WASHINGTON — The House on Thursday voted to end federal funding to National Public Radio. Republican supporters said it made good fiscal sense, and Democratic opponents called it an ideological attack that would deprive local stations of access to programs such as "Car Talk" and "All Things Considered."The bill, passed 228-192 along mainly partisan lines, would bar federal funding of NPR and prohibit local public stations from using federal money to pay NPR dues and buy its programs. The prospects of support in the Democratic-controlled Senate are slim. Seven Republicans broke ranks to vote against the bill.

Personally I'd like to see the GOP take away the 30% we give to big pharma for R&D while them screw us on prices.
"This industry is one of the most profitable in the country making about 18 cents profit on every dollar of sales; it is aided by government using our tax dollars to fund about one third of all research on new drugs the industry gets at no charge;
the industry spends about twice as much on advertising, promotion and administrative costs as they do on R & D to develop new drugs; the prices charged for prescription drugs in the US are inordinately high compared to the rest of the world and are rising at about four times the rate of inflation; these rising costs plus those for most all health services are rising so fast, companies are forcing their employees to pay a greater share of them or are reducing overall health care benefits."Article by Cliff
Schecter

While I agree with you, I feel like this is just a ploy to make the republicans look like they're battling the budget. We're in over our heads to the tune of trillions of dollars. TRILLIONS. How much are we spending on NPR? A few hundred million.

Baggers will be running around saying they defunded NPR. 3 months going on 4 and not one single bill has been passed or sign into law.
Ask a bagger how they would create jobs and you think Bachmann sounded like an idiot they would make her look like a scholar.
I know we have or know of someone who is a bagger and I must admit I have an aunt and uncle who are baggers; where do I even begin to tell you what my uncle told me on how he would create jobs when someone tells you that "Gohmert is a smart man?"

It's hard to make policy when they're fighting over continuing resolutions every week. So this is symbolism. Both parties resort to symbolism at times. It's a political game. The good news is while fighting over the budget the politicians aren't screwing up anything else with the country.

It is fucking amazing the shit that the House seems to think is important while ignoring the serious problems exploding all around them. This is such a tiny amount of funding but it is symbolic, in that it it is clearly an attack on factual reporting outlets.
The evil is so evident because the funding is so miniscule. These bought and paid for representative should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to silence one of the few voices in the media that reports based on facts and is not a corporate mouthpiece.
I am a sustaining member and support my local public radio station. To all that love NPR, please consider making contributions if you have not already.

To eradicate NPR and PBS would be eleiminate the compitition. The slow steady emergence and popularity of "Opinion" based "Infotainment" and decline of "Fact" based news works in favor of the Republican view. Like the old saying goes "If you can't bedazzel them with brilliance, than baffel them with bullshit". Which is what the MSM and espically foux news have excelled at, the last election is just one example.

You would have to prove this was punitive. I don't see that accusation standing up considering the Republicans are trying to defund EVERY social program with equal fervor. If the Bill of Attainder rule applied here, then it would have to apply to every single social program, making it unconstitutional to ever reduce funding or cut programs.

NPR and PBS are not unbiased. They are also not going away. Federal funding is only 10-15% of their budget. They will make it up in corporate and foundation donations. Then they can say whatever they want and no one will care.
