A young mother killed her 3-year-old daughter in Nantucket to fight the "demons" possessing the child, police said Wednesday.

Dora Tejada allegedly shoved her fist into the toddler's mouth, believing it to be a rose that would exorcise the "devil" inside her, according to court documents. Rose pedals were found on the floor in the home.

The 26-year-old also claimed to have the ability to see dead people and to speak directly with the "Holy Spirit," authorities said.

The incident began Monday, when emergency personnel and police arrived at Tejada's Pine Tree Road home to find Nicole Garcia lying on a table and unresponsive. She was later taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, where she died.

Tejada, a native of El Salvador, was interviewed by police with the help of a translator. The immigrant claimed to have fallen asleep on the couch with her daughter, as well as her toddler son, Luis. She said she gave the girl a piece of candy before the incident, which was found at the scene.

Deonila Tema, the suspect's sister-in-law, soon contradicted the claim that they had fallen asleep on the couch.

Tema told police that Tejada asked her to come into the room and pray with her. She claimed Tejada pleaded to God for mercy. Her sister-in-law's behavior made Tema uncomfortable, so she went outside to call her husband, Amilear Tejada.

The young girl was awake and seemed fine at the time, Tema told police.

When Amilear Tejada arrived home, he went inside and emerged a short time later in tears.

Amilear Tejada told police that when he entered the house, he found his sister seated on the couch with Nicole in her arms. He touched the girl and "realized that she was not alive," the report said.

Her brother told authorities his sister claimed to be seeing dead people, calling it "a gift from God." He indicated she had made similar statements before.

Police also observed that Dora Tejada's behavior was very erratic. Officers reported she behaved strangely while at the station and told investigators she was speaking in the language of "the Holy Spirit," with God speaking through her.

The child's death is the first homicide to occur on the island of Nantucket in two years, the Boston Globe reported.

Religion is just another way to cheat others of their labor---ONE OF THE MORE PROSPEROUS ONES!

    • I have never met a "religious" person who knew that Jesus never read, or wrote, the "New" Testament, or that Matthew, Mark, Luke & John were not his contemporaries; they never met him. They just look like deer in the headlights when you tell them.

Do you care about anything? Anything at all? Excluding being a pain in the arse of liberals I mean. Do you wake up with a smug feeling of self satisfaction that you know your existence is merely to annoy and say insensitve, horrible things? I'm curious.

ill try to kill 3 birds with one stone:

if your not racist-any random classification could do that as all human beings, no matter how you group them, by the virtue of being human beings, will have crazies.crazy that manifests in many efforts.from blowing up abrtion clinics/embassies or beheading/dismembering some one to please god.some of the crazy is so extreme, some people actualy choose to eat kosher food despite it tasting like cardboard.an individuals actions never have or will serve to represent any other human being, period.

if you are racist-no the muslims could never kill some one based on demonic possetion as thier deal is based on martyrdom and the hashashimite order.wich has nothing to do with a physical manifestation of satan, but negotiates evil carried out by man.or infidel.it is the christian side of the aisle who has the talent of messing with peoples heads to beliefe thier souls are under the power of foriegn entities.it is kind of the church's thing.a staple if you will.

if you are religious-are you your brothers keeper?

    • This woman sounds like she was mentally ill at the very least. I can't imagine the fear that her little girl must have felt being with someone who is supposed to love her that ends up killing her because of her mind disturbances. Very sad.

I am compelled to respond because I have witnessed this type of indoctrination. It starts with Christ in the desert being tempted by the devil. The devil says "See all the cities and governments? This is all mine and I will give them to you if you worship me." The point is people who believe this crap already think the devil controls everything and that they are the last line of defense. Add some schizophrenia and blamo; dead kids, family; in the name of righteousness. Just plain fucking sad!

    • Throughout history every kind of atrocity has been committed in the name of the 'Holy spirit" or 'God's will".
Anyone who says they speak to God or the Holy spirit is sick in the head and needs help.

The first time I met my now ex-neighbor she went on and on telling me how much she loved the Lord Jesus Christ..blah blah blah. She was also very drunk.
I knew at that time there would be trouble and I was right.
The police were called at least 7 times in the year they lived here.
Domestic violence, screaming, drugs, drunken fights in the front yard, property damage and so on.
That's just the stuff we witnessed outside the house.
I can't imagine what went on inside the house where there were no witnesses.
Thank goodness they didn't have any children.

    • Half the crazy people i have met link it to god . Some think they are the new messiah , or can see angels telling them what to do . Makes me nervous about the origin of religions . They can't ALL be wrong ? Or can they ? One thing i do know , they can ALL be dangerous .

I have one too. It came on so sudden in his mid twenties after a traumatic realization that the love of his life was screwing many other people. It has taken five years and managed meds to bring him back to the world the rest of us (Well most of us) live in. He still hears voices but he is able to talk them down. At his worst, when he was not on the meds I thought he was going to kill himself. The only thing he got wacked in the head with was Catholicism. Religion can be very abusive to young minds!

I am very glad also. I do understand how people have trouble understanding mental illness. It is very hard to process someone seeing and hearing things that no one else hears and sees. I was taken through a learning process and had some very negative reactions at first. The thing that really changed and started to help my brother get better is when he started accepting his illness himself; that was never a forgone conclusion.

Well a shaman or perhaps an artist might understand the language of the symbols he is seeing . I could sometimes lead him out of it , in the beginning . Now he is kept heavily medicated . He was a danger , so they were afraid . Honestly , he hurt those that had it coming . Pimps , and he is banned from McDonalds for the rest of his natural life . It is funny , how he is totally crazy , but also truly good . I wonder about why that is . Maybe , he is too sane for this culture .

i think legit mental illness shows how damaging theology CAN be in an overt manor.while it is damaging to developing minds across the board.just the rest of us are able to negotiate it.not negotiate it in the make viable sense way.but negotiate the damage it has done to us by trying to hide it as best we can.

without religion, would shame follow jerking off?

if i were a religious man i would say he is good cuz he isnt crazy but an angel.to make him normal with medication is against gods will.
im just saying that is how they see it.
wow my theory came full circle.huh.

Interesting My brother was the same;truly good, fully crazy. Being banned from McDonalds it awesome. I banned myself years ago so as not to suffer a complete fit of rage at what they pass off as food. We must be all close too insanity. I have watched so many posters go down in fits in my short time here. Only words in digital form, but oh how they tweak our emotions and sensibilities.

I think in another time , he would have been a great shaman , because , in his own way , he is right a lot of the time , he just needed some one to guide him . He tries to help others . I do not believe there is god in it , but i sure see the truth in what he does . It is like "starry starry night" only my brother is a warrior , he endures .

    • Well, if she really could speak with dead people, it's no wonder she went crazy... It's a shame that no one took her to a doctor before she could hurt anyone.

Attention family members! When you have people saying that they can see dead people and calling it a gift from god, DO NOT LEAVE THEM WITH CHILDREN UNSUPERVISED! Think about getting them some psychiatric help but stop leaving them in charge of defenseless toddlers.

      Joy's helpful hint du jour.

Rational logic...the only problem being that our system isn't set up for offensive behavior...only defensive or reactionary. If push came to shove the child/children couldn't be removed from the mother's care simply because she made those statements.

I bet there was more evidence than just those statements. The system is one thing and it is woefully inadequate. Families need to take control of their own. When family members witness a possible dangerous situation they need to get involved. Although children's protective services are available, even when they are good they are not psychic.

As the child of mentally ill parents, I am painfully aware of how hard it is to get someone that will not recognize that they have a problem help. Sometimes it is not even possible. The children that are solely raised by a mentally ill parent(s) either develop amazing survival skills or die. Extended family members need to be aware of the danger signs and intervene.

To me I have found mental illness is worse than cancer. You can not help someone when they are their own worst enemy. But if extended families see this, they should get children out of danger as soon as possible.
