NH GOP Senator Says The Mentally Ill Are ‘Defective People’ That Should Be Shipped Off To Siberia

In light of this huge wave of cuts, Sharon Omand, a community health care center manager and resident of Stafford, New Hampshire, called her state senator Martin Harty (R) recently to request more funding for community mental health programs and for the homeless. Omand was shocked by Harty’s response. The state senator told her “the world is too populated” and that there are too many “defective people.” When Omand asked what should be done with these “defective people” that are mentally ill, Harty suggested sending them to Siberia, something that he said Hitler was “right” to do:
Barrington Republican Martin Harty told Sharon Omand, a Strafford resident who manages a community mental health program, that “the world is too populated” and there are “too many defective people,” according to an e-mail account of the conversation by Omand. [...]
Harty confirmed to the Monitor that he made the comments to Omand. [...]
Omand says Harty then stated, “I wish we had a Siberia so we could ship them all off to freeze to death and die and clean up the population.” Omand said Harty appeared to be serious. After Omand responded that his idea sounded like what Adolf Hitler did in World War II, Omand said Harty responded, “Hitler did something right, and I agree with (it).”
Suggesting that the mentally ill be sent to Siberia is eerily reminiscent of actual policies enacted by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Stalin sent countless dissidents, Poles, Chechens, and other groups he despised to work camps in the freezing barren wasteland of Siberia, where millions lost their lives.
Harty has not apologized for making his comments. Republican State House Speaker William O’Brien said that “at Harty’s age [90 years old], he has earned the right to say what he thinks, but ‘he needs to appreciate that as a representative, he will be held to a higher standard.’”

I want to volunteer as the first to go, I really need a vacation and love the snow! So, I'll need ole Martin Harty to pick me up, I'm all packed and ready for our trip to hell together! The behavior of this man and MANY public figures is way more defective than anything I've witnessed in mental institutions. There are nazi doctors hiding at Napa State Hospital as we speak! So to him I say, "are we there yet Martin, are we there yet?"

I keep thinking the GOP leaders will not go any farther...but they keep doing so!! Can they be any more blatant about their agendas? One says shoot immigrants like pigs, this one wants to ship vulnerable people off to die, they all don't give a $#*t about the poor and the sick, and we all know by now they intend to destroy the middle class. Voters gave these vile people the keys to the kingdom in November and they have created their own tsunami for our country! Another election like Nov in 2012, and the rest of us will never ever have a voice again in this country. We will be totally under the GOPS rule and at their mercy....which we all know they have none of.. God help us..... WE HAVE TO VOTE THESE BASTURDS OUT OF OFFICE!

Thanks for this post! I was rather flippant in my two earlier posts and appreciate that you took the time to flesh out some important points. Most mentally ill persons do not kill anyone! Sometimes in these discussions people point out the worst case scenarios to make a point but this can also distort some related important issues.
A large number of people experience some form of mental illness in their lifetimes. Most are productive members of society. Some recuperate on their own and many others heal or at least improve with appropriate care. And sadly there are some with more extreme symptoms either unwilling or unable to receive the care they need. For these people there is often deep suffering for themselves, their families and sometimes their communities. Harty's brutal coldness smacks of sociopathy. There's another diagnosis for your list! Thanks again!

i totally agree, and in many of the cases of mentally ill people that arent quite productive members of society, a LITTLE bit of mental healthcare would go A LONG WAY in moving them into the productive member of society group, which despite what some may think, is where every human being truly would prefer being.
in the case of the Tuscan shooter, the school warned his parents of his mental instability and told them he couldnt return with out seeking psychological care first. All I can say is, as a parent, the only imaginable reason i can possibly think of for why they would NOT get him mental healthcare after that, is that they could not afford it.
Americas' refusal to acknowledge mental healthcare as being just as important as any other form of healthcare is one of its biggest problems, in my opinion. I think if we were to guarantee quality mental health care to all americans SO MANY of our other problems would be diminished, at least. The majority of those resulting in the saving of millions of dollars, im sure.

Actually it was easy to miss because she called it Clinical Depression, and you might have been looking under "D" for it! In any event, her list is not exhaustive, but still made a good point. Time limits and demands being what they are at the moment (for me) I am not able to address this more fully, but would love fuller discourse on these matters! I'm glad you emphasized depression because it seems nearly epidemic. With Walker as governor here in Wisconsin and other states having elected similar people, I suspect that we may see even higher rates of depression! Thanks for underscoring its prevalance and importance!

Sad and true. I wish I had more time right now, because the whole issue of who seeks and gains power is riddled with complexity. Who can so serve without the ego and desire for power that then corrupts?

Of this I know a great deal! As a therapist who had a burgeoning practice before the continual economic decline bottoming out in 2008, I had refused to take insurance for almost 20 years. I worked very hard and offerred a sliding scale that went so low that I was able to provide service to the working poor and people on SSDI. I had a client who worked for a major local health care system and in order for him to use his coverage to pay for my services I was asked to fill out a stack of paperwork over an inch thick. In return they would agree to pay me $20 per hour, requiring him to cover a co-pay of $20 per hour! This this client was not merely one of the walking wounded! His situation was quite serious! Of course I refused to fill out the paperwork and simply charged this client a very low rate. (NB, details changed to sufficiently obscure the identity of the client referenced.)
I decided that my clients needed to pay at each session, as they would pay their hair stylist or manicurist. I then provided my clients with statements that documented what they had paid and included the information necessary for their insurance companies to reimburse them. Over time this became quite successful for many of them. In cases where insurance companies were not cooperative, I simply adjusted my rates.
In 2008 a majority of my clients experienced cataclysmic job losses. Some after long searches, found new jobs at much lower pay. Most got no insurance with these new jobs. Because I never courted people on the high end of the income scale (having never been there myself!) I was left in a state of near bankruptcy.
On a brighter note I was able to barely skirt bankruptcy. I have experienced extraordinary gifts from family, friends and complete strangers! I have provided gratis therapy to my most needy clients. Every time I thought my ship was sinking, something miraculous came through.
Mind you, I am not saying I shop other than at Aldi's and Value Village. I am not saying my socks don't have holes or near holes in them!
I have offered my couch and my basement to family members who are on the verge of not being able to make their rent as our Wisconsin Governor Walker and Republicans beat us into the gound. I have even offered to let soon-to be-squatters use my back yard to raise their tents if they are hardy enough to handle the conditions!
If this fascist takeover continues, I encourage all of you to reach out, accept inconvenience and reach beyond your comfort zone.
Sorry that I went on so long. I should be in bed by now! Nonetheless I thank Beck for triggering a small part of my story!
Namaste!

Do you remember the last time they went this route, and emptied all the asylums, giving the patients just enough money to take the bus anywhere from there? It was "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" everywhere! I remember one fellow going out into the middle of a crossroads intersection, kneeling and preaching biblically to the sky, while cars were swerving and slamming on their brakes to avoid him. While walking past St. Patrick's cathedral in N.Y. on 5th Ave., a woman came running out of the cathedral and down the stairs yelling bloody murder, waving her fist at everyone, ran out into the traffic of 5th ave., and when a taxi slammed on his brakes and stopped six inches from her, she turned and started pounding on the hood of the taxi shouting obscenities.
Which costs more, treating and tending to the mentally ill, or paying for the social consequences of then being at large, and unattended? Jared Loughner is but the tip of the iceberg.

I do believe we should remove the strait ticket part off the ballot and the r.and d and i from the names of those on the ballot. The results of the elections would be unbelieveable.some people would be totally confused and dazed the tracking polls would have a 50/50 chance of being right. That would be the beginning of the voters making a real effort to find out who the man is and what he stands for and that in turn would cause most of the polititions to be specific as to what they are going to do when or if they get elected.I truely believe the people who voted for walker and these radical republican reprisentives and senators had really looked into who they were and their background we would not have this mess on our hands we have now.We now have to spend a lot of time cleaning up this mess they have created will keep on creating

Sen Byrd was older than dirt when he passed, but he was not making outrageous comments, nor did he he not apologize when he offended people. Here's how they really think and why they could give a shit if your children starve and you live homeless the rest of you life:
“the world is too populated” and that there are too many “defective people.” When Omand asked what should be done with these “defective people” that are mentally ill, Harty suggested sending them to Siberia, something that he said Hitler was “right” to do:

I picked 60 as a random number for the most part. A lot of people are "encouraged" to retire from their jobs in their 50's. I know my dad was "encouraged" to be retired and couldn't find work no matter how pathetic the wage (including under minimum wage).
58 US Senators are 60 or over. 89 US Senators are 50 or over.
The rest of workers are often told at 50 that they are useless and worthless, why do US Senators get to be different. If these older US Senators are useless and worthless, then obviously they fall into the same category that this jerk Senator seems to believe the Mentally Ill are. Therefor, it only makes sense that we should exile him and anyone who feels the same to Siberia.
It is agest revenge for all the workers out there that were put out to pasture before they were ready. I lost a lot of talented co-workers because they were "encouraged" to retire. They earned "too much", despite their invaluable knowledge that only they had.
