You won't see this in national headlines! Jennifer Rexford, a BP-hired oil spill cleanup worker has been documenting her condition that is getting worse by the day. Filming herself and her coworkers, all American workers, all are DYING and BP is NOT taking responsibility!!!! Severe neurological damage, paralysis, internal bleeding, death! Check out Jennifer's Youtube page, there are more videos. Watch her story. Watch her talk to BP claims line. Tragic!

SPREAD THE WORD TO GET THIS ON NATIONAL NEWS!!!! BP IS NOT PAYING FOR THEIR HEALTH CARE!!!!!

    • Oil Spill Eater II There was a non toxic Alternative to clean up the spill that has been successfully tested by BP after 10 months of spill damages. The Coast Guard sent a letter from headquarters stating to the FOSC to take action with OSE II, and the EPA, Lisa Jackson stopped the Coast Guard from allowing BP from implementing OSE II. In fact the EPA stopped the application of OSE II 11 times denying State Senators direct request for use of OSE II from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. La Department of environmental requested the use of OSE II as well, EPA's Sam Coleman denied their request without reason. Governor Jindal tried to get OSE II demonstrated on the Chandelier Islands on May 6, 2010, and the EPA stopped the Governor as well. The EPA in fact stopped the use of OSE II 11 times, without a reason given. Had the EPA allowed Governor Jindal to allow the demonstration of OSE II on May 6, 2010, it is possible a significant portion of the environmental damages, including the shorelines and the seafood industry would have been spared. The toxicty test comparison between OSE II and corexit really cannot be compared since with corexit, the label states it can cause red blood cells to burst, kidney, and liver problems if a chemical suit and respirator are not worn. OSE II in contrast can be used to wash your hands and is non toxic. The BP Deep Horizon spill has proven that corexit only sinks oil and causes the same oil to be addressed a second time when it comes ashore as under water plumes, or tar balls, while OSE II has a substantiated end point of converting oil to CO2 and water. • One company poisons people with crude oil and corexit, half a world away TEPCO in Japan is ready to let thousands develop cancer from a stupid GE cold water fusion reactor that is spewing deadly plutonium. Contaminating the sea and the food chain in the ocean. Only morons still believe our future is fossil fuels and nuclear power. It's going to have to be wind, tidal, solar, geothermal, conservation. Until the day comes when coal can be mined and processed so it can be mined and burnt clean, (right now impossible) those are our alternitives if we care about spaceship earth. Other than coal which we have a four hundred year supply of fossil fuels will be gone. There has been a major scientific breakthrough in hydrogen power technology. Hydrogen once cost effective will be the fuel of choice. But if we the people do not demand investment to make it happen, we are fucked

Tom---methane(natural gas) is I think the best choice---we can do anything with it. We can even use it in fuel cells to produce electricity. We already use it for almost everything----we even have gas refrigerators. We already have considerable infrastructure---and NG is already the cleanest, least expensive consumer available form of energy we have.

We can run our vehicles on it---we've been doing it for over 90 years--no batteries required.

And methane is both a fossil fuel with more reserves than coal and petroleum put together----and it is a biofuel, we can make it easily and inexpensively from any type of biomass at all, including sewage and landfills. We've been doing it for over 160 years.

Look into methane----it would be a lot more versatile, cheaper, and easier to implement than hydrogen.

As long as we do not resort to fracking, I have no problem with natural gas or methane, and as usual you are right. Although there has been a major breakthrough in hydrogen extraction, time will tell, but wetdog you and I agree on almost all these issues. Funny how a couple of older guys see what so many our age do not. Progressiveshiv is another.

      Thanks Tom.

Another interesting property of methane.(CH4). CO2 is a greenhouse, but it is not the only GHG. Methane is also a greenhouse gas(GHG) A very powerful GHG. Methane has 17 times the infrared capture and heat retention capacity of CO2. This means, that if we capture CH4 that would have ordinarily escaped into the atmosphere, for instance, by treating sewage or tapping landfills----and then use that methane, we are converting it into CO2. This means that with as little as a 6% biomethane to fossil methane mixture, we can achieve neutral GHG effect emissions. In other words, the effect of warming on the atmosphere is the same as doing nothing at all. Any mixture of greater than 6% biomethane will produce emissions that will produce less retained heat in the atmosphere than doing nothing. We would be capturing a high GHG effect gas(CH4), and converting it to a low GHG effect gas(CO2).

There is no other way to do this. We can not even do that with hydrogen.

      @aranmade

Methane is both a fossil fuel and a biofuel. We can produce methane cheaply and easily from any type of biomass at all, including sewage and landfills. We've been doing it for over 160 years.

The city of Lunen, Germany(pop. 90,000) supplies ALL of their heating and electrical energy needs, and a significant portion of their transportation fuel needs with methane produced by the anaerobic digestion of sewage of livestock farms in the vicinity. The left over by product of this process is clean water and compost. There is enough methane excess that it is pumped into the national gas pipeline grid. Germany has set a goal of producing 20% of their methane from biosources by 2020. They are presently on coarse to meet and exceed their 20% by 2015, 5 years ahead of schedule.

    • FORGET THE DOCTORS AND STOP CRYING. Start drinking spirulina and wheatgrass pronto! Twice a day or more! USE FRESH SPRING WATER IF YOU CAN. Do not drink tap water. Start fresh juice cleanse. You must clean it out with the foods and water that can bind and flush! Remove yourself from the area and get all the consumer chemical burdens out of your environment - i.e. all natural. Educate yourself and take individual action. Thanks for reporting.

I would say that any bashers of this are just cynical to a fault, or have a stake in what she's fighting. This is seriously messed up, and exposes the most serious flaw I see in this country: the lack of honest and honorable reporters, telling the people what they really need to know.

      Do a little independent thinking.

WHO is telling you it is spam and what would be their reason for doing so?

Are THEY presenting any evidence that it is? Or are they telling you---"Since there is no reports like this in the mainstream media, it must be false."

If there are no reports of this in the mainstream media, why not? Is it because it is false? Or is it because of "managed public opinion"? If so, who would wish to "manage public opinion"? Would BP want this story covered up? Why? (that should be simple enough to figure out) Why would the government want this story covered up?(hint----who will look bad if it is true? Who continues to sell oil drilling leases to industry pals and collect large sums of money in campaign contributions and other "gifts"?) Who told you that there would be a boot on BP's neck?

Who has lied to you before? Have oil companies lied to us before to maximize profits and limit or evade liability? Has the government and politicians lied or managed news to make themselves look better or further political agendas? What does the person who put this up on YouTube have to gain by doing so? Do they have the possibility of making a lot of money if they receive what they are asking for---medical treatment? I don't see that the person who posted this has much possibility of personal gain even if every single person who sees it supports them 100%. In fact---there is a strong possibility that even if the poster gets 100% support from everyone who sees it, they still will not get what they want---their health back. This person might die anyway. In which case, money would do them no good at all.

I can't tell you which side is true.

But I can say, when I answer those questions, it seems FAR more likely to me that the person who posted the video is telling the truth, and the oil companies, government, and people with a political agenda to promote are FAR more likely to be lying.

Call me foolish----but I HIGHLY doubt that the skunks that have tried to lie, manipulate and exploit me in the past on so many occasions have suddenly changed their stripes.

And our society and culture has degraded into a state of ignorance and complacency with these injustices. This is truly a tragedy, and one that I'm sure happens a lot more than is shown on the effing media.

What are we doing? We need to protest. We need to stand up and fight these corporations that have been slowly taking away our freedoms bit by bit ever since the monopolies of the Gilded Age, and most recently since the Bush Administration. This is not okay, and the fact that we are in a state of crisis in The Middle East and Libya is even more frightening and deserves immediate action. The government is clearly not going to do that for us. It is our job as citizens to quell this beast ourselves.

    • Corexit.

In true BP style, it sounds like this stuff was sprayed without regard to what may happen to it after entering the Gulf. Maybe -- MAYBE -- the chemical ingredients in it are nontoxic to humans. But what about the reactions it makes with the chemical and biological agents in the Gulf of Mexico?

Any AP Chemistry student can tell you when you take an excess of one reactant and combine it with something else, you get something you never really expected in a 1:1 ratio.

In the panic to clean up the oil, does anyone else think it's possible BP may have dumped an excess of Corexit in the Gulf?

Even if there wasn't an excess, can anyone guess how much research they did as to what happens when you put Corexit in the Gulf?

Let me give you a hint. BP was probably about as careful with it as they were to make sure an oil spill would never happen in the first place.

--------" In true BP style, it sounds like this stuff was sprayed without regard to what may happen to it after entering the Gulf."---------

Corexit is manufactured by a subsidiary company owned by BP. They were buying it from themselves and telling people how much they were spending to on fixing the damage they caused. Actually, what they were doing was simply shifting profits from one column to another column.

The money that BP pledged for compensation was not cash. They pledged future earnings pumped from wells on lease holdings. At $7 per barrel. YOU as a US citizen own the oil. All BP did was guarantee that they will be able to buy oil in the future at $7 per barrel(42 gallons) and sell it for $100+ per barrel. Even if new drilling is shut down, BP has guaranteed themselves about 30 billion barrels of oil at $7 per barrel which they will sell back to you at $100+ per barrel----then pay a little bit to the compensation fund.

BP is not going to go out of business. Guaranteed.

    • In reading these comments, I am appalled at how uninformed the general public is. I was a cleanup worker for the Gulf spill and also for the Kalamazoo River spill in Michigan last year. I have the MSDS sheets for crude oil, weathered oil, and the 2 Corexit dispersants used in the Gulf. Yes the crude oil is hazardous to your health, but most of the beach workers were never exposed to the hazardous chemicals in crude oil. Most of the volatile chemicals weather out of the crude oil within 24 hours and you are left with the heavier "tar". And for the 2 Corexit dispersants, on a scale from 0 - 4 where 4 is extreme, Corexit is a 1 for slightly hazardous. That seems a long way from the "deadly toxins" that I hear everyone talking about. But I do agree with Claireee in saying that the HAZWOPER class was a sham. We were taught proper PPE, but the final test was an open book test. So even if people couldn't grasp the material, they still passed the course. And a lot of the workers with one of the companies I was with were supposed to be support personnel and never handle the actual oil, were out on the beaches cleaning it up without HAZWOPER certifications.

HAZWOPER is a different certification altogether. I think you are thinking of the sham that Premier did for access to the MS-252 response and that pitiful HASMAT certification that the general public had. HAZWOPER 40 wasn't offered to workers in general unless they were (like I suspect you were from the sound of it) likely to come in contact with less weathered oil. You did need the 40 hour module for that. The only reason I have the 40 is so that, as someone involved in wildlife capture, transport, rehab and release I'd have to be cleared to go into some of the more hazardous areas.

Just as an aside, weathered oil can be just as bad if not worse for wildlife in terms of immediate physical distress.

Yes I am talking about the Module 2 training from Premier. On my crew I was the only one with a HAZWOPER 40, the rest of the crew went through the 4 hour Mod 2 class, which was a joke. I have been through numerous HAZMAT related classes and I am OSH 48 hour management certified. The lack of training and the lack of enforcing OSHA standards was very disturbing.

Ah, yeah now I know what you mean. I forgot about the mods. I was in Mods 2 and 4 (I think it was 4...the Parapro for oiled wildlife resonse). That in itself was annoying and an obvious attempt to stall the effort. Remember the "hotline?" ZOMG. In hindsight I think it was that, because BP was required to train workers they fixed it by simply making it impossible to get trained. Seems to me like forcing a megacorp to pay to clean up their mess is akin to sending a suspect out to clean up his crime scene. I wish we'd just gotten it done with all available resources and then just sent them the megabill. I'm not so naive as to think it would ever happen that way, just wishful thinking.

As Exxon was without conscience then, so is BP is without consciense today. Business is a human construct. Yet our U.S. Supreme Court recognizes the fictional "human rights" of corporate "citizens." Now's the time to challenge these decisions, to reverse these decisions, and place our business community back where it naturally belongs - under the heels of the people. Hold BP and our representatives in Congress accountable.

Additionally John, in Prince Wm Sound where the spill occurred the orca pods have not reproduced since, and are largely considered a "lost" population. Of course it could be a "coincidence" that oil/dispersant damage to apex predators shows up most commonly years later by way of reduced fertility and fetal viability, which takes years to show (hence the lack of photographic evidence of huge wash ups of dolphins, orca etc). Just as I'm sure it's a coincidence that so many fetal dolphins washed up in the Gulf Coast this year.

I am a biologist, and I have HAZWOPER 40 certification. I went through the training for this cleanup and can say from first hand experience that crews and workers WERE NOT versed in proper PPE usage and safety. Were. Not.

From your description, that was level D Personal Protective Equipment. So it was fitting for that level of cleanup most likely, if what you are talking about seeing is video of the beach cleanup. But of course no one was enforcing them to keep them on and it was really really really hot (hence the suits rolled down to the waistbands). They also insisted we NOT wear respirators as they "would be closely monitoring air quality for each job site and distributing respirators where necessary." And, I was also told directly that "it looks bad on camera."

Me being the cynical trouble maker, I found that to be just a skosh "off." So I asked them if we could bring our own (yes, I am such a geek I have my own respirators. Cue eyeroll). I was told anything brought in, including personal PPE, would be immediately confiscated and not returned due to concerns of it being removed from the exclusion (aka "hot") zone and creating a health hazard offsite. They weren't amused when I involuntarily snorted.

Did you know that if you pick something up while in full PPE and you find it is too heavy that you should ask your buddy to help you? And if it is STILL too heavy, you should get another person. And if it is STILL too heavy, you should probably get some equipment.

Yeah, THAT is the kind of training we received. Ask others on here who went through it, they will back me up.

First----BP was making people sign waivers that they would not sue or hold BP responsible for anything that happened to them. That is for workers, contract help, and people who received compensation. This was well documented on CNN.

Second, unions would not stand for this---for either full time employees OR temporary employees. They would be there with medical, legal and any other help they could provide----INCLUDING strikes if necessary. Why ELSE do you think the Republican corporate stooges are in such a huge hurry to bust the unions? Where is OHSA? We should be having open congressional investigations.

Court cases take time---a lot of time. Exxon Valdez drug on for over 20 years.

Even if BP loses in court----they will just blow it off and refuse to pay anything----with the full blessing of government laws and bureaucratic hassles----thanks to their deep pockets to pay for lawyers and politicians. The Republican governors of Mississippi and Louisiana have already made it crystal clear that BP owns them, bought and paid for. And they are being touted in the press as front running possible Republican nominees for president in 2012.

BP seems to me to CLEARLY be using the same game plan in the Gulf of Mexico that Chevron is using in Ecuador. They probably are even using the same lawyers.

Really? Why then did members of the GOP call the 20 Billion Obama made BP put into an escrow fund to pay for damages call the money a "slush fund".

You have it all backwards. Corporate American has always supported the Republicans very heavily because that's who they get their tax cuts and benefits from.

The top 10 biggest contributors to the 2008 elections were Corporations and Unions.
Corporations gave heavily to the GOP and Unions gave to the Democrats and there were more
Corporations than Unions in the top 10...I believe it was 7 to 3.
That's a fact that anyone can check for themselves.

Why do you think there's a move by GOP Gov's to bust unions everywhere they can?
Might it be so that no large contributors can compete with the Corporations.....
Workers everywhere understood that......it wasn't just union people who were protesting all over the place. If you work for a paycheck the corporations and their GOP puppets were coming after your rights too!

Sciencecorps.org: Gulf Oil Spill Health Hazardshttp://www.sciencecorps.org/crudeoilhazards.htm

Dr. Michael Harbut, Karmanos Cancer Institute

      Dr. Kathleen Burns, Sciencecorps

Many people will be exposed to airborne and waterborne chemicals as a result of the BP Gulf of Mexico spill. It is important to understand the potential toxic effects and take appropriate steps to reduce exposure and harm.

This page contains information, primarily from federal sources, on health effects that can result from exposure to crude oil. A tandem webpage that discusses potential heatlh effects of dispersants can be accessed at: www.sciencecorps.org/gulfspillchemicals.html

These webpages should not be relied upon for diagnosis or medical treatment and do not provide specific medical guidance, which must be obtained from an individual’s personal medical care provider.

      ____________________________________

      Crude Oil Health Hazards

Crude oil contains hundreds of chemicals, many of them well established as being toxic to people. Many of the crude oil chemicals are comprised hydrogen and carbon (e.g., simple straight chain paraffins, aromatic ring structures, naphthenes), and some also contain sulfur, nitrogen, heavy metals, and oxygen compounds.

A list of common chemicals in crude oil is listed in Table D-1 of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control “Toxicological Profile for Petroleum Hydrocarbons” at: http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ToxProfiles/tp123.pdf (CDC, 1999).

Crude oil composition varies slightly by its source, but its toxic properties are fairly consistent. Chemicals such as benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are very toxic components of crude oil and of high concern. These and many other chemicals in crude oil are volatile, moving from the oil into the air. Once airborne, they can blow over the ocean for miles, reaching communities far from the spill. They may be noticed as petroleum odors. Consequently, both those working on the spill and people who are far from it can be exposed to crude oil chemicals in air.

To provide brief summaries of crude oil health hazards for the public, we prepared the following handouts that can be downloaded and printed.

      www.sciencecorps.org/crudeoilhazards-public.pdf

      www.sciencecorps.org/crudeoilhazards-workers.pdf

With respect to public policy, an emphasis on protection and prevention of disease is an appropriate public health strategy when faced with the potential for widespread contamination and public exposure to toxic chemicals.

      Exposure

Exposure can occur through skin contact, inhalation of contaminated air or soil, and ingestion of contaminated water or food. These can occur simultaneously. Exposure pathways may result in localized toxicity (e.g., irritation of the skin following contact), but most health effects are systemic because ingredients can move throughout the body. Exposure varies based on the duration and concentrations in contaminated media. Differences may result from location, work and personal activities, age, diet, use of protective equipment, and other factors.

Concurrent exposure to other toxic chemicals at work and home must be considered when evaluating the potential toxic effects of crude oil chemicals.

Reassurances that crude oil reaching the shore is all “weathered” are contradicted in many locations where shoreline oil is not weathered. When possible, obtain accurate local information from an objective source with the means to evaluate the oil’s composition. Unweathered crude oil contains the volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), including benzene, that are listed in the CDC document linked under “sources” below (see Table D-1). Claims that weathered crude oil is safe are incorrect, although it is less toxic than unweathered crude oil with respect to the presence of VOCs.

Some chemicals in crude oil are volatile, moving into air easily, and these can often be detectable by smell. Not all airborne chemicals have a detectable odor, so the absence of oil odors does not mean that there are no crude oil chemicals in the air. Some information on the locations and amounts of chemicals is at: http://www.epa.gov/bpspill/index.html Unfortunately, the information is very limited and not readily accessible, as discussed on our tandem webpage at: www.sciencecorps.org/gulfspillchemicals.html under the heading: “Failure of the Federal Government to Fully Disclose Test Results”.

Reducing exposure will invariably reduce harm. OSHA guidance on protective strategies for oil spill response workers is available at: http://www.osha.gov/Publications/3172/3172.html A protective approach requires minimizing the amount of exposure to crude oil chemicals.

      Basic Physiological Effects

Crude oil is a complex mixture of chemicals that have varying abilities to be absorbed into the body through the skin, lungs, and during digestion of food and water. Most components of crude oil enter the bloodstream rapidly when they are inhaled or swallowed. Crude oil contains chemicals that readily penetrate cell walls, damage cell structures, including DNA, and alter the function of the cells and the organs where they are located. Crude oil is toxic, and ingredients can damage every system in the body:

respiratory nervous system, including the brain

      liver reproductive/urogenital system

      kidneys endocrine system

      circulatory system gastrointestinal system

      immune system sensory systems

musculoskeletal system hematopoietic system (blood forming)

skin and integumentary system disruption of normal metabolism

Damaging or altering these systems causes a wide range of diseases and conditions. In addition, interference with normal growth and development through endocrine disruption and direct damage to fetal tissue is caused by many crude oil ingredients (CDC, 1999). DNA damage can cause cancer and multi-generational birth defects.

    • The BP oil spill is Obama’s Hurricane Katrina. His laid back approach to this crisis matched the Bush negligence in New Orleans. There was no outcry because we still had high hopes that Obama would come through for us, on this issue and others. In hindsight he got off easy. The dispersants that they spread around merely made the problems sink to the bottom, instead of getting cleaned up. The desperate-for-employment residents of the gulf who had their lives disrupted by this event were made into victims of BP’s and the Obama administration’s negligence. Any time a corporation tells you not to worry that is the time to begin worrying. I can’t imagine working on that toxic oil slick for the time periods that many clean-up workers did. Living in NYC I am very aware of the problems that developed for the workers in the Ground-Zero pit. The gulf situation is very similar. http://sibob.org/wordpress/

Who are you really mad at anyway? Some of you want to blame the President, some Congress and others want to just whine about how 'broken' the system is or just merely offer hollow condolences. I'm sorry if I seem callous, but who here is actually surprised that this is happening? Where you shocked when the 9-11 first responders were denied health coverage? Are you surprised that eating McDonalds food makes you fat or that Wal-Mart's products mostly come from child labor overseas? I know, it's all shocking, unimaginable, and if I throw up all caps, my point will appear to be more relevant, but the only reason no one is blaming the real villians here is because everyone knows that they alone have no real power against them.

I work with a Neo-Con (in almost every sense of the term) and he loves to play the role of indignant a-hole. I talked to him about this very issue and his response was..."I guess you should stop buying gas then." I can see how easy life would be, existing on that side of the issue. We shouldn't do things because they are easy, we should do them because they ARE hard. (Kinda JFK :P)

I think it's time to stop attacking those who are actually on our side, even if they don't do EXACTLY what we want, when we want it. If WE want something, then WE have to act and make it happen. If WE want health coverage to be fair (and this is really what this is all about), then WE need to push it, hard! Like Anti-Union busting rallies hard. Just because an issue doesn't affect you personally, doesn't mean you can't help change it's outcome for someone else.

Also, just because we agree (which I think we do) that something is messed-up, corrupt, or 'wrong', doesn't suddenly fix the problem, nor does it magically lift the issue from our shoulders of responsibility. So either be actively involved in the solution, or live with the outcome and be completely silent.

Obama is not a perfect man, but he remains better than the alternatives, who are also human.

    • Something about this seems suspect. It seems all that would be needed is a doctor and an attorney. Especially, if there were others that are in this shape.

That's one thing, but how about getting the people behind him? How about talking to the people that voted him in and letting them know what's going on? I know he saw the pouring of support when the Governor of Wis. was trying to take away the rights of the labor workers.. How about going on TV and talking about it?

I'm sorry, but i don't care how much i get voted down when i scream "OBAMA, DO SOMETHING!" because the people that vote me down are the idiots that can't open their eyes and see that while he's playing sportcenter, people ARE FUCKING DYING!!!!
