Demand Progress:
Why is PATRIOT Act reform so imperative? The Electronic Frontier Foundation just dug up documents that show that the FBI has used the PATRIOT Act to spy on innocent children: "The report describes the FBI's monitoring of young children for five days, despite the fact that none of the voices being monitored matched the voice or language of the target."
On Tuesday, April 5th, thousands of Demand Progress members and other Americans will call the White House. We'll tell President Obama to keep his campaign promises by vetoing any PATRIOT Act renewal bill that lacks powerful new checks and balances to protect the privacy of innocent Americans. Will you join us?
(links at site to join call or share sources)
* .

The PATRIOT Act is up for renewal next month. Congress members blocked a 3-year extension earlier this year, and many have proposed important amendments that would help protect Americans' civil liberties. We have a real chance to fix it, but we need President Obama to join our cause. Will you call Obama on April 5th?

join me in making your voice count!

Thanks for standing up for civil liberties.

    • We have a chance to eradicate the Patriot Act. It is a Bill of Attainder which is forbidden in the U S Constitution under Article I, Section 9. See case laws below

      Cummings v. Missouri
“A bill of attainder, is a legislative act which inflicts punishment without judicial trial and includes any legislative act which takes away the life, liberty or property of a particular named or easily ascertainable person or group of persons because the legislature thinks them guilty of conduct which deserves punishment.”

      U.S. v. Lovett
Legislative acts, no matter what their form, that apply either to named individuals or to easily ascertainable members of a group in such a way as to inflict punishment on them without a trial, are 'bills of attainder' prohibited under this clause.

I will be challenging the USA Patriot Act in the appeal of Adams v Tyson Foods 09-3054 W.D.Ark.[UNPUBLISHED DISMISSAL- to deny Amicus Briefs] to the 8th Circuit U S Court of Appeals cause # 11-1625.

I email the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other Constitutional friendy organzations for help and the FBI intercepts them. I email the media and they also do not respond. I am being isolated and harmed considerably by the Patriot Act and Bio-Terrorism Act.

Please pass this information around because the U S District Court Judges recently threatened me with incarceration for exercising my 1st Amendment rights. Yes, Illegal, UnConstitutional and my everyday life.

Write Congress and request an investigation into this abuse before they pass this dangerous law again. You may be receiving a GAG order by the FBI to remove my comments.

    • Al Queda was in part a constuction of the Bush family darksiders. Its activities were chaneled toward the insane spectaccles of murder on 911 so that the patriot act cuold be passed against humans everywhere. I will be calling. Wheres the number? I know there are still all the black boxes from which evil gains power. But if the patriot act is up where we can show our sirious oposition , then it is time to swing our little bats . Maybe more people will notice our demonstration of concern and look closer. Maybe even get active.

    • The Patriot Act is one more link that Corporatocracy is attempting to add to our chains of enslavement, along with outlawing unions, and the privatizing of every social program. One link, forged and enjoined one at a time, doesn't get much notice, but eventually the links form a line around your neck, and then our neck.

    • seems like there's a lot of things in this patriot act (such bizarre nomenclature) that even the gestapo & cheka (soviet secret police) could admire :(

    • You can count on Obama to sell us out one more time. He is one big disappointment. I think he is oblivious, as are most politicians, to our emails and letters. The only power we have is with the ballot and in the street, (in protest and general strike, if necessary). “Mr. Nice Guy” Obama doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude to fight for what is right. He backs away from conflict. After all, its Final Four time, he doesn’t want his basketball viewing interrupted. The repeal of the hated Patriot Act should be a priority, but the government has a powerful tool to weed out their political enemies. They won’t give this up too easily. It doesn’t matter what political party is involved either. The only dent we made in regulating the secrecy apparatus came in the 1970s after the CIA hearings but any reforms were rescinded by Reagan. The only time you will see Obama start to get off his duff will be next year during election season when he will probably throw us a few bones to get in again. It may be too little too late. http://sibob.org/wordpress/

    • Fixing the Patriot Act is about as effective in preventing abuses of government authority and power as putting a new coat of paint on the Death Star.

    • The Patriot Act endangers freedom for citizens in the United States more than Al Queda or any other enemy of the U.S. It has shredded the constitution. It has destroyed the protections our citizens were promised by our constitution. Contact your congressional representatives and let them know. The Patriot Act needs to be repealed...

Hmm, do you really believe that we needed the Patriot Act to do that.

In the 70's I told a big lie in a telephone conversation because I was suspicious that my calls were being monitored by someone, within hours the cops came in (not my house I lied about someone else, bad of me, I admit now) and tore that house to shreds looking for something that didn't even exist. I understood the reach of the law back then.

Truthfully, other than smoking a little pot before bed each night I was as straight as an arrow. No idea why they targeted my conversation.

I don't believe we needed the Patriot Act at all! You are correct. The United States government has been heading down the path to fascism for quite awhile. The Patriot Act was a big step in that direction. It is a stain on our constitution and if offends me. At present the United States reminds me of a huge loaded oil tanker heading at full speed for shallow waters with a treacherous rocky bottom. There may be no way of turning or stopping...

Sorry, the little "Muttley" inside of me has been chewing all the straps off the masks. Besides this one I want us to beat without being anonymous about it, thats kinda the point of beating this "Act". So we can go back to being proud of our individual beliefs, and stop wanting to be anon.

    • This article and these voices are what the world needs to hear from the American people, to understand that we are at odds with our government as much as or more then the people of most other nations. FIGHT FIGHT for the rights our forfathers fought for! Don't allow our generation to be the one that let's America finally slip away from the people.
