Vice President Joe Biden Mentions Rape In Criticizing Republicans

The vice president, known for speaking his mind and at times putting his foot in his mouth, said that Republicans who want to cut spending while at the same time cutting taxes for the wealthy are similar to rape apologists.
In setting up his comparison, the vice president explained to the audience that before the Violence Against Women Act that he championed was passed into law, “there was this attitude in our society of blaming the victim," according to a press pool account of the event.
“When a woman got raped, blame her because she was wearing a skirt too short, she looked the wrong way or she wasn't home in time to make the dinner,” Biden said.
“We've gotten by that,” he said. “But it's amazing how these Republicans, the right wing of this party – whose philosophy threw us into this God-awful hole we’re in, gave us the tremendous deficit we’ve inherited – that they’re now using, now attempting to use, the very economic condition they have created to blame the victim – whether it’s organized labor or ordinary middle-class working men and women. It's bizarre. It's bizarre.”
After Biden's appearance at the fundraiser, his office tried to focus on the economic message.
"The vice president was obviously making the point that on any issue, we shouldn't blame the victim," Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said. "Blaming workers or union members for states' fiscal crises – an argument made by some Republican governors – isn't the answer."
President Obama has tapped Biden to be his lead negotiator with congressional Republicans on the budget.
Republicans quickly seized on Biden's comments with the party's House campaign arm calling them "tasteless and offensive."
"As much as Vice President Biden should retract this specific statement, he should apologize for comparing our country’s dismal economic situation to such horrid acts as violence against women,” said Joanna Burgos, spokeswoman for the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC).
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) raised about $400,000 from the fundraiser in Philadelphia. The DCCC raised more money than its Republican counterpart in February and January.

Seeems like an appropriate analogy to me. Don't forget that it happens regularly on our roadways though.
If you get hit while driving under the influence, you will probably get arrested while the person who caused the accident may only get a ticket. This is the way our silly country works, and I wish he'd tell it like it is more often.

why is this not ok? republicans mention rape in every bill they propose. it is not rape if you're wearing a skirt... it is not rape if its a full moon... it is not rape if there is a telephone pole within 100 feet of the "alleged consentual sex"... it is not rape if you are wearing a white bra... it is not rape if you've had your period within the last month.... since its not rape, no abortion for you... haha... you thought it was happy fun time abortion land... no ma'am, wipe that blood off your thighs and get back to work.

Sorry to let you in on the scam Joe but the Republican owned US media complex sets the moral tone for the nation not morals or the judgments of the citizens.
Sure it's bullshit of the highest order but it's the way it is in America.
Start pointing out the lies EVERY TIME you are in front of a camera and it may go away in say thirty years or so--that's how long it's grown it's tentacles.

I have been a fan of Joe Biden for a long time. I watched C-Span everyday during the 2008 campaign. I saw Joe Biden speaking to everyone and in every place. He stood in front of a store in Iowa all day and into the evening, mosquitos and all, until the last person there had their questions answered. Friday night Ed Schultz played what Biden said about the necessity of labor unions twice. He said that they should repeat it over and over to fire up the base. He said that he was always a fan but now he is a Biden groupie. I don't think Biden should apologize. He speaks the truth most of the time. Too bad if Republicans don't like what he says. I never like what they say. They seem to think miss-spoke is another word for lying. They LIE and should just admit it. Sometimes it seems so overwhelming. The Republicans seem to have a neverending propaganda machine and so much money. Every branch of government is corrupted by them. They do not care about the "American people." It is about time for Democrats to act like the party of the people and stand up.

Voting in America has nothing to do with the voters wishes--the votes are tallied by Republican owned machines and the tallies are reported by Republican dominated election boards-----that's a double dose of Republican so it's a given to be corrupt.

Biden is not "sticking his foot in his mouth," as you state. That's Neocon talk for Biden busting them for their hate crimes. Biden would be a good and "strong" president and would have a chance to be elected, while the weakling Republican in Democrat's clothes we have now will NOT be re-elected unless - probably unless - the Right Wing nominates a real militant fascist Hitler wannabe. But then again, it's deja vu for some of us familiar with Weimar and the resulting ascent of the Nazis after WW I. Look it up. We could end up with an unbalanced Neocon freak if Obama continues on the crash-and-burn course he's on.

If you did not catch the youtube clip of Kucinich addressing the folks in Madison last week, it's a must-see. Biden, however, is electable and strong. But he's VP and would only run if Obama steps down, a la Hubert Humphrey when Lyndon Johnson bowed out. And, who knows if Biden himself would run awry as Obama has once elected? The proper mantra is: "America will elect a strong bad man over a weak good man virtually every time."

Oh, it's time for the GOP to show their outrage over Joe Biden's remarks, huh? Well, I think Joe hit the nail on the head with this analogy. The Reps always play fast and free with their words and then refuse to backtrack no matter how heinous they get. But when a Dem calls a spade a spade they fly of into their rages of self-righteousness. What a joke. The middle/working class are getting raped to pay for the years of Republican malfeasance. Where were they to call out Wall Street when they took this country down the tubes? No, that's who they side with because that's who butters their bread. No political party has exclusive rights on being not politically correct. But in this instance, if the shoe fits. you've got to wear it. These Rep governors want to lay this latest economic bailout on those who had very little to cause it, while Wall Street and the corporate CEOS continue to reap their big financial benefits. We are all tired of it, except the corporate apologists that is that still ride their coattails. But the people who live paycheck to paycheck feel we are getting raped on a daily basis. So stow your false outrage, Reps. You could care less about the plight of women on a regular basis, but when a Dem uses an analogy you suddenly find outrageous you fly up out of your seats to show your faux disgust. Quit pretending to be in the corner of women or the working class period. It ain't working with this woman.

I agree with him. They have taken more money in the past 30 years from We the People to place in the hands of The Mega corps then We the People have made in 100 years of hard back breaking labor, Left us with out the ability to get a good doc for our back problems, poisoned our water ways, food supplies, and minds with thousands of toxins and depleted our Academic knowledge till the point many are to brain dead to fight back and some are so brain washed they yell out "Yes sir, can I have another Tax cut for the wealthy" like they have Stockholm Syndrome.
At least Bidden finally admitted "that they’re now using, now attempting to use, the very economic condition they have created to blame the victim"Time to stand up....No If your not already standing up you already gave up and I don't want you in my fox hole.....but then again this is War and every soldier of the people is needed to get in and storm them....(In a peaceful manor until ordered otherwise by the general) So get ready for the true horrors of war and the fight of your lives because the Mega Corps won't back down until we throw them from the Sky scrapers and turn their offices into community housing for the homeless.

Obama's biggest contributers were the grass roots people who believed in him. In lame duck he agreed to extend tax cuts for rich for two yrs. so he could keep tax cuts middle class that he gave them, payroll tax extention of unemployment. He wasn't going to lose tax cuts that may bring economy down, when it is better, but still not fully recovered.
