norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=8515 March 17, 2011 - Washington, DC, USA Washington, DC: Americans' support for legalizing the adult use of marijuana has risen from 16 percent approval in 1990 to 45 percent today – according to the latest Pew Research poll, released last week. Support rose four percent in the last year, pollsters reported. More men than women (48 percent to 42 percent) backed legalization, as did more Democrats (53 percent) than Republicans (30 percent). Younger voters(age 18 to 29) were most likely to say that they support legalizing cannabis (54 percent), while only 30 percent of those age 65 or older supported the position. legalizing cannabis (54 percent), while only 30 percent of those age 65 or older supported the position. of those age 65 or older supported the position. Fifty percent of respondents said that they opposed legalizing marijuana – the lowest level of opposition support ever reported by the poll. The findings are strikingly similar to those reported last fall by Gallup, which found that an all-time high of 46 fall by Gallup percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana, and an all-time low of 50 percent oppose the idea. • I'm all for the wonderful weed being legalized for people who are dying from cancer etc... or after you retire. I don't think it is a good idea for pilots, rock climbers. zoo keepers - who feed the lions. Maybe in a decade or so when everything is automated. Then you can get stoned riding to work in your robot car. Oh wait, no work, everything will be automated. Too much munchies leads to a big ass. Go outside and play. Play and teach the next generation to learn and play.--- Little Timmy says, Daddy let's go out and play. Daddy says, Dude I'm too stoned. I'm just going to sit here and play CoD and eat some McDonalds. Then take a nap :P loser.

    • I can't tell you when the last time I saw where anyone was busted for smoking it, the only ones I have seen busted were the dealers. Distrubution = possible tax revenue which the politicians will learn to skim.
I think the best thing is to let sleeping dogs lay, it will not be cheaper if legalized and you can anywhere anytime. I think you should be able to grow, but not sell commercially and I also think they should put spell check in here.

    • it doesnt matter... even if 90 percent of americans supported legalization...the people dont run this country, the corporations do. if the corporations could figure out how to make enough money from marijuana and figure out how to stop people from growing their own, it would be legal.

    • I wonder how many stoned people answered the phone and answered honestly when some stranger asked them if they support legalization.
The reason the legalization bill failed in Cali is because besides the people who think pot is dangerous voting against it , the people in the pot business saw it as a way to take money from their pockets. It's hard to charge big dollars for a weed.

I also think another reason why it didn't pass was that people were not sure how the tax money from the purchase would be spent.

It was a close vote - I voted to legalize it - especially liked the fact that you would have been able to grow marijuana on your property.

I find it funny that the Baby Boomers who grew up using drugs extensively are now the ones most opposed to them! My dad has some vinyl records that I listen to - Most of the songs are about drugs - especially like "White Rabbit" Jefferson Airplane

Actually, the bill failed due to tight restrictions on who could grow and distribute it, basically shutting out small growers. It was a horribly flawed bill. They should just flat-out legalize it with no restrictions whatsoever except for age. Air traffic controllers, pilots, surgeons, etc. would still have to stay sober just as they do now, in order to function in their jobs. Because THC stays in your system longer than alcohol, some occupations would require that people abstain completely. That's fine. As long as alcohol and tobacco remain legal, it is sheer hypocrisy for pot to remain illegal. It won't be long before we see "The End of the 2nd Prohibition".

    • RASTAFARI - all Rastas hold to: The sacramental use of Cannabis sativa. In other words, the smoking or ingesting of marijuana for spiritual reasons, to become high, and in turn closer to God and open to His revelation through deep meditation.

Marijuana is called many different names: Ganja, Ishence, Sleng teng, Cashi, Collie, Chronic, Blunt, Sensi, Bhang, Green, Weed, Cannabis, leaf, Indica, Reefer, Grass, Spliff, THC, Bud, Pot, Ganja, Herb, Wisdom Weed, 13, Smoke, Kaya, Buddha, Thai, Kona Gold, Hash, Maui wowie, Back yard boogie, Home grown, stash, Bush, Mary Jane and Lambsbread. In spite of its many titles, for most Rastafarians it serves one purpose: it is a source of unification by which all may join in perfect fellowship together with each other and with Jah (God) to reason with the Most High. I strongly believe that Marijuana is one of the pillars of the Rastafarian faith by which it stands. As David Hinds from Steel Pulse sings "What keeps us together is the herb that we smoke."

Just another addition to "Bread and Circuses"

"This phrase originates from Rome in Satire X of the Roman poet Juvenal (circa 100 AD ). In context, the Latin phrase panem et circenses (bread and circuses) identifies the only remaining cares of a Roman populace which has given up its birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of his contemporary Romans.[1] Roman politicians devised a plan in 140 B.C. to win the votes of the poor: giving out cheap food and entertainment, "bread and circuses", would be the most effective way to rise to power."

I have to disagree with you on that point- many people who do recreational drugs find it helps calm an overactive mind, allowing them to focus, resolve problems, and get things done. It's a way of self-medicating for ADD for a huge portion of the population. The fact that drugs throw you off your game probably means you have a good chemical balance in your brain that should not be tampered with- so don't. But please don't deny those who benefit from drugs the chance to utilize them. Particularly since marijuana is so much safer than countless pharmaceuticals cooked up in a lab and inefficiently tested before being released to the public. Legalizing pot also gives people the chance to actually grow their own medicine. Different types of hemp have many uses, and our economy would benefit tremendously from having a reliable, fast-growing crop with buyers in many different industries.

    • I voted this down and still believe it is a very bad idea.
and yes, I did inhale ( 3 separate times) but I hated the sense/feeling of not being in total control of my brain and body.

But the PeePul are going to need all the help they can get forgetting about what has been done to their country. If being stoned helps get through the day without slitting your wrists, well, then it's a good thing.

Cannabis for medicine would compete with many pharmaceuticals, with bad side effects and large scale profit. Cannabis would also compete with the alcohol industry, because many would choose cannabis over booze.

Last but not least, the real casualty of the 'war on drugs', hemp. Hemp would compete with many, many industries, all the while helping our environment. Hemp filters the air during it's growth cycle, plus it is 100% biodegradable. Hemp could replace many products, whose production pollutes our planet and end products fills our landfills.

Hemp can be grown for fuel, replacing the need for corn in ethanol. Corn has so many food uses, why use a food for fuel, when you could use a weed.

    • Wooohoo! If they say this is the democracy that they say it is, it should be legalized very soon! This country was built as a constitutional republic by the way, not a democracy. But anyways, its a freaking plant for heavens sake, and it's safe! Alcohol and Tobacco are both plant derived, and well they aren't very safe but they are legal! I thought this was a free country, where I could choose to live the way I wish as long as I do not cause any harm to those around me.

Dude, that is so weird that you refer to this country as a republic instead of a democracy. I've heard that sentiment many times and wonder if it is something that is taught in the south. Having been educated in NY, I was taught that we live in a democracy and the word republic was applied to communistic or fascist regimes such as The Peoples Republic of China, or the United Soviet Socialist Republic.

the idea of a republican government is a pseudo socialist ideology, distribution of power among the citizens of the nation. We only become a democratic republic because we, the citizens, elect people to do have the power for us. To me they fail in their attempts to represent us, so tell which one sounds worse?

Democracy - Everyone gets a vote
      Republic - Few represent many

US is a Democratic Republic because everyone gets to vote for those who will represent them. I don't know where you guys went to school, but clearly it didn't work. A true democracy would be a nightmare, as everyone would spend the majority of their time discussing politics and voting for every little thing. A dictatorship is the opposite. We found something in between, and it can be saved if people sponsor/elect politicians instead of coorporations.

I understand the distinction between the two words, it is the insistence of referring to this country AS a republic that I question. The mama grizzly called America a republic like a half dozen times in one of her "speeches" and I'm trying to figure out if that is regional, generational or "Luntzian".

The politicians represent the corporations before the people. We need to elect what is euphemistically referred to as public servants. Also the electoral college has to go. The one "public servant" that should represent the nation should be elected by popular vote. not demographics. I don't see this happening but being the opinionated so and so that I am I had to chime in. Excuse the interruption, please.
