Gym teacher charged with sex-with-teen

A grand jury indicted 40-year-old Sonya Davis of Powers on six counts of second-degree sexual abuse Thursday.
Davis was arrested March 25 after an investigation that began March 9, when an Oregon State Police detective received information from the Department of Human Services alleging Sonya Davis was having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old boy.
According to the detective's probable cause statement that was used to obtain the arrest warrant, on March 14, OSP troopers contacted Kayne Pedrick, a gym teacher at Powers High School, who had made the report to DHS.
Pedrick had heard other boys teasing the boy in question about a tattoo he had gotten and asking if 'she" had paid for it. Although the boy didn't want to talk with Pedrick about it, Pedrick alerted the Oregon Department of Human Services.

Troopers then interviewed the boy, who said that rumors about his relationship with Davis were untrue.
But on March 25, the boy's mother contacted the detective and said she and Davis' husband -- Powers Police Chief Rhett Davis -- had found evidence of a sexual relationship between Sonya Davis and the boy.
The mother showed the detective her son's cell phone, which had sexually explicit texts from Sonya's cell phone.
Rhett Davis informed the detective that Sonya Davis had told him she'd had sex with the boy.
When the detective interviewed Sonya Davis, she said she had had sex with the boy on four occasions, twice involving more than one act.
She was arrested the same day and transported to the Coos County jail, where she was charged and released on her own recognizance.
A representative of the Coos County District Attorney's Office said no date for Davis' arraignment had yet been set, but it would be within the next couple of weeks.
