The world-famous bear died alone in his compound, bear keeper Heiner Kloes told The Associated Press.
"He was by himself in his compound, he was in the water, and then he was dead," said Kloes. "He was not sick, we don't know why he died."
A post mortem will be conducted on Monday to try pinpoint his cause of death, he said.
Between 600 and 700 people were at Knut's compound and saw the four-year-old bear die, German news agency DAPD reported.
Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit called Knut's death "awful."

Well ALF Germany Pledge to kill the bear for years as did some off shoot groups from PeTa there and fear other have been found after hour trying to get to the bear fro the last 3 years say the bear should die than be in zoo. If the Bear is found to have been poison or infected on purpose by some one this will now should the true face of Animal right Extremest that want death of animals more than to save them. Zoo's Keep alive many animal that are endanger Yes some zoo's need major updates but they should be closed or protested for trying to do what they can to save animal.
This bear would have died in eh wild it was saved because people cared to do so but many in the extremes did the worse to try to kill or hard the bear of those who were taking are of him. over 1000 death treats to Zoo personal and attacks on many that just worked at the Zoo and had nothing to do with the care of the bear. If the Bear died of something natural it needs to be looked into but then again if the bear was ill it would shown as he was given physicals often.
This bear did not suffer a day the Zoo was taking great care of him So I do not think it was due to any lack of care in anyway.CC

What do you guys think about zoos and aquariums? Are the animals suffering?
I am not referring to animal sanctuaries, but facilities for our own pleasure.

This is so sad. You could tell Knut was in a lot of distress before he collapsed into the water. Painful to watch. I read about this yesterday. I loved seeing the pics of Knut "growing up." My heart goes out to the German people.

I agree with you. It looked like he had been poisoned. I hope they are honest when, and if, they post the autopsy in the news.

My condolences to the German people. However, I am still mourning the loss of Tatiyana, the San Francisco Zoo's female Siberian tiger. She was killed by police after escaping her compound because three young, drunk assholitic juveniles (one of whom was mauled to death) thougnt it would be fun to throw things at her. She responded naturally, but she died unnaturally. There are only 3 to 5 thousand Siberian tigers left on this planet, with only a little over 1500 living in the wild. Most of them live in zoos.

And to thing That Tigers Habitat that been there 80 years with not single problem till those 3 drunk a-holes thought cool to tease a female tiger who was very territorial. The Zoo had to pay out money due to this and that was so wrong it just made me sick. Think 80 years and not single problem .. that is saying a lot of thing were being done right. Now the zoo is having bad problem due to the lost of all that money that went settle the court case those two used to buy more drugs and more booze for them self. I think the 2 A-holes should have been fed to the remaining tigers .

Oh my God. That is so heartbreaking. The poor little guy should
never have been allowed to be alone, for his own health & safety.
If his own mother rejected him it was likely because he had the
smell of humans on him. Mammals' milk contains elements of
medicinal value in it too. He would have been a lot better off
in the wild than being so young, so alone, and so captive.
He would have been better off being cared for by a family
of loving humans until he was an adult, then to mate with
a female. Love be with you brother Knut, now and always forever.
I'll always remember you in my prayers as if you were a member
of my German Shepherd family of canines I helped raise.
I wish animalia libero were still with us here on Current.com,
so that we could hear what he'd have to say. So very very sad.
I'm glad you're at Peace now, and hopefuly with your mom's soul
again soon, friend. - 1 year ago

With my bb gun, I did something similar to a bird. Likewise, I felt terrible. Never shot to kill again. What a learning experience at such a young age...
