Two Michigan Democrats were arraigned Wednesday on election corruption charges for allegedly propping up of fake tea party candidates in 2010, the Detroit News reports.Former Democratic Party Chairman Michael McGuinness (right) and ex-operations director Jason Bauer have been charged with forgery, putting people up for office without their knowledge and other charges. The two party leaders allegedly conspired to field phony tea party candidates in an apparent bid to siphon off GOP votes and boost Democrats in two Michigan County Commission races and a state Senate race last year, according to the newspaper. Several of the charges are felonies, some of which carry penalties of up to 14 years in prison.
McGuinnes and Bauer resigned their positions in August. News reports indicate they have not commented on this week's charges.
Last year, as tea party power grew across the country, tea partiers began accusing Democrats and others of using their party label to run fake candidates and skew elections. A lawsuit was filed in Florida last year where Democrats, including then-Rep. Alan Grayson, were accused of creating a Florida Tea Party.

Both "parties" are corrupted by money and power. The sooner we realize this, the sooner we can move on to real political representation.

well since they're democrats, its a crime... if they were republicans, it would be a celebrated victory.

Why is this more than a one day story? Because they're Democrats. While "alleged", this kind of behavior is standard operating procedure for Republicans. The media rarely gives their antics much attention anymore. Who remembers a CIA agent being exposed by her own government? A couple of guys are accused of political skulduggery and immediately the entire Democratic Party's accused of being as corrupt as the Republicans. that's by Democrats (trolls excluded)! You want to know what corruption looks like? How about what's going on in Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Arizona, or Wisconsin, etc. That's just just in the first 3 months of 2011. Karl Rove and Frank Luntz are considered legitimate political geniuses. It doesn't take much genius to lie and cheat your way to victory. Let's not even go back to the Bush years. Are these two men guilty? I don't know, but what I do know is Democrats can and never will be as corrupt as Republicans. It's just not in their DNA. Republicans count on the left eating their own by rushing to judgment, consequently inoculating (Republicans) themselves from criticism. Liberals fall for it every time. Acorn and Shirley Sherrod are perfect examples and so are many of the comments posted here.

Cheeta1:
You are delusional [no offense] if you think the Democratic Party represents the political left anymore. The main difference in the corruption is the organizational level of the two parties. Democrats are far less organized to pull off the big scams without getting caught. As a whole, Democrats are not 'better', they are just less bold. There are only a few with a spine -- Kucinich, Sanders come to mind. We have lost some relatively good ones - Finegold, Wellstone.
The system is corrupt. If you are for the people and the causes of the left, then take off those blinders and stop supporting a corrupt system.

Whether you think the Democratic party represents the left is irrelevant. Perception is everything. This story revolves around the fact that these two men were officials of the Democratic Party. Otherwise it's just two guys behaving badly and why even mention it?

lol,,,IF, this is true, then the Republicans really have affected the heart and souls of our young. IF, true, they took a page right out of the republican operative playbook. With time, we'll learn whether it's true or not. Mind you, since corporate right have driven many to the very edge of violence, I'm surprised that we haven't heard about more of this. With the kind of legislative violence now occurring against the constitution in Michigan, we might be hearing a lot about both forms of retaliation. On one hand, they should consider themselves fortunate that they are still alive to complain about it. Just saying...

Any one that has negative things to say about either side doesn't want this country moving forward. It's like we are still stuck in the time of the Washington because like he said, because like he said political parties will tear this country apart.

Of course you are aware that the USSC has ruled that political "parties" are private clubs and not subject to most rules of discrimination and fairness right? This is why when they sponsor "debates" they can exclude anyone they don't want participating. There are no state or federal laws that force parties into conducting primary elections. If they wanted to, they could in theory permit only white males to select the party's candidate.
Oddly enough, some states has made laws that say that 'only' these same private clubs can be on the ballot.
Welcome to 1984.

I hate it when Democrats act like Republicans.
It makes it hard to take the higher ground.
They must of gotten the idea from the whole Alvin Greene debackle in South Carolina.
But maybe the Democrats did start this trend- It would explain Bush. Too bad that backfired though.

It's pretty disappointing, this is not the kind of behavior I've come to expect of Democrats.
Spineless? Maybe. Compromisers? Nearly always. Diet-Republicans? Frequently, especially in the south.
But cheaters and frauds? Kick 'em out, they don't belong.
Leave the bullshit to the right-wing.

No they won't, they frequently don't do anything at all.
Who rioted to shut down the recount attempt in Florida and then had your right-wing Supreme Court declare your president the winner? Who posts lawyers outside of polling places to challenge peoples' voting legitimacy?
Compare that to the 2010 midterm elections, in which some Democrats barely even campaigned.
You're just looking for an excuse to say the worst thing possible.

HOW INCREDIBLY MORONIC! These two idiots have done as much harm to liberal causes as anyone on the right could have caused. Democrats, and others on the left, DO NOT HAVE TO COPY ROVE'S, NIXON'S AND DONALD SEGRETTI'S PLAYBOOK ("ratfucking" in the 1972 presidential campaign) to accomplish Democratic goals.
It is a fatal mistake to become your enemy to fight your enemy!

I remember this story when it came out last year on NPR but they weren't reporting it as having been anything criminal, just questionable behaviour.
These kinds of things make people distrutful and jaded about the political process, so I'm glad they will be charged with this conspiracy.
It was a pretty stupid plot anyways.

He was under Grand Jury Indictment for lewd behavior with a minor --- showing porn photos to a teenage female student in a computer lab. He did not know her, just sat down next to her, called it up and then suggested they go to her dorm room.
He appeared first [alphabetically] on the democratic primary ballot and just barely edged out the parties pre-selected candidate but they decided to go with him anyway. Proof positive why political parties are a danger to democracy or as Benjamin Franklin said "the masses are asses."
Recently [February] he ran for South Carolina District 64, which has been vacant since the death of Rep. Cathy Harvin. He ran fourth in the primary, garnering only one percent of the local [Manning SC] vote.
His felony charges are still pending.
I used to live in South Carolina and I keep up on the news of the state. As former congressman James L. Petigru famously remarked, "South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum."

Because they are afraid to take a stand and put the right into power. The right is power drunk and as soon as they have a clear path, they show their true colors. Personally, I think the left should boycott all elections until we do get a candidate that represents our values. In the mean time, the right will go over the top with their march toward authoritarian rule. They can't help themselves -- that's who they are.
I know I can count on you in showing us all how true the above statement is. Go ahead, show us your humanity if you have any.

I couldn’t help but cringe when I read your summation of what the left is supposed to be opposed to the opposition. That type of moral or intellectual grandstanding is unnecessarily divisive and demeaning to the reality of the issue. Its like when pro-life (which in itself is a ridiculous title) describes their side as the moral, civilianized or what have you alternative to the baby killers.
Worst still this herp derp, “my side is smart and yours is stooped” is at best delusional and at worst a incorrect measure of political prowess. Delusional first off because you’ve simultaneously rebuke the other side for being mud slingers while also indirectly calling them dumb and incorrect because your assessment of either side in relation to the other is not so extreme to allow one side have a definitive edge over the other or two because in the end a high IQ doesn’t really guarantee you will be the best politician.
