AZ Gov. Jan Brewer Wants To Fine Smokers And Fatties

-

- bambuu
- added this
Childless adults who are obese or suffer from a chronic condition and who fail to work with their doctor to meet specific goals would be charged $50 annually. The $50 annual fee also would apply to all childless adult smokers.
“If you’re not going to manage those things and take some personal responsibility, and in turn that costs the state more money, then you need to have some skin in the game,” said Monica Coury, assistant director of Arizona’s Medicaid program.
So, the next time a conservative accuses liberals of wanting a nanny state, remember Governor Jan Brewer.

Obviously, the fine is stupid, but these are both major problems in th United States.
The two primary causes of death are heart disease and lung disease. And the healthcare system is overwhelmed with people who have diseases because they are fat and out of shape.
Seriously, it is unbelievable how many conditions you can avoid if you eat right and exercise.
There is some point when something ceases to be a personal choice and actually becomes a problem for everyone else. Smoking is an obvious one, but being fat costs a lot too.
Government intervention of this variety is useless, but the state of our nation in regards to these two issues is just embarrassing.

This isn't government intervention, it's the majority singling out an unorganized minority (definition: no lobbyists), scapegoating them, and imposing their will upon them. We see this sort of thing in my state too, and in my opinion the whole idea of sin taxes should be deemed unconstitutional. If the government was serious about these problems, they would do something to impact the Tobacco and Fast Food industries, who by the way are well-organizes (definition: lots and lots of lobbyists). This whole idea is a sham, and something we've come to expect from the Wicked Witch of the West.

As a former smoker, I can tell you that smokers have been made to pay. When I started, cigarettes were $0.25 a pack, the same price as a gallon of gas.. When I quit, they were $2.50 a pack, about $0.50 more than a gallon of gas. Now they are about $8.00 a pack (even the Indians don't give you much of a break on that). At $8.00, they are about twice the price of a gallon of gas. On the other hand, Jim Beam Bourban was $5.00 a 5th when cigs were $0.25 a pack and about $9.00 a 5th now. Now, drinking seems to be problematic regarding health and safety issues, but I figure the booze lobby is just really effective and if fat people want to get by, they should consult the booze lobby about PR and paying off people. John McCain could help. I think his wife's money came from booze.
I am looking forward to the fat police going up to people at fast food restaurants and at donut shops and harassing people about their selections. Second hand fat.....

Disclaimer: Non-smoking only.
Simple strategies for a powerful government :
1. Create a monster called Monsanto which provides flavorful pesticides and food and MSG
2. Get people to grow fat
3. Get them to grow sick with any or all the problems - thyroid, cancer, diabetes et al.
4. Make them visit pharmacies often and keep drug companies happy.
5. Make healthcare costly.
6. Finally, tax them for being fat. - 1 year ago

state and federal governments, you can't take part in a massive subsidy for companies producing the pseudo food that seems to be all one can find to buy these days while berating people for their health problems clearly related to it. It's like every other issue these days where there's problem and cost-they take an issue with some very clear cut structural causes and turn it back on the people who suffer by it.

Tax the dead and dieing . I live in Arizona. Humans have no representation in the united states senate from this state. Even the last democratic senator was under the thumb of power hungry corruption. I dont know any body in elective office here who can stand up to the torrent of crap we are in. I dont trust any of our judiciary. In Maricopa county we are under a mob sheriff sent out here from to east coast to facilliate CIA drug traffic and keep tabs on other trafic and competition. Joe Arpio is retired DEA long practiced at protecting the dark machinery on the dark side of the bushs CIA. The colum of corruption is so tall ,heavey and pressing down on us it is like we are at the bottom of an ocean . That is how we are . That is how we got stuck with this useless empty head for a govenor. We really are in a desert in more ways than one. Humans here have little shelter in a hostile environment My wife is overweight , smokes, and is dieing with untreated gall stone attacks. A simple operation we dont know how to get.would help turn things around for us. She cries all the time . throws up food and even water. I recently lost a good job with insurance because. big money wanted large FORCE REDUCTION prior to the last election so as to help influance the outcome. That election went very bad for humans. Just the way it was planed. Health care and every other kind of care for humans is disappearing from Arizona as well as the rest of the nation. I think it strongly parrallels the deprivation in Iraq under the bush devils. I believe it is being done by the same people for the same reasons. I remember someone in high position years ago calling for population reduction by two thirds. So as to reduce or eliminate certain administrational challenges. Thats where I see us now. Deep in the course of that mire. I am X marine. I would perform the operation for my wife myself. Nobody else plans on doing it . The governor has no real plan. She is a twit pratteling on as she is told to do by her advisors who represent the interests and wyms of big money. Ruthless people. A stupid tax on victims of bad food and tobbaco is just more noise from the proffessional noise makers. No part of it makes any other sense. Think about the overal results of the bush wars. Downward pressure on population everywhere. Mass cruelty. For crueltys sake. No goals of peace or stability. Just violence aimed at begeting more violence. No solutions to any problems. Sounds just like my home state of Arizona. A place where war on humanity is the only operative in action.

So she trys to avoid them as much as she can. She knows the stuff. What it can do. Thank god or whatever they told us what the problem is. I expected her liver was dieing. But they do deny that this is an emergency. Because she is still alive I guess. I was told the operation costs 68k. More than everything we own. So I want techniques and proper tools to do it myself. They already to fine smokers. Over half the cost of a pack of smokes is taxes. Out of about $6, over $4 is taxes, here in Utah, half that tax goes to the state, half goes to the Feds.... for a pack a day smoker that's about $1500 in taxes every year just on their smokes!
Now... how to tax the Fatties... I believe they were talking about a fast food tax or a soda tax for that one. =)

We treat/transport a LOT of people who have smoked all their lives and now have COPD and are on 4L O2 just to survive. Cigarettes are NOT good for you but we all have choices how we live our lives. Yes I am aware that tobacco companies have put larger amounts of nicotine in cigs to addict people. Try some of the RX patch meds to help stop. I missed it with a beer afer work and with coffee at breakfast. That said, I don't think it is within the governments power to tell me how to run my business or not to smoke in public. If the people elect and pass laws that run this way we are free to move to a less oppressive, if that is how one looks at it, state/city. Freedom means choices and takes more personal responsibility than government control and edicts.

There is no other way for a corporatocracy to exist than with fines, licensing fees and heavier tax on small business, real small business. All of the corporacrats want to preach about smaller government, what they really mean is less governmental control over trust busting and union busting corporations. And in the same breath take away civil liberties. Where does the hypocrisy end? As long as Jan Brewer is governor, this will remain an unanswered question. Recall.

per occurrence for making stupid statements like this and passing and/or proposing stupid legislation!!!!!The most costly expense for us is enforcing laws
and housing prisoners that could serve community service like celebrities do!!!
All of the money wasted over the years to enforce marijuana laws now become ridiculous because of the money that will be raised by the government now promoting the sales and distribution of medical marijuana...

I want government, I need government, but talk about micromanagement this is too much. One solution is to limit the kinds of items one can purchase with a food stamp card, no liquor, no junk food, no fast food, no processed foods etc...These are typically low in nutrition, high in calories, and expensive. Children need protein, vegetable, and dairy, foods fortified with vitamins and full of additives and sugar are not healthy and add to the unhealthy conditions of obesity, diabetes, hypertension etc...In CA you can now spend food stamps on cold food items at Subway, a sandwich vs a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs nutrient for nutrient this is a waste of taxpayer money. Which I'm not against helping the poor, just make sure the money is spent wisely.

This is a sensible way to look at it, but not always practical. Many low-income/impoverished areas have no supermarket or grocery store--only fast food and convenience stores. About the only produce you may be able to find in such a place is bananas. With the cost or non-availability of public transpo, many who may want a better diet can't have one. In some places, community gardens have helped, but Arizona (the hottest parts) probably isn't the best place for that. Not to mention city or state gov't contributions to such projects is less and less likely all the time. Brewer would probably frown on the idea--just guessing. Anybody in Arizona have any facts on this?

You are right. They pissed and moaned about the First Lady trying to educate people on how to feed their children in a healthy way and they slammed her for it. I really believe they are a stupid lot who must have chips in their brains that get energy from watching Fox News.

I think the even bigger problem is as the reps move further right, they make what used to be just plain whacked, main stream. 20 years ago, they wouldn't have allowed her in the room, much less run her for governor.
