5 reactors in peril in Japan - It's time to stock up on food! WTF?

My mother, who processes claims for injured workers who are subjected to radiation and other toxic substances working on government contracted jobs, called me to advise me to stock up on dried and canned goods in the event that such a disaster should befall us. I reminded her that radiation stays in the environment for hundreds if not thousands of years and that there would not be any way to store up enough food even to last a couple of years.
She said that the initial fallout is the worst and affects the immediate food supply, however, there would be a falling off of the danger many months out from the ground zero event. Putting away non-perishables that could last a year is not a bad idea. These would be things like rice, dried legumes, canned goods and powdered milk.
I am putting this out there in case anyone is actually interested in talking about his issue and has ideas of how to go about storing and protecting the food supply.
Let us hope and pray that nothing terrible comes of the explosions and heating up of these five nuclear reactors and that the issues can be resolved...for all our sakes.

As usual from the Bp spill, 3 Mile island, the government lies. The NRC is awol. The energy corporations don't care if people die.Like Larry Kudlow said
"The human toll here looks to be much worse than the economic toll and we can be grateful for that,"

BUILDING YOUR OWN FALLOUT SUIT
MATERIALS_• Obtain or make a one-piece suit, preferably
zip-fastened. We recommend the following:
• Tracksuit / Shellsuit
• Boiler suit
• Overall
• Ski Suit
You will also need a thick pair of cotton socks,
gloves and a hood or balaclava helmet to cover
the neck, head and as much of the face as
possible. Ingenious survivors may like to
consider adapting racing helmets for use as a
home-made ‘fallout’ mask.__MAKING THE SUIT
Heat 2 gallons of water to 140° F (60C).
Add 1/2 a gallon of liquid washing up detergent,
1/2 a pint of disinfectant, and 1 lb of household
soap peelings.
Mix well.
Immerse the suit and other items and leave
soaking for 15 minutes.
IMPORTANT
A duplicate set of undergarments should be worn
underneath the protective suit to avoid skin
irritation. The protective suit may be made from
‘impermeable’ materials such as PVC plastic or
rubber, however such materials trap body heat
and may cause excessive sweating and heat
exhaustion. - 1 year ago

heavy duty rubber gloves and overboots also recommended, as is an NBC rated gas mask/respirator. if you can afford one, buy one instead as i have not vetted this particular method yet.

I agree with the people that are saying this is something to pay attention to and consider as a possibility and with those saying to not panic and make sure the information is accurate before saying anything definitive. There doesn't, at this time, appear to be a confirmed meltdown or large release of radiation (through small amounts have been confirmed).
However, Jubal's point is well taken. People as a whole are very very under-prepared (which is to say not prepared at all) for ANY kind of natural disaster. Thinking about how you will get clean drinking water or cook your food in the event of a extended power outage is important and cheap. Extra caned good or dried foods (rice and beans will keep you going) are a no brainer and will last for years. Just keep your stock rotated and it should never go bad. Extra batteries, a radio, flashlights, lighters, cheap ponchos, and other cheap easy to acquire at any pace items will make or break you in long power outage to natural disaster.
There is nothing crazy about a little planning.

Dude, it is 5 REACTORS not 5 POWER PLANTS, that's a huge difference. Please try not to spread anymore misinformation, before you know it, we will be hearing about Japan being vaporized or gone.

I am curious to find out just how bad the fallout would be.
I have researched 3 mile and Chernobyl and it seems as if a radiation leak is not catastrophic.I am ignorant on this subject, just a layman so feel free to tell us more facts.
I am most interested.

Another huge consideration is water. Water is life and our oceans and clean water supplies will be dramatically threatened if the nuclear power plants explode.
