likely.

    • I read an article in the Wall Street Journal the other day and the subsequent paper that was the basis for the article. (I posted the story here, but it didn't go anywhere.)

The paper proceeded to argue that the banks, coupled with the government and the media, have consistently behaved in a manner that has their best interests at heart (read low risk loans, bankruptcies, and bail outs). Those same entities don't encourage us (the average citizens) to behave in like manner, rather, they actively cultivated an environment of fear and shame in order to induce individuals to act in ways that are against their own self-interest.

It goes on to relate how people can take at least a portion of their power back. This goes hand in hand with what's going on in Wisconsin because I'd bet...it's coming to a town near you shortly.
