American officials have denied paying any “blood money” to buy the freedom of the CIA operative at the centre of a diplomatic stalemate with Pakistan.

Raymond Davis was freed from jail overnight just hours after being indicted on two murder charges after shooting dead two Pakistani men in Lahore in January.
