Libya has declared a ceasefire in the country to comply with a United Nations resolution passed overnight. Moussa Koussa, the Libya foreign minister, announced that the ceasefire would be "immediate" and would result in "an immediate stop to all military operations".

"(Libya) takes great interest in protecting civilians," he said, adding that the country would also protect all foreigners and foreign assets in Libya.

The announcement came as David Cameron said RAF warplanes would be in places in the "coming hours".

Military action follows a United Nations Security Resolution, backed by Britain, France and the US. The Arab League has also called for a no-fly zone, and Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are expected to contribute forces to any military operation.

Mr Cameron's statement came amid reports that Western forces could launch bombing raids against the Libyan regime within hours after the UN backed international military action.

    • UN => an oldtireddeaftoothless lionwannabee. No one ever listens to them unless, well, if they came up with a plan to stop building NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS I guess they could have some heavy comeuppance.

But HAHAHAHAHA ain't gonna happen in our lifetime. Get rid of Monsanto and ethanol and genetically-modified food. Wow, we could be on our knees begging a fast conversion to new U.N. currency toot sweet if the UN did all that.

It would be like really having a GOVERNMENT.

    • yeah....good luck with that bud.....the french and brits are done cock flaunting and are probably already crossing the Mediterranean...(even the canucks have already sent fighters to the rendezvous)....and it seems like on the us side the only question is....whether to f-22 or not to f-22.....on a side note...this reversal of roles is kinda morbidly entertaining....usually the us drags the Europeans into these tumultuous get togethers....oh well

    • Qaddafi Cease-Fire Bid Fails to Deter Allies’ Military Planning

Western allies pressed on with plans for military action against Libya after Muammar Qaddafi’s regime declared an immediate cease-fire and said it was willing to talk to rebels.

U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, who was preparing a set of demands with President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, said he would judge Qaddafi by his actions and not his words.

The Libyan bid “is game-playing and it would be folly for the West to fall for it,” Barak Seener, Middle East research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London, said in a telephone interview. “It’s a stalling tactic and he’s attempting to create fissures within the international community.”

With all that cheap oil? No way Jose. For western governments the only worse thing than a rebellious government that we can't control is a government who can't control his own people for us. I wonder who will be the new "pro democracy" guy they find, if anyone know any Libyan pro free market economic students at Yale keep a close eye out one might be a future president. However I'm even cynical of my own cynicism so I'll wait until this thing is over.

    • I don't think the U.N. really cares, they are probably going to bomb Libya anyway. They have been itching to do it for a month now.
