Egypt's Daily News reported today that Ali Abdullah Saleh is finished as Yemen’s president.

There is increased pressure from the United States for Saleh to step down, and quickly, as growing concern that al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, aka AQAP, is taking advantage of the unrest in the country to strategize new attacks on the West. The State Department continued to repeat the message, both publicly and privately, that Saleh cannot resort to violence to resolve the problems with the opposition.

Despite these calls, in a second day of fighting, Yemeni soldiers shot dead at least fifteen protesters and wounded hundreds of others in the city of Taez according to medical sources.

In mid-February, a small group of pro-democracy protesters started to march peacefully at Sanaa University in Yemen's capital demanding reform, and emboldened by the tidal wave that is sweeping North Africa and the Middle East, the protest has grown to encompass the entire country.
